  • This study has addressed to evaluate the effects of radius of curvature and skew angle on the negative reaction in a plate girder bridge with LRB (Lead Rubber Bearing) supports. As analytical parameters, various radius of curvatures and skew angles were selected and two seismic loads of El-Centro and artificial earthquakes were applied to the bridge in the longitudinal and transverse directions. As results of 3D analysis, the possibility of negative reaction is shown at the part of acute angle and inner side of the curved bridge, and becomes increased when seismic load is applied in the transverse direction. In addition, the occurrence of negative reaction is found to be increased as both radius of curvature and skew angle decrease, which means that curved bridge has higher possibility of negative reaction than straight one. Conclusively, all of earthquake wave, gradient, radius of curvature and skew angle should be considered together to investigate the possibility of negative reaction at the bridge support subject to seismic load.

  • A comparative study was performed for a suspension bridge to grasp the possible differences in seismic responses evaluated by several analytical methods. The items mainly investigated are the linear vs. nonlinear response, the response spectrum method vs. the linear dynamic analysis method, and the damping ratio and it's implementation into analysis procedures. According to the numerical example, it is found that the seismic responses are considerably affected by the damping-related parameters even though slight differences are shown depending on the response quantities and the exciting directions. On the other hand, it is also confirmed that the seismic responses are less affected by the analysis method-related parameters such as the response spectrum method vs. the linear dynamic analysis method, and the linear and nonlinear analysis method. The response spectrum method is expected to give conservative results for the examined bridge, provided that the design response spectrum in the Korean Highway Design Specification is modified according to the proper damping ratio.

  • The current Korean criteria for seismic performance evaluated by dynamic analysis regulates that the horizontal displacement and vertical settlement of a dam body, including the static deformation, should be within 1% of the dam height. However, there has been weak theoretical support, so that the current criteria have to be validated. Korea is in a region of low or moderate seismicity located inside the Eurasian plate, and few earthquakes with considerable magnitudes and intensities have been recorded in the area. Therefore, in this study, published data measured in overseas countries were collected in order to construct a database and validate the current criteria. In addition, dynamic centrifuge tests and a parametric study using numerical simulations were performed in order to investigate the effect on the horizontal displacement and settlement of a dam body and to validate the current criteria.

  • One of the major difficulties in the seismic analysis of a dam-reservoir system is the treatment of the energy radiation in the upstream direction of the reservoir. In the paper, a new transmitting boundary is presented that can model properly the radiation of energy in the far field direction of a semi-infinite reservoir with constant depth. In the newly developed method, effects of surface wave motion are taken into accounted and the reservoir-foundation interaction is approximately accounted for with an absorbing boundary condition. If a dam has vertical upstream face and the infinitely long reservoir maintains constant depth, then the proposed transmitting boundary can be directly coupled with the model of dam body. In present study, the dam body is assumed to behave elastically and modeled by finite element method. Seismic responses of a dam model are investigated using the newly developed transmitting boundary.

  • In and around the Korean Peninsula, 9 intraplate earthquake mechanisms since 1936 were analyzed to understand the regional stress orientation and tectonics. These earthquakes are largest ones in this century and may represent the characteristics of earthquake in this region. Focal mechanism of these earthquakes show predominant strike-slip faulting with small amount of thrust components. The average P-axis is almost horizontal ENE-WSW. This indicate that not only the subducting Pacific Plate but also the indenting Indian Plate controls earthquake mechanism in the far east of the Eurasian Plate.

  • Source parameters for forty four earthquakes which occurred in and around the Korean Peninsula were determined and the relations between them were studied. Snoke's method (Snoke, 1987) was applied in determining the corner frequencies and seismic moments. In general, the source parameters estimated at different stations for an earthquake show different values. These disagreements have been interpreted as originating, in principle, from an inadequate consideration of the source radiation pattern and direction dependent attenuation and amplification. The comer frequencies and seismic moments were averaged to exclude the such directional effects. Other source parameters were estimated from the mean corner frequency and seismic moment. The static stress drops, determined in this study, tend to be independent of seismic moment for events greater than a specific magnitude. For earthquakes with a size less than about $1.0{\times}10^{22}$ dyne-cm (nearly same as $M_L = 4.0$), the stress drop tends to decrease with the decreasing moment. This fact suggests a breakdown of the scaling law of source parameters in earthquakes below the threshold magnitude.

  • Vibration control devices are classified into passive, semi-active and active device. TMD(Tuned Mass Damper) is one of the passive control device that is mainly used to reduce vibration level of building structure and bridge structure. In this study, the application of passive tuned mass damper(TMD) to seismic response control of dome structures has been investigated. Because star dome structure has primary characteristics of dome structures, star dome structure was used as an example dome structure that is subjected to horizontal or vertical seismic loads. From this numerical analysis, it is shown that seismic response are influenced by vibration modes and it is reasonable to install TMD to the dominant points of each mode. And it is found that the passive TMD could effectively reduce the seismic responses of dome structure.

  • The importance of the vertical response of a structure was well recognized after the Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake of Japan. However, most of the seismic design codes does not specified the site sail profiles, and the sail and foundations conditions were mostly neglected in the vertical seismic analyses of a structure. In this paper, the effects of foundation size, sail layer depth under the foundation, foundation embedment and pile foundation on the vertical seismic response spectra for both surface and embedded mat foundation were studied to investigate the effects of the soft soil layer on the vertical response of a structure excited with the vertical components of Taft and El Centro earthquakes, considering the sail profile types of $S_A,S_C,S_E$ in UBC-97, the medium and large size foundations, the soil layer depth under the foundation of 30 and 60m, the foundation embedment of 0 and 15m, and the precast reinforced concrete bearing piles installed in the soft soil deposit. According to the study results, the foundation size has a little effect on the vertical seismic response, However, the soil layer depth under the foundation of 60m has to be considered for the vertical seismic analysis of a structure as for the horizontal one. The embedded pile foundations as well as the surface ones built on the soft soil layer amplified the vertical seismic response of a structure very much.

  • This paper presents a seismic fragility analysis method for a cable-stayed bridge with energy dissipation devices. Model uncertainties represented by random variables include input ground motions, characteristics of energy dissipation devices and the stiffness of cable-stayed bridge. Using linear regression, we established demand models for the fragility analysis from the relationship between maximum responses and the intensity of input ground motions. For capacity models, we considered the moment and shear force of the main tower, longitudinal displacement of the girder, deviation of the stay cables tension and the local buckling of the main steel tower as the limit states for cable-stayed bridge. As a numerical example, fragility analysis results for the 2nd Jindo bridge are presented. The effect of energy dissipation devices is also briefly discussed.
