Petrochemical Characteristics of the Duibaejae Volcanic Rocks from Goseong, Gangwon-do, Korea (강원도 고성 뒤배재 화산암의 암석화학적 특성)

  • Duibaejae basalts from Goseong, Gangwon-do, are divided into the lower basalt and the upper basalt depending on the properties, such as occurrence, mineral compositions, and major and trace compositions of the basalts. The lower basalts have characteristics of agglomerate rocks as well as contain, crustal and mantle xenoliths, and olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase xenocrysts. The upper basalts with columnar joints contain relatively more mantle xenolith and olivine xenocryst than the lower basalts. The major and trace element compositions suggest that the composition of the upper basalts is close to primary magma composition. Enrichment and depletion patterns of the trace and the rare-earth elements of the lower basalts are similar to those of the upper basalts, whereas the lower basalts are more LREE enriched than the upper basalts. The source magmas of the lower and upper basalts from Duibaejae volcanic edifice were generated from about 0.8-1.2% and 3.7-4.0% batch melting of garnet peridotite, respectively. The abundance of granite xenolith, and plagioclase and quartz xenocrysts with reaction rim indicates that the lower basalts, compared with upper basalts, might have been assimilated with the crustal materials during ascending to surface.

  • Petrological and chemical studies of Precambrian dikes in the southern Lake Superior region were conducted with the objects of evaluating magma source and constraining models for the paleo-tectonic environment. Forty-six samples were analyzed for major, trace, and rare earth elements. Chemical data of the studied dikes are typical of continental tholeiites and showing iron-enrichment fractionation trend. With wallrock contamination carefully evaluated, a series of tectonic discriminating methods utilizing immobile trace elements indicate that the source magma was a high-Ti tholeiitic basalt similar to present-day T-type MORB. Effect of chemical contamination from wallrock assimilation accmulates with increasing differentiation. Evolved rocks show LREE enriched patterns and have enhanced levels of LIL elements (e.g., Rb, K, Ba, Th), but low levels of high field strength elements (e.g., Nb, P, Ti) with respect to their neighboring elements. It is suggested from this study that this enrichment possibly due to a combination of a feature inherited from the subcontinental lithosphere and crustal contamination. Geochemical signatures of these rocks are distinctively different from those of arc-related volcanics. Comparisons with chemistries of modern magmas show a pattern of overlap between Within-plate and ocean-floor characteristics, and chemical signatures of these rocks favor a model of intrusion into a crustal environment undergoing lithospheric attenuation.

Petrologic and Mineralogic Studies on the Origin of Paleolithic Obsidian Implements from Wolseongdong, Korea (월성동 구석기 유적 출토 흑요석제 석기의 암석 및 광물학적 연구를 통한 원산지 추정)

  • Petrological, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses were carried on the paleolithic obsidian implements excavated at Wolseongdong, Daegu, Korea. The obsidians has a homogeneous glassy texture that can be observed in a typical obsidian formed from a rapid cooling of silicic magma. Major element composition of the obsidians represent calc-alkaline series. Comparing those with other obsidians from domestic local excavation sites, Mt. Baekdu, and Kyusu of Japan, the Wolseongdong obsidians show similar element distribution pattern with others in spite of small difference in trace and rare Earth element contents. Sr isotopes of the obsidians considerably differ from those of the obsidians from southern part of the Korean Peninsula or from Mt. Baekdu. K-Ar age is approximately 30 Ma, which is much older than Mt. Baekdu (10 Ma). Therefore, considering the characteristics of obsidians found in the Korean Peninsula including mineralogy, petrology, trace element, and isotopes chronology, the obsidians can be divided into four groups: Mt. Baekdu, southern part of Korea (Kyusu of Japan), middle part of Korea, and Wolseongdong region. These groups suggest a possibility of more than four different origins of the obsidians found in the Korean Peninsular.

