  • This is the second of two companion papers that describe non-prismatic beam element for nonlinear seismic analysis of steel moment frames. Described in a companion paper is the formulation of a non-prismatic beam element to model the elastic and inelastic behavior of steel beams, which have reduced beam sections(RBS). This study describes the determination of yield surfaces, stiffness parameters, and hardening (or softening) rule parameters for RBS beam element. Analytical results of the RBS beam element show good correlation with test data and Finite Element Method(FEM) results.

  • Because strong urban earthquakes must produce huge losses of both life and property, examinations about the effect of huge earthquakes for tall buildings are very required. The goal of this report is examining model safety and compare the behavior of 2-D tall models under huge seismic loads. This report examines high-rise models designed KBC2009 codes using 1) seismic loads regulated by KBC2009 and 2) amplified seismic loads assumed to strong earthquakes. And observing for more realistic behavior of tall buildings under huge earthquakes, this report takes two analysis methods - response spectrum analysis and non-linear time history analysis considering P-delta effect.

  • This study is intended to predict the seismic behavior of the down-scaled 3-story steel frame structures subjected to the real ground motion, and evaluate their structural damage through advanced finite element (FE) analysis results. The FE frame models are designed by considering the effect of the soft story. In addition, the effect of structural asymmetry is also taken into consideration during the nonlinear dynamic analyses. After observing the analysis results, it is reconfirmed that the damage of the steel frame building under the ground motion should be governed by the soft story column rather than the structural mass asymmetry.

  • In the present study, the deformation capacity of slender shear walls with thin web was studied. As reported by other researchers, web-crushing and rebar-fracture, developing by inelastic deformation after flexural yielding, were considered as the governing failure modes of walls. To address the effect of the longitudinal elongation on web-crushing and rebar-fracture, the longitudinal elongation was predicted by using truss model analysis. The failure criteria by web-crushing and rebar-fracture were defined as a function of the longitudinal elongation. The proposed method was applied to 17 shear wall specimens with boundary columns, and the prediction results were compared with the test results. The results showed that proposed method predicted the maximum deformations and failure modes of the wall specimens with reasonable precision.

  • Longitudinal elongation develops in reinforced concrete beams that exhibit flexural yielding during cyclic loading. The longitudinal elongation can decrease the shear strength and deformation capacity of the beams. In the present study, nonlinear truss model analysis was performed to study the elongation mechanism of reinforced concrete beams. The results showed that residual tensile plastic strain of the longitudinal reinforcing bar in the plastic hinge is the primary factor causing the member elongation, and that the shear-force transfer mechanism of diagonal concrete struts has a substantial effect on the magnitude of the elongation. Based on the analysis results, a simplified method for evaluating member elongation was developed. The proposed method was applied to test specimens with various design parameters and loading conditions..

  • Aeroelastic characteristics of a deployable missile control fin have been investigated. A deployable missile control fin is modeled by a 2-dimensional typical section. Supersonic Doublet-Point method is used for the computation of supersonic unsteady aerodynamic forces and Karpel's Minimum-State approximation is used for the aerodynamic approximation. Root-locus method and time-integration method are used for the linear and nonlinear flutter analyses. For the nonlinear flutter analysis the deployable hinge is represented by a asymmetric bilinear spring and is linearized by using the describing function method. From the flutter analyses, the effects of nonlinear parameters on the aeroelastic characteristics are investigated.

  • The buckling length of exterior beam-columns of the first floor in moment resisting steel frames with weak beams is uncertain when plastic hinges occur at the ends of weak beams due to seismic loads. The objective of this study is to investigate the buckling strength of concrete-filled tubular beam-columns and to suggest the reduced buckling length of them to apply to the beam-column design code. The exterior beam-columns are modelized with horizontal displacement restraint springs. Their strength and reduced buckling length are evaluated by numerical analysis.

  • In this paper, an analytical model is proposed for analyzing the hysteretic behavior of RC beam with relocated plastic hinge region under load reversals. The plastic hinge is modeled not to be concentrated on a point but to be distributed on a finite size in beam. This is based on the assumption that the plastic hinge is formed over a certain region, in which the curvature varies. Tangential matrix is reformed using stiffness coefficients including variales such as the length and location of plastic hinge region. In order to construct the hysteretic rule of hinge, modified Takeda rule is also proposed on the base of regression analysis for the previous test results. Previous specimens are analyzed using the proposed model and the result is compared with test result. On the result of the comparison, it was shown that the hysteretic behavior of beams with different location of plastic hinge region could be prediced using the proposed analytical process.

  • The potential shear strength of reinforced concrete beams decreases after flexural yielding due to the decrease of the effective compressive strength of concrete in plastic hinge zone. A truss model considering shear deterioration in the plastic hinge zone was proposed in order to evaluate the ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams failing in shear after flexural yielding This model can determine the potential shear strength of the beam by using a truss model. The potential shear strength gradually decreases as the increase of the axial strain of member. When the calculated potential shear strength decreases up to the flexural yielding strength, the corresponding rotation angle is defined as the ductile capacity of the beam. The predicted ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams is shown to be in a good agreement with experimental results.

  • Significance of SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite regadless of weather have grown for Earth observation. According to the cost-effective trend in satellite development, SAR antenna is actively studied. It's a competitive candidate to use deployable SAR antenna out of CFRP. In this study, variables for an antenna configuration model was researched and evaluated. The design of the antenna was structurally analyzed by FEM(Finite Element Model). Tool-kit was developed for modifying the SAR antenna model easily in accordance with system requirement change. In the tool-kit, antenna configuration design and error analysis of the antenna surface could be achieved. And compatibility of tool-kit results to CST, a RF analysis program, was confirmed.
