  • A Numerical study of the cavitation within a centrifugal pump is carried out using CFD commercial code, FLUENT. The objective of this study is to predict the onset of cavitation within the pump blade and the degradation in the pressure rise due to the generation and transport of vapor. A pump designed for the study is a six bladed, one-circular arc impeller design suggested by A.J. Stepanoff et al. The Steady-state calculations are performed for a wide range of flow rate without the cavitation to investigate the pump performance. The design head and efficiency show a very good agreement with the numerical results at the design flow rate. After the validation with the numerical results, the pump performance and the onset of cavitation within the blade is predicted by changing NPSH at the design flow rate.

  • A series of hydraulic and cavitation tests are performed in water environment in order to verify the hydraulic and cavitation performance of three types of LOX pumps. All the performances of the pumps are found to be satisfied with each design requirement. In the hydraulic tests, the head and efficiency are increased as the gap between floating ring seals and the impeller shoulder is decreased. In the cavitation tests, some pumps show decrease in the cavitation performance as the flowrate of the pump is decreased.

  • The flow characteristics on a supersonic inlet with bleeding system by changing angles of attack and channel length conditions are studied by computational 3D turbulent flow analysis. A compressible upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method with $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model is used to analysis the inlet flowfield. More non-uniform flowfields are shown at the AIP when angle of attack becomes bigger and bigger. These non-uniform flowfield works the performance aggravating factors of the supersonic engine. Non-uniform flowfield by changing channel length at the various angle of attack are investigated.

  • The design procedure for centrifugal blower with high inlet resistance is not presented yet. Overall fluid dynamic performance is estimated for comparison between the case of atmospheric inlet condition and the present model. Detail information between blades is prepared by using a commercial program, SCRYU-Tetra. A centrifugal blower with large inlet pressure is adopted in an air purifier having filtering devices. As the inlet residence increases the flow rate of the system is decreased. In parallel, outlet area of the system affects the performance of the system in the sense of flow balance. Consequently, the flow balance between the inlet and outlet becomes an important parameter for the design of the scroll casing for the centrifugal blower with high inlet pressure.

  • The purpose of this study is the characteristics of an innovative inlet system with shock/boundary layer interactions by using various types of bumps which are substituted for the conventional bleeding system in supersonic inlet. This study performs a comprehensive numerical effort that be directed at better understanding the three-dimensional flowfield includes shock/boundary layer interaction and growth of turbulent boundary layer that occur around a three-dimensional bump in a supersonic inlet. The characteristics of boundary layer seen in the current numerical simulations indicates the potential capability of the three-dimensional bump to control shock/boundary layer interaction in supersonic inlets.

  • For the improvement of aerodynamic performance of the turbine blade in a turbopump for the liquid rocket engine, the optimization of turbine profile shape has been studied. The turbine in a turbopump in this study is a partial admission of impulse type, which has twelve nozzles and supersonic inflow. Due to the separated nozzles and supersonic expansion, the flow field becomes complicates and shows oblique shocks and flow separation. To increase the blade power, redesign of the blade shape using CFD and optimization method was attempted. The turbine cascade shape was represented by four design parameters. For optimization, genetic algorithm based upon non-gradient search has been selected as a optimizer. As a result, the final blade has about 4 percent more blade power than the initial shape.

  • Vortex and swirl occurring in a pump suction intake sump normally reduce the performance and disturb the safe operation of the circulation water pump in thermal power plants. This paper presents a case study of one particular intake sump design via a CFD analysis and a hydraulic model testing. The physical experiments and numerical analysis were performed under two flow and three level variation conditions. The vortex patterns around the pump suction pipe have been predicted by a commercial CFD code with the k-${\varepsilon}$ model. The model tests were conducted on a 1/10 model for a practical intake sump. The location, number and general pattern of the free surface vortex and submerged vortex predicted by CFD simulation were found to be a good agreement with those observed in the model testing.

  • A thermal vapor compressor in which the subsonic/supersonic flow appears simultaneously, has been accurately designed through the CFD analysis for the various shape parameters such as the primary nozzle shape, converging duct shape, mixing tube diameter, and so on. The performance of the developed thermal vapor compressor has been experimentally verified to be installed in a Multi Effect Desalination(MED) plant as an important element. In this paper, the effects of each parameter are discussed on the basis of CFD results and the experimental results for various boundary conditions(motive pressure, suction pressure, and discharge pressure) are presented in compared with CFD results. The two results show a good agreement with each other within 2 % accuracy with regard to the entrainment ratio.

  • The cross-flow fan which is used for air-conditioner indoor units were studied experimentally. The recent trend shows that the room air-conditioners need to be good-looking. According to the visual design concepts the intake regions of the fan can vary, which leads to the loss of the performance and the increase of the noise of the fan. In order to optimize the performance of the fan and minimize the aerodynamic noise for the system, the performance characteristics and the noise of the cross-flow fan have been investigated at the various conditions of the intake region of the unit.
