Overall, the rice protein extract using BR has excellent antioxidant and water holding capacity which can be used as a potential skin moisturizer and antioxidant functional cosmetic material.
The aim of the study was to assess the cosmeceutical activity of Pyrus ussuriensis leaves and it is possible that can be used as a cosmetic ingredient for application of cosmetic industries. P. ussurensis leaf was extracted with various solvents including water, 70% ethanol and 60% acetone. In the result of DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) scavenging radical activity, water, ethanol and acetone extract of P. ussuriensis leaf were higher than 70%, 80% and 85% at 50 ppm concentration, respectively. Xanthine oxidase inhibition activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity by P. ussuriensis extract were higher than 30%. In addition, SODlike activity of all extracts showed tendency of the significant increase with the increase of concentration. In the anti-inflammatory test, P. ussuriensis leaf extract inhibited generation of nitric oxide (NO) stimulated by LPS in the macrophage cell line (raw 264.7) after 12 to 24 hours. As above results, P. ussuriensis has a great potential as a cosmeceutical raw material as well as anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory ability.
Objectives : Oxidative stress seems to play a major role in mechanisms by which ethanol causes liver injury. Previous studies have shown that treatment with Chungganhaeju-tang (Qingganjiejiu-tang, CGHJT) has protective effects on alcoholic liver disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Chungganhaeju-tang on oxidative stress. Materials and Methods : In vitro, we evaluated the inhibitory activities of CGHJT on DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl), xanthine oxidase, trypsin, and hyaluronidase, and measured cell viability, and proliferation. In the cell culture model, we measured the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) after CGHJT treatment in C34 and E47 cell lines, HepG2 cells transfected with/without the cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) gene. In vivo, we measured malondialdehyde levels in the liver tissue and alcohol concentration in the blood. Results : CGHJT showed significant free radical scavenging activity against DPPH and xanthine oxidase in the in vitro study, and increased cell viability, proliferation, and activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase in C34 and in E47 cell lines. CGHJT reduced malondialdehyde levels and blood alcohol concentration in vivo, as well. Conclusions : This study suggests that CGHJT has antioxidant effects on oxidative stress by reducing lipid peroxidation and inhibiting the ethanol induced suppression of antioxidant enzyme activities.
The aim of the study was to evaluate in vitro antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the methanolic extracts of leaves of Solanum sisymbrifolium, Solanum anguivi multiflora, Solanum barbisetum and Solanum jasminoides. Fifteen herbs used in oral medicine were extracted in ethanol and screened for tooth whitening effect, radical scavenging activity, inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase activity and anti-bacterial activity on Streptoccocus mutans. The results are as followed: 1. The tooth whitening effect of toothpaste containing 1 $\%$ ethanol extracts of 15 herbs was tested in brushing method using artificially stained HAT tablet and bovine tooth specimens. Toothpaste containing 1$\%$ of Vucia unijuga, Illicium verum, Angelica dahurica and Piper longum extracts showed tooth whitening effects on both HAT tablet and bovine tooth specimens. But the others did not show a considerable activity. 2. The antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of 15 herbs was tested using the method of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) reactivity. Two ethanol extracts of Cimicifuga heracleifolia and Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis were found to be the most effective on radical scavenging activity. C. heracleifolia and P. nigra var. henonis extracts removed 86$\%$ and 81 $\%$ of DPPH radical at 0.01$\%$, compared with butylated hydroxy toluene as positive control. 3. The inhibition activity of ethanol extracts on nitrate production In RAW264.7 cell stimulated by lipopolysacchride was tested using the Griess reagent. But all extracts did not inhibit nitrate production. 4. The antibacterial activity on Streptoccocus mutans was tested by paper disk method. But no one extract showed any anti - bacterial activity.

Compounds 7 and 9 exhibited significant radical scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl radical.