Evaluation of LA-ICP-MS Whole Rock Trace Element Analysis Using Fused Glass Bead of Silicate Rocks (규산염 암석의 알칼리 용융 유리원판에 대한 LA-ICP-MS 전암 미량원소 분석법 평가)

  • Using laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), we evaluated the reliability of trace element abundance data measured from the silicate rock references of JR-3, JG-3, JGb-1 and JB-1b using glass discs made by alkali fusion. For 28 elements including rare earth elements, relative standard deviations (RSD) are better than 7% in case when the concentrations of the elements in the rock samples are greater than 10 ppm. However, RSD shows somewhat increased values for the concentrations less than 10 ppm, but never exceeds 25%. Compared with previously reported averages of the compiled abundance data, our data display satisfactory results for the most cases with differences less than 10%. We suggest that LA-ICP-MS analysis using fused glass beads is a reliable, precise and time-saving method of trace element analysis for the silicate rocks spanning from mafic to felsic compositions.

Recovery of Rare Earth Elements from Nd Magnet Scrap Using PVC (PVC에 의한 네오디뮴 자석 스크랩으로부터 희토류 회수)

  • A large amount of Nd-Fe-B magnet scraps are generated during magnet manufacture process. In this study, selective chlorination of the rare earth elements by hydrogen chloride gas which obtained from the pyrolysis of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was investigated. In thermogravimetric analysis, drastic weight loss was occurred at about 500 K and 710 K. At the isothermal experiments, the weight loss reaches about 30% above 673 K. XRD patterns characterized that after each experiments, ${\alpha}$-Fe, Nd oxychloride, Nd chloride, and Fe chlorides were formed, and the leaching residues remain only ${\alpha}$-Fe. The yields of Nd, Dy, and Fe for the isothermal experiment were increased with temperature and peaked at 873 K. As PVC ratio increased, the yields of Nd, Dy and Fe were also increased.

Magnetic Properties and Structures of Rare earth-Aluminum Compounds $RAI_{2}$ (희토류원소-알루미늄 화합물 $RAI_{2}$의 자기적성질 및 구조)

  • Rare earth-aluminum intermetallic compounds $RAI_{2}$ (R ; Lu, Ce, Gd) are prepared by the arc-melt method and the magnetic properties and electronic structures are investigated by magnetic susceptiptibiliy measurements using SQUID magnetometer. The magnetic suceptibiliyof $LuAl_{2}$ is weakly temperature dependent and shows a Pauli susceptibility of $10.1{\times}10^{-5}$ emu/mol, which means 3.2 states/eV/formula unit. On the other hand, the susceptibility data of $CeAl_{2}$ and $GdAl_{2}$ show a Curie-Weiss behavior for paramagnets. The magnetization data at low temperatures confirm that $CeAl_{2}$ undergoes an antiferromagnetic phase transition near 4 K whereas $GdAl_{2}$ a ferromagnetic transition at 170 K. The distinctive magnetic behaviors of $RAI_{2}$ originate from the different 4f band filling.

  • In this study, treatment conditions for monazite concentrate in Hong-Cheon area deposit were studied with NaOH fritting decomposition and HCl leaching experiments. At condition of NaOH fritting decomposition, it was appropriate to adopt particle size of -200 mesh monazite, reaction temperature of about $460^{\circ}C$ and NaOH/TREO mole ratio of 6. In case of HCl leaching for decomposed product, it was appropriate to use hydrochloric acid of above 8N with leaching temperature of above $80^{\circ}C$, leaching time of 2 hrs and pulp density of about 10%. A rate of decomposition and leaching for monazite was above 90% under optimum conditions. Sodium phosphate compound was effectively recovered from NaOH decomposed solution, and mixed rare earth chloride solution was prepared with HCl leaching of decomposed product.

The Origin of Radioactive Elements Found in Groundwater Within the Chiaksan Gneiss Complex: Focusing on the Relationship with Minerals of the Surrounding Geology (치악산 편마암 복합체에 분포하는 지하수 내 함유된 방사성 원소의 기원: 주변 지질을 구성하는 광물과의 연관성을 중심으로)

