  • Objective: To examine the effects of different shoe weights on lower leg muscle fatigue when walking by electromyographic (EMG) analysis due to the most effective weight for loading not being established. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Thirty healthy university students (15 male, 15 female) were enrolled and randomly assigned into three conditions, which included wearing athletic shoes with an addition of 300 g, 500 g, and 1,000 g weights respectively. Prior to walking, all subjects were instructed to sit in a chair for 10 minutes. All subjects walked at a speed of 3.6 m/s on a treadmill for 20 minutes without rest. EMG measurements were taken using the median power frequency to assess for the effect of the different weight of shoes on muscle fatigue of the soleus, gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior while walking on a treadmill in an upright posture. EMG measurements were taken during the first and last 30 seconds of walking. Results: In terms of muscle fatigue, for the soleus, the median power frequency was significantly lower with 1,000 g compared with 300 g and 500 g (p<0.05). For the tibialis anterior, the median power frequency was significantly lower with 1,000 g than 300 g and 500 g (p<0.05). For the gastrocnemius, the median power frequency was significantly lower with 1,000 g compared with 300 g (p<0.05). Conclusions: Increased shoe weight increases soleus, gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior muscle fatigue during ambulation.

  • Changes in the quality characteristics of muskmelon were analyzed by treating samples with 500, 1,000, and 1,500 ppb 1-MCP every 4 days and then storing the samples at $10^{\circ}C$. The weight losses of the MCP treated samples were lower than those of the control, while there were no differences in the concentrations among treatments. The firmness was maintained at a higher value in 1-MCP treated samples than the control during the storage period and showed the highest value in the 1,000 ppb treatment. The L-values (brightness of samples) in the 500 and 1,000 ppb treatments were kept constant during the storage period, while that of the control showed a decreasing trend after four days of storage. The bvalues and yellowness, were decreased after showing an increasing trend in both treatments and the control as the storage period passed. The respiration rates of 1-MCP treated samples were lower than the control, with the lowest value being observed in the 1,000 ppb treatment. The texture observed upon sensory evaluation was higher and freshness was maintained longer in the 1,000 ppb treatment. Therefore, 1,000 ppb 1-MCP was considered to be the most effective concentration for treatment of muskmelon.

  • The acute and subchronic toxicity of 1 kGy gamma-irradiated orange was evaluated in ICR mice. For acute toxicity, groups of 30 male and 30 female ICR mice were orally administered 1 kGy gamma-irradiated orange (0, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg). The mortality, clinical sign, body weight changes, and necropsy findings of ICR mice were observed for 14 days. No significant changes in body weight or abnormal gross findings were observed in relation to 1 kGy gamma-irradiated orange. Hematological and serum biochemical parameters were within normal ranges. According to the results, 1 kGy gamma-irradiated orange had no special toxic effects in male and female ICR mice at 2,000 mg/kg. For subchronic toxicity, groups of 36 male and 36 female ICR mice were given a diet of 1 kGy gamma-irradiated orange for 13 weeks (control, non-irradiated, and irradiated imported orange). During the experimental period, mortality, clinical signs, body weight change, food consumption, organ weight, and histopathological examination did not show any changes in comparison to the control group. Several hematological and serum biochemical parameters showed statistically significant changes, but these changes were within normal range. These results indicate that 1 kGy gamma-irradiated orange did not cause any toxic effects in male and female ICR mice and therefore can be considered as safe.

  • Purpose: The characteristics of hospitalized patients in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), including hospitalization costs (HC) and National Health Insurance (NHI) status were studied. Methods: We gathered the following data from 7 hospitals in Korea during 2006: the distribution of patients according to birth weight (BW), and the duration of the hospital stay according to BW and He. Results: The patients who were admitted to the NICU consisted of high-risk neonates, including low birth weight or premature neonates, which comprised 50% of all neonates admitted to the NICU. The duration of hospitalization was 75-90 days for neonates with BW <1,000 g, 45-60 days for neonates with BW between 1,000 and 1,499 g, and approximately 15 days for neonates with BW between 2,000 and 2,499 g. The portion of the HC covered by the NHI was 77.1%, 22.9% of the total HC was not covered by the NHI (19.5% was included in the list, but not covered by the NHI and 3.4% was not listed, but covered by the NHI). The average total HC per person was 4,360,000 won, and the HC covered and not covered by the NHI were 3,677,000 won and 1,007,000 won, respectively. The mean HC were as follows; 35,000,000 won for a BW <500 g, 18,000,000 won for a BW between 500 and 999 g, 16,000,000 won for a BW between 1,000 and 1,499 g, and 4,200,000 won for a BW between 1,500 and 1,999 g. Conclusion: Not only premature, but also ill neonates were under the care of the NICU. The HC increased as the BW decreased and the hospitalization period increased. The proportion of the patient's financial burden is >25% of the total He. For this matter, additional NHI is needed.

