  • In this study, a survey was conducted on Chinese students in a university in Busan, in order to investigate the relationship between oral health-related self-efficacy and quality of life according to smoking experience of Chinese students living in South Korea. The results of analyzing collected data with the SPSS 24.0 program showed that students without smoking experience had higher scores in brushing, oral health-related self-efficacy and oral health-related quality of life than those with smoking experience. Brushing self-efficacy was positively correlated with oral health-related self-efficacy, and oral health-related self-efficacy was positively correlated with oral health quality of life, which were all statistically significant. It was found that the presence or absence of smoking experience was associated with oral health promotion and improvement of quality of life in foreign students. Thus, the results of this study are expected to be used as basic data by conveying the necessity of developing oral health promotion programs for healthy living of foreign students.

Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Six themes emerged as a result of the analysis. "Imitating adults with curiosity" delineates first smoking experiences of participants. "Repulsion of cigarettes after first smoking" describes changes in participants' attitude toward smoking after first experience and "Resumed smoking" illustrates re-smoking process to be a peer group and test the taste of cigarettes. "Environmental risks of adolescents smoking" depicts adolescents easily exposed to cigarettes. "Conflicts between smoking and quitting smoking" describes repeated tries to quit smoking and re-smoking processes. Lastly "Reasons of non-smoking for non-smoking adolescents" illustrates the reasons for their non-smoking. Smoking and non-smoking experiences of male high school students' are different from those of female students and adults. Based on the results of the study, programs for preventing smoking and non-smoking education should be designed and executed for male adolescents to improve their health.

  • This study was attempted to understand the effect of the violence victim experience of Korean adolescents on smoking using the data of the 15th (2019) online youth health behavior survey. The subjects of this study were 57,303 people, and the data were analyzed using the SPSS / Win 26.0 program for frequency analysis of complex samples, cross sample analysis (Rao-Scott 2 test), and logistic regression analysis of complex samples. The main result was 12.7% of the smoking subjects. Those who smoked were significantly more 9.6% and 22.0%, respectively, compared to those who had no more than 1 or 2 times of violence. Smoking of Korean adolescents adjusted for gender, grade, academic record, economic status, drinking, family living, and usual stress increased the odds ratio for smoking by 1.66 times when the degree of violence damage experience increased by 1 unit. As a result of the above, as the degree of violence victimization of adolescents increases, the likelihood of smoking increases. Therefore, it is necessary to multidisciplinary convergence effort to the prevention and management of violence of adolescents, and to reduce the smoking of adolescents.

  • This descriptive investigative study was conducted to evaluate middle school students in the city to understand their experience with tobacco use and the factors that affect the intention for tobacco use in the future, as well as to investigate the relevance between student attitudes towards tobacco use and their understanding of the toxicity of its use. A total of 1,044 middle school students located in C city were surveyed from October 13 to November 27, 2015. The results showed significant differences in age, grade, amount of allowance, absence/presence of friends of the opposite sex, and first experience with tobacco use. Moreover, intentions of tobacco use in the future showed significant differences in age, religion, allowance, rate of satisfaction of the school environment, absence/presence of friends of the opposite sex, and academic grade (p<0.05). Based on the above results, it is necessary to implement a consistent anti-smoking education in the home and school starting in elementary school to reduce the rate of tobacco use in middle school students.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the factors related to smoking and smoking differences among adolescents who have experienced smoking using data from the 11th (2015) Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. The data used in this study were from 5,347 middle and high school students who had cigarette smoking and electronic cigarette smoking experience among 68,043 respondents to the 11th (2015) Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. The data were evaluated by frequency analysis, the ${\chi}^2$ test and logistic regression analysis using weighted composite sample analysis. Overall 20% of the total smoking adolescents were dual users and 85.6% of the users of electronic cigarettes used nicotine. The results from multinomial regressions show that: male students (OR 1.63; 95% CI 1.15-2.31), living in the metropolitan area (OR 1.76; 95% CI 1.32-2.33), an average consumption of fast food of once or twice a day (OR 2.48; 95% CI 1.33-4.64), first started smoking during high school (OR 0.76; 95% CI 0.58-0.98), having experience with passive smoking (OR 1.24; 95% CI 1.07-1.44), experience drinking alcohol (OR 2.03; 95% CI 1.65-2.48) and those with higher weekly allowances were more likely to be at risk than dual users. This study provides basic data regarding the dual use of electronic cigarettes and cigarettes by adolescents. The results presented herein will facilitate development of a smoking cessation program and policy.