  • Petrological and mineralogical analyses were conducted to identify minerals containing radioactive elements (uranium) in the Chiaksan gneiss complex and to confirm their association with the surrounding groundwater. Fourteen minerals were identified through the microscopic and electron microscopy (SEMEDS) investigation. The principal minerals included plagioclase, biotite, quartz, alkali feldspar, chlorite, and calcite. Minor minerals were sphene, allanite, apatite, zircon, thorite, titanite, pyrite, and galena. A small amount of thorite was observed in the size of ~1 mm within macrocrystalline allanite. Allanite, which includes a large amount of rare earth elements, appeared in three distinctive patterns. The results of the EPMA analyses indicated that macrocrystalline allanite had higher elemental contents of TiO2~1.70 wt.%, Ce2O3~11.86 wt.%, FeO ~13.31 wt.%, MgO ~0.90 wt.% and ThO2 ~1.06 wt.% with the lowest average content of Al2O3 17.35 ± 2.15 wt.% (n = 7), CaO 12.13 ± 1.81 wt.% (n = 7). An allanite existing at the edge of the sphenes encompassing titanites had a higher element content of Al2O3 ~24.00 wt.%, Nd2O3 ~5.10 wt.%, Sm2O3~0.66 wt.%, Dy2O3~0.86 wt.% and Y2O3~1.38 wt.% with the lowest average content of TiO2 0.35 ± 0.21 wt.% (n = 11), Ce2O3 5.25 ± 1.03 wt.% (n = 11), FeO 9.84 ± 0.26 wt.% (n = 11), MgO 0.12 ± 0.05 wt.% (n = 11), and La2O3 1.49 ± 0.29 wt.% (n = 11). Allanites in a matrix of parental rocks exhibited intermediate values between the two elemental compositions mentioned above. None of the uranium-rich minerals were observed in the migmatitic gneiss within the study area. Consequently, the origin of uranium in the groundwater was not associated with the geology of the surrounding environment, but our investigation proved the existence of abundant allanites containing significant amounts of radioactive thorium and rare earth elements.

Synthesis and Characterization of Tetradentate N2O2 Schiff Base Ligand and its Rare Earth Metal Complexes (사배위 N2O2 Schiff 염기 리간드와 그 희토류 금속착물의 합성 및 특성)

  • The solid complexes of La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III) and Gd(III) with 4-hydroxy-3-(1-{2-(2,4-dihydroxy-benzylidene)-amino phenylimino}-ethyl)-6-methyl-pyran-2-one ($H_2$L) derived from o-phenylenediamine, 3-acetyl-6-methyl-(2H)pyran,2,4(3H)-dione (dehydroacetic acid or DHA) and 2, 4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductometry, magnetic susceptibility, UV-visible, FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis study, and screened for antimicrobial activity. The FT-IR spectral data suggest that the ligand behaves as a dibasic tetradentate ligand with ONNO donor atoms sequence towards central metal ion. From the microanalytical data, the stoichiometry of the complexes has been found to be 1:1 (metal: ligand). The physico-chemical data suggests distorted octahedral geometry for La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III) and Gd(III) complexes. The X-ray diffraction data suggests monoclinic crystal system for La(III) and Ce(III) and orthorombic crystal system for Pr(III) and Nd(III) complexes. Thermal behavior (TG/DTA) of the complexes was studied and kinetic parameters were determined by Horowitz-Metzger and Coats-Redfern methods. The ligand and its metal complexes were screened for antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus Sp. and fungicidal activity against Aspergillus Niger, Trichoderma and Fusarium oxysporum.

The Origin of Paleo-Lacustrine Deposits at Yeoncheon in Chugaryeong Rift Valley, Central Korea (추가령 열곡 연천 고호소층의 퇴적물 기원지 분석)

  • This study aims to estimate the similarities of lacustrine deposits of lava-dammed Yeoncheon paleo-lake by geochemical analysis such as XRF, ICP-AES, and 14C and OSL age datings in Chugaryeong Rift Valley of Central Korea. OSL age of the lacustrine coastal deposit(YC1) is estimated as 0.11-0.13 Ma. It indicates that paleo-deposits may have remained during at least 20,000 years from 0.13 Ma The origin analysis of deposits were carried out by comparison between lacustrine mud layers($YC1{\sim}2$) and various geomorphic materials of vicinity As a result, the similarity of the origin is highest between the paleo-coastal alluvial deposit of Chatan River(YC8), and surface clay deposit of Jeongok lava plateau(YC9) Next higher similarity is between paleo-lacustrine bottom deposit(YC2) and west valley-side mountain slope colluvial materials(YC5). Another high similarities are among present Chatan River channel sediment(YC7), acustrine coastal deposit(YC1) and east valley-side mountain slope colluvial materials(YC4).