  • Acute and subacute oral toxicity of $HELIKIT^{TM}$ ($^{13}C-urea$) were carried out in Sprague-Dawley rats of both sex. The toxicity of $HELIKIT^{TM}$ was compared with urea($^{12}C-urea$ which is used for control). In acute toxicity studies, we daily examined number of deaths, clinical signs, body weights and pathological examination for 14 days after single oral administration of HELIKIT or urea($^{12}C-urea$) at a dose of 5000 mg/kg. The subacute oral toxicity was investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with $HELIKIT^{TM}$ at a dose of 40, 200 and 1,000 mg/kg/day or $^{12}C-urea$ at a dose of 1,000 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks. In acute toxicity studies, $HELIKIT^{TM}$ and urea did not show any toxic effect in rats and oral LD50 value was over 5,000 mg/kg rats. In subacute toxicity studies, no death occured and no drug-related changes were found in clinical observations; body weight, food consumption, opthalmoscopy. auditory test, urinalysis, hematology, blood chemistry, gross pathological examination or organ weight between $HELIKIT^{TM}$, urea and control groups. In histopathological examinations, the slight thickening of mucosa of the limiting ridge in the stomach was noted in the animals treated with $HELIKIT^{TM}$ at a dose of 1,000 mg/kg/day and also the changes in urea group at a dose of 1,000 mg/kg/day was found, but all of these changes in the changes in ures group at a dose of 1,000 mg/kg/days was found, but all of these changes in the stomach regressed after withdrawal of the test article for 2 weeks and reversibility of the effect was revealed. These results indicate that the non toxic dose level of $HELIKIT^{TM}$ was 1,000 mg/kg/day in the 4 weeks-repeated dose study, suggesting that the substitution of $^{13}C$ for carbon in urea molecule has no effect on the toxicity of urea and changes in stomach are reversible.

  • LBO0014, a new recombinant human erythropoietin, was at dose levels of 0, 120, 600, and 3,000 IU/kg/day administered intravenously to pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats during the organogenetic period. All dams were subjected to caesarean section on day 20 of pregnancy, Effects of test substance on dams and embryonic development of Fl fetuses were examined. No treatment-related changes in clinical signs, body weight, and food consumption were observed at all doses tested. At necropsy spleen enlargement was found at 3,000 lU/kg. There was an ulcrease in the spleen weight at 600 and 3,0007/kg. Developmental toxicity was evident as increased resorptions at 3,000 lU/kg. At 600 and 3,000 RJ/kg, retarded ossification of fetuses occurred at an incidence of 31.3% and 64.7%, respectively. In addition, there was a delay in ossification of sternebrae and sacrocaudal vertebrae at 600 and 3,000 lU/kg. A decrease in the number of metacarpi and metatarsi was also seen at 3,000 nJ/kg. The results show that the no observed adverse effect dose level (NOAEL) for material toxicity was over 3,000 IU/kg/day and the NOAEL for developmental toxicity was 120 IU/kg/day.

  • Each molecular weight (Mw) fraction of melanoidins prepared from a D-glucose and glycine system, i. e., Mw below 1,000, Mw between 1,000 to 5,000 and Mw above 5,000 and nondialyzable and ozone-treated melanoidins were reacted with heat-induced mutagens such as Trp-P-1, Trp-P-2, Glu-P-1, Glu-P-2 and IQ at $37^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The inhibitory effects of the melanoidins on the mutagens increased with increasing molecular weight. The reducing ability ana antioxidative activity of melanoidins also increased in proportion to the increase in molecular weight, whereas the mutagenic inhibitory effect decreased on reduction of the melanoidins with sodium borohydride. It was also observed that a part of Trp-P-1 was adsorbed to melanoidin molecules. On modification of amino groups of these mutagens with carbonyl compounds derived through the Maillard reaction such as diacetyl and glyceraldehyde, their mutagenic activities were remarkably suppressed. Accordingly, it is speculated that the mutagenic inhibitory action of melanoidins is due to their reducing ability and antioxidative activity, and electrostatic binding and carbonyl groups of the melanoidin molecules.

  • In order to increase the dissolution rate of furosemide(4-choro-N-furfury1-5-sulfamoy1 anthranilic acid_, various ratio coprecipitates with water-soluble polymers, such as polyvinylpyrrolidone and polythylene glycol, of different molecular weight, were prepared and quantitatively studied by comparing their dissolution characteristics of furosemide at powder state and at nondisintegrating disk state containing constant surface area at various temperatures and rotating velocities. The dissolution characteristics of furosemide from pure furosemide disks and 1:2(w/w) furosemide-PVP coprecipitate disks were in accordance with Noyes-Nernst equation and the rate constant of dissolution was proportional to the square root of rotating velocity of the disks. The intrinsic rate of dissoluton at 150 rpm, 37.deg.C was $2.21{\times}10^{-7}$ for the PVP 10, 000 COPRECIPITATE, $1.64{\times}10^{-7}$ for the PVP 40, 000 coprecipitate, and$ 1.44 {\times} 10^{-7}$for the PVP 360, 000 corprecipitate, while the rate was $1.27{\times}10^{-8}M/cm^{2} min$ for pure furosemide, repectively. The activation energy of dissolution was about 17, 000 for furosemide and about 7, 300 cal/mole for the 1:2 furosemide PVP 40, 000 coprecipitate, respectively.
