  • Flexibility and fracture properties determine the performance of NiTi rotary instruments. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how geometrical differences between three NiTi instruments affect the deformation and stress distributions under bending and torsional conditions using finite element analysis. Three NiTi files (ProFile .06 / #30, F3 of ProTaper and ProTaper Universal) were scanned using a Micro-CT. The obtained structural geometries were meshed with linear, eight-noded hexahedral elements. The mechanical behavior (deformation and von Mises equivalent stress) of the three endodontic instruments were analyzed under four bending and rotational conditions using ABAQUS finite element analysis software. The nonlinear mechanical behavior of the NiTi was taken into account. The U-shaped cross sectional geometry of ProFile showed the highest flexibility of the three file models. The ProTaper, which has a convex triangular cross-section, was the most stiff file model. For the same deflection, the ProTaper required more force to reach the same deflection as the other models, and needed more torque than other models for the same amount of rotation. The highest von Mises stress value was found at the groove area in the cross-section of the ProTaper Universal. Under torsion, all files showed highest stresses at their groove area. The ProFile showed highest von Mises stress value under the same torsional moment while the ProTaper Universal showed the highest value under same rotational angle.

  • Many investigators have reported difficulties in changing the high school students' misconceptions on mechanics. By one possible solution to this problem, some researchers suggested that the students should be taught mechanics at a younger age to make conceptual changes possible. because as they get older they become less willing to change their ideas. The purpose of this study was to compare the patterns of students' conceptual changes on force by age, to find out whether older students were less ready to change their conceptions than younger students. Individual interviews were carried out with 35 students (average ages 13) in middle school class and 50 students (average ages 17) in high school class near by the middle school. Those students who held the misconcetpion that "motion-implies-force (Impetus conception)" were asked to read a student-centered refutational text (anomalous data). In the immediate and delayed posttest, the types of responses of the students were analyzed to find out the patterns of student's conceptual changes on force by age. In result, first, most of students had impetus conception. Some of the students aged 13 understood the force as terminologies related with everyday experiences, while the students aged 17 understood the force as scientific terminologies. Second, there was no evidence to suggest that conceptual change is more difficult for the students aged 17 than aged 13. Third, the students aged 13 showed diverse responses (plain acceptance, critical acceptance, plain rejection, critical rejection) to the refutational text, while the students aged 17 showed restricted responses (critical acceptance, critical rejection). A month later those students who showed the plain acceptance retrogressed unscientific conceptions, while those students who showed critical acceptance maintained scientific conceptions. We did not find out any evidence to suggest that conceptual change is more difficult for older students. These results need deeper investigation on the nature of the loss of plasticity in comparison with other important variables.

  • The high-tension bolted joints are clamped by the axial force which approaches the yielding strength. The introduced axial force is transmitted to the connection members pass through washer. The transferred load in connections is balanced to the compressive stress of plates, axial force in bolts and the external loads. In this mechanism, the compressive stress and slip load we dominated by the effective stiffness of bolted joints and plates. In general the effective stiffness is specified to product to the effective area and elasticity modulus in connections. In this reason, the conic projection formular which is assumed that the axial force in bolts is distributed to the cone shape and that region is related to the elastic deformation mechanism in connections, was proposed. But it conclude what kind of formula is justified. Therefore in this paper, the fatigue tests are performed to the high tension bolted joints and inspected to the phase on the friction face. And using the FEM and numerical method, it is analyzed and approximated to the compressive stress distribution and its region. Moreover, it is estimated to the effective area and to the relation the friction area to the effective compressive distribution region.

  • In this paper, a simulation method of the internal winding fault is proposed to calculate winding current and electromagnetic force in a distribution power transformer by suing FEM program. The model of the transformer is a single phase, 60[Hz], 1[MVA], 22.9[kV]/220[V], cable-type winding. The short-circuit current and electromagnetic force are calculated by FEM(Finite Element Method) program(Flux2D) and the results we verified with theoretical formula and PSPICE program. The simulation results are fairly good agreement with the other verified methods within 5[%] error rate. The turn-to-turn short-circuit current is 500 times of the rated current and the electromagnetic force is about $20{\sim}200times$. The method presented in this study may serve as one of the useful tools in the electromagnetic force analysis of the transformer winding behavior under the short circuit condition for design of the structure.

  • A two-dimensional Stokes flow past a circular cylinder in a channel is analyzed. The circular cylinder is located at the center of the channel, and a plane Poiseuille flow exists upstream and downstream far from the circular cylinder. The Stokes approximation is used, and the flow is investigated analytically by using the eigenfunction expansion and the least square methods. From the analysis, the stream function and pressure distribution are obtained, and the pressure and shear stress distributions on the circular cylinder and channel wall are calculated. The additional pressure drop induced by the circular cylinder and the force exerted on it are calculated as functions of the length of the radius of the circular cylinder. For a typical length of the radius of the circular cylinder, the streamline pattern and pressure distribution are shown.

  • The purpose of the study was to perform trend analysis of the exercise content i.e. element difficulty distribution scores, element group distribution scores obtained by the athletes during 2014 Korea Cup International Gymnastic finals. The conclusion drawn from the analysis are as follows: Firstly in terms of tournament technical difficulty value, Korean athletes showed characteristics of reliance on swing element rather than strength hold element which could actually secure higher difficulty scores. Secondly, skill acquisition of higher difficulty value is demanded by taking advantage of familiar characteristics from the swing element i.e. Jonasson and Roll bwd. Slowly with str. arms and body to swallow (2s.). Thirdly, development of sensory training and strengthening exercise program are essential to enhance strength hold technique.

  • The electrokinetic effect can be found in cases of the fluid flowing across the charged membrane micropores. The externally applied body force originated from the electrostatic interaction between the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann field and the flow-induced electrical field is taken into the equation of motion. The electrostatic potential profile is computed a priori by applying the finite difference scheme, and an analytical solution to the Navier-Stokes equation of motion for slit-like pore is obtained via the Green's function. An explicit analytical expression for the flow-induced streaming potential is derived as functions of relevant physicochemical parameters. The influences of the electric double layer, the surface potential of the wall, and the charge condition of the pore wall upon the velocity profile as well as the streaming potential are examined. With increasing of either the electric double layer thickness or the surface potential, the average fluid velocity is entirely reduced, while the streaming potential increases.

  • Rainfall is one of the most active forces that cause soil erosion. The action of rain on the soil exerts an erosive power caused by the impact of the drops, which fall with variable speed and kinetic energy, depending directly on the diameter of the drop. The objective of this study is to determine algorithms capable of estimating rainfall erosivity for the region of Maceió-AL. For this purpose, erosion rains were collected between 2003 and 2006 using a RD-69 disdrometer, which continuously and automatically measures rainfall distribution in a range of 1 min. The determination of algorithms in the form of power equation to estimate was adjusted with one and two independent variables (amount of rainfall, duration and maximum intensity).