The Forsythiae Fructus is an oriental medicine containing various lignans. In this study, the Forsythiae Fructus were extracted by hot water (Sample 1), hot water after bio-conversion using Lactobacillus strain (Sample 2-LP2, 2-LA, 2-LC, 2-LL, 2-BL and 2-LM) and 70% ethanol (Sample 3). Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were improved by bio-conversion process using Lactobacillus strain, compared to water extract. Especially, sample 2-LL and 2-LA which had shown the high total polyphenol and flavonoid content in antioxidant activity. Also, sample 2-LL and 2-LA showed higher melanin generation inhibitory activity as of 55%, 53% in maximum extract concentration of $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. In the anti-inflammation test of the Forsythiae Fructus extracts, nitric oxide (NO) synthesis was inhibited. Specially, both 70% Forsythiae Fructus ethanol extract and sample 2-BL which have shown the relatively higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and superoxide dismutase (SOD) like activities. In conclusion, the Forsythiae Fructus extracts with bio-conversion process has effect of skin whitening and anti-inflammation activity than other extracts. It could be used as a valuable materials for functional cosmetics.
This study evaluated the quality characteristics and antioxidant activities of cookies after adding black ginseng powder at ratios of 0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%, and the potential of black ginseng as a functional food. The moisture content increased with an increase in the black ginseng powder content while the pH decreased. The L value decreased with increase in the black ginseng powder content while the a and b values increased. The hardness decreased with increase in the black ginseng powder content. Notably, antioxidant activities, such as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), 2-2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging showed the highest increases in cookies containing 7% black ginseng powder. The total phenol and flavonoid contents significantly increased according to the amount of black ginseng powder added. These results suggest that black ginseng powder can be applied to cookies to achieve high quality and antioxidant activity.
Russula rosacea, a mycorrhizal fungus, has been used for edible and medicinal purposes. This study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-cholinesterase, and nitric oxide inhibitory effects of the fruiting bodies from R. rosacea extracted with methanol, and hot water. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities of the methanol and hot water extracts (2.0 mg/ml) of R. rosacea were comparable with BHT, the positive control. The chelating effects of the mushroom and hot water extracts were significantly higher than that of BHT. The reducing power of methanol and hot water extract (6 mg/ml) were significantly lower than that of BHT. Seven phenolic compounds were detected from acetonitrile and hydrochloric acid solvent extract of the mushroom. alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activities of methanol and hot water extracts were lower than that of acarbose, the positive control. The acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory effects were moderate compared with galanthamine, the standard drug. Nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced RAW 264.7 cells were inhibited significantly by the mushroom extracts in a concentration dependent manner. Therefore, we demonstrated that fruiting bodies of R. rosacea possess in vitro antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-cholinesterase, and NO production inhibitory activities. The experimental results suggest that the fruiting bodies of R. rosacea are good natural antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-cholinesterase, and anti-inflammatory sources.
The antioxidant activities of methanol and dichloromethane/acetone extracts of twenty three seaweeds were tested by using 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl(DPPH) at a $100{\mu}g/ml$ concentrations. The dichloromethane/acetone extracts of three seaweeds(Symphyocladia latiuscula, Gloiopoltis furcata, Sagassum thunbergii), were found to be most effective in DPPH radical scavenging activity. The DPPH radical scavenging effect of these seaweeds was Symphyocladia latiuscula(85.82%), Gloiopoltis furcata(82.83%), Sagassum thunbergii(74.05%) in order. These seaweeds were evaluated using the pyrogallol UV-VIS spectrophotometeric method to generate superoxide anion. Among them, the methanol extracts of six seaweeds were showed weak superoxide dismutase-like activities. The dichloromethane/acetone extracts obtained from Symphyocladia latiuscula was fractionated with $CH_2Cl_2$, n-hexane, 15% aq.MeOH, n-BuOH, $H_2O$. The 15% aq.MeOH soluble fraction exhibiting the strongest antioxidative activities was further purified by C18 column flash chromatography and reversed HPLC. The two active principles of Symphyocladia latiuscula were isolated and characterized as 2,3,6-tribromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzyl alcohol(1), 2,3,6-tribromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzyl methyl ether(2).
