  • Energy and environmental concerns accelerate the interest in passive solar heating in buildings, which utilizes solar energy through natural heat transfer. Moreover concerns about environmentally friendly materials were also increased. This study aims to evaluate the thermal performance of a Trombe wall built with earth. The thermal performance of the Trombe walls was analysed with results from computer simulations with TRNSYS 15. The thermal performance of the three types of Trombe wall was compared.: concrete. rammed earth. adobe. It was found that Trombe wall with the thermal storage wall of earth performed better than that of concrete. Rammed earth and adobe Trombe walls gained 4.7% and 12.8% more solar energy. respectively. than the concrete Trombe wall. In earth-applied Trombe walls. the energy gain by natural convection released from the airspace was about 75% of the total solar gains. that took 15% more than concrete Trombe wall. Rammed earth and adobe Trombe walls seem to be more suitable for buildings that use mostly in daytime. such as school, office and so on.

  • In event of selecting construction materials, taking ones found easily around make embodied energy saved. The earth construction could be an eco-friendly engineering from a views of keeping the embodied energy. The pour earth method construction, as one of earth constructions, improves liquidity of earth-mixed properties to build walls or foundations. This study is aimed at evaluating possibilities as to machinery constructions using pumping cars or excavators to be applied on natural non-dried earth which are purchased from sites neighboring to subject building. The study showed that the pumping car used construction was smoothly carried out without any remarkable difficulties and further, a compressed strength was found to keep a certain degree to possibly construct low-story buildings. However, it showed some different levels as to a compressed strength by locations of buildings. In the construction course, we couldn't use remicon plants or a remicon due to field conditions and we are forced to take excavators in compounding or mixing works. But, it is evaluated that actually liquidity or compressed strength will be better than in case of using machineries like remicon plants. These results make us determine that the wall construction using machineries is possible.

  • Geotechnical variability is a complex feature that results from many independent sources of uncertainties, and is mainly affected by inherent variability and measurement errors. This study evaluates the coefficient of variation (COV) of soil properties and soil layers at Song-do region in Korea. Since soil variability is sensitive to soil layers and soil types, the Cays by soil layers (reclaimed layer and marine layer) and the COVs by soil types (clay and silt) were separately evaluated. It is observed that geotechnical variability of marine layer and clay is relatively smaller than that of reclamation layer and silt. And, the highly weathered rock and soil show the higher cays in the interpretation of the strength parameters of the fresh and weathered rock. And the proposed COV of Songdo area can be used for the reliability-based design procedure.

  • We intends to understand the rammed earth method and suggest the possibilities of adoption on high-rise rammed earth structures through the case study on the method. The rammed earth construction has been regarded as one of the solutions in the modern environmental-friendly construction field, thus according to such trend, this study tries to find out the limitations of the rammed earth structures to be multistory and grope for solutions in the attached wall construction method. The procedures of this research is to figure out the limitations of rammed earth structures through theoretical consideration on those structures and analyze the actual cases of them, and to assure the possibilities on the development of the rammed earth method that can make the structures multistory earthen structures in the rammed earth method and induce immediate issues for it.

  • The Korean architect Chung Guyon(1945~2011) is the translator of the Korean edition of Gourna: A Tale of Two Villages(1969) written by the Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy(1900~89). This fact, along with the facts that Chung changed the topic of his graduation thesis(1983) for UPA no.6 in Paris and that he became a supporter of earth architecture after he returned to Korea in 1986, confirms that Chung was strongly influenced by Fathy's architecture in Gourna project. Therefore, the present paper aims at extracting didactic characteristics of Fathy's architecture from the book and comparing them with those of Chung's architecture. The categories of the characteristics extracted from the book (or his architectural activities in the Gourna project) are: clay/earth architecture; communicative and cooperative architecture; and critical stance towards society, and these are commonly found in Chung's architecture, too, not without differences from Fathy's owing to the gap between the two architects' contexts. Reviewing these characteristics, this paper argues that Fathy and Chung tried to improve society in each context, working as both architect and social activist.

  • Fast industrialization caused from Descartes' dichotomy has enormously developed our world, but endangered the ecosystem. In this study, the ecosystem aesthetics is not only a critique against existing growth-ideology and technical civilization, but also the art pursuing the life as an artistic state and achieving the dream for qualitatively different new future. Lao-tzu's Natural Beauty assumes that the adaptation to natural laws can lead every purpose's achievement. Based on such theoretical alternative, the earth construction as a medium for coexisting mankind, nature and construction interacts with the other objects through the natural affinity, the energy efficiency, the material generation. The earth construction provides the images of naivety, naturalness, folk as well as emotional stability in cultural terms. This study's direction and method are as follows. First, it researches the ecosystem aesthetics from the Taoism viewpoint, the alternative for environmental healing based on theoretical reviews about the ecosystem aesthetics. Second, it researches the earth construction's ecosystem aesthetic features and construction features from the low-tech aspect in continual construction genealogy. Third, it analyzes some cases targeting domestic buildings by drawing out expression methods and features through the connectivity of earth construction and ecosystem aesthetics. The earth construction lies between the heaven and the earth, but coexists in natural cycle. The earth construction caused from ecosystem aesthetics will be a future alterative, and various studies about its features and methods should be continued.

  • In the last century, mainly our cultures destroyed a lot of ourselves as well as of our natural environment by deterioration, pollution and exploitation. Building activities are for a third responsible for these disasters and they are fully the reason for the growing Sick Building Syndrome. In result, Materials of the building should be derived as much as possible from nature, and walls should be made of yellow soil, or of bricks made from yellow soil The adobe can easily have larger or smaller dimensions, and different thickness as weil, according to the purpose for which they are meant, and the structural load-bearing function they have to fulfill. In spite of the importance of clay, research or experiment of clay has been quite weak. However, in stead of endowing the clay with the value as natural architectural material, we want to evaluate it as an important element of the environment.

  • A new construction methodology has been proposed on a scientific basis to reason a rational explanation for the structure and the present configuration of Chum-Sung-Dae. This is because there is no way to otherwise explain the gap between our expectation that the people in Shilla are assumed to be and the problems, such as the use of a temporary supporting structure including falsework, the use of a conveying device for stonework and the practice of soil fill, raised when the construction method in nowadays is applied to the structure. Furthermore, it is because the questions, such as the difference of an azimuth angle between the southward opening and the square podium, the skewed circular plan in layers of the body, misalignment between neighboring layers of the body, disagreement between the inclination due to slight sidesway and the eccentricity in each layer of the circular body, perfectly aligned vertical and horizontal joints and the existence of soil fill, raised from the present configuration of Chum-Sung-Dae, also require a reasonable explanation based on scientific evidences, if any. Therefore, the proposed new construction methodology, in which the soil hill outside as well as the soil fill inside the Chum-Sung-Dae may have been utilized as a temporary scaffolding system for construction, is the highly probable one that the builders of Chum-Sung-Dae might have inevitably employed. The existence of great tombs, scattered in Hwang-Nam-Dong close to Chum-Sung-Dae, implies that the people of Shilla might have accepted the proposed new construction methodology as a natural one.
