Cell Phone Addiction in School-Age Children and Related Factors (학령 초기 아동의 휴대전화 중독 정도와 영향 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify cell phone addiction in school-age children and factors influencing addiction. Methods: The participants were 163 parents of elementary school students in the 1st to 4th grades. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires completed by the parents, and analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 19.0 IBM program. Results: Of the children, 86.5% were reported as being average users, 9.2%, at risk users, and 4.3%, at high risk users. Cell phone addiction in the children was significantly different according to games played by the children and parents' monthly income. Significant factors influencing cell phone addiction in the children were children's self-control, games played by the children, parents' cell phone addiction and parental control for children's cell phone use, explaining 24% of variance in cell phone addiction. Conclusion: The findings indicate that cell phone addiction in school-age children is influenced by parent-related factors as well as personal factors. Therefore approaches to education programs on cell phone use in school-age children should include parent-related factors as well as personal factors of the children.

Longitudinal Relationship between Addictive Use of Mobile Phones and Learning Activities for Elementary School Students : Multiple and Complex Group Analysis across Gender (초등학생의 휴대전화 중독적 사용과 학습활동의 종단적 관계 검증 : 성별 간 다집단 복합 분석)

  • The study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship between addictive use of mobile phones and learning activities for elementary school students and to analyze (1)temporal changes of the addictive use of mobile phones and learning activities, (2)temporal relationship between them, and (3)multiple and complex group analysis across gender on the relationship. For the study, 3-year longitudinal data(2010-2012) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey and autoregressive cross-lagged modeling were used. The findings showed that the addictive use of mobile phones and learning activities had a significant positive effect on the future selves of children over time. The addictive use of mobile phones influenced positively subsequent learning activities, but, the learning activities did not affect the addictive use of mobile phones. Further, there were no significant gender differences in the longitudinal relationship. The study provided the useful data to make guidelines on how to protect mobile phone addiction for elementary school students.

Effects of Depression Scale, Interaction Anxiety and School Adjustment on Cellular Phone Addiction of Teenagers (청소년의 우울, 대인불안, 학교적응이 휴대전화 중독에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the predictors of students depress, Interaction anxiety, school adjustment on cellular phone addiction of teenagers. The subjects for this study were 613 teenagers composed of 249 middle school students, 337 high school students in Daejeon. The data was conducted by using a correlations coefficient and the multiple regression analysis. According to the analysis result, correlations among measured variables of students depress, interaction anxiety, school adjustment, cellular phone addiction were significant. Secondly, the multiple regression analysis result showed that students depress, peer relations, and interaction anxiety variables to most greatly explain cellular phone addiction. These results indicate that cellular phone addiction related to depress, interaction anxiety of teenagers.

Development of a Cell Phone Addiction Scale for Korean Parents of Young Children (아동의 휴대전화 중독 사정을 위한 부모용 도구 개발)

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop a cell phone addiction scale for Korean parents of young children, and to evaluate the reliability and validity of the developed scale. Methods: The scale was developed through construction of a conceptual framework, generation of initial items, verification of content validity, selection of secondary items, preliminary study, and extraction of final items. Participants were 465 parents and 178 children. Data were analyzed using item analysis, factor analysis, criterion related validity, internal consistency, and split-half reliability. Results: Twenty items were categorized into three factors explaining 60.3% of total variance. Factors were named as withdrawal - 4 items, loss of control - 9 items, and persistence - 7 items. Scores for the scale were significantly correlated with self-control, impulsiveness, cell phone use, and cell phone addiction of children as measured by a scale for Korean children. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the 20 items was .94, and Guttman coefficient was .87. Scale scores identified children as high risk users, at risk users, or average users by standard scores. Conclusion: The results suggest that the cell phone addiction scale for Korean parents is a reliable and valid instrument to measure cell phone addiction in young children.

Effects of Self Esteem, Impulsive Behavior and Mental Health on Cellular Phone Addiction of Adolescents (청소년의 자아존중감, 충동성 및 정신건강이 휴대전화 중독에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was done to investigate the relationship between self esteem, impulsive behavior and mental health among adolescents who were cellular phone addiction and those who were not. Methods: The data were collected using questionnaire from the sample of 239 middle school students. The data were collected from April 8 to 19, 2013. Data were analyzed using frequencies, means, ${\chi}^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, t-test and logistic regression analysis with SPSS 20.0. Results: Firstly, Significant differences were found for grade, sex, period, buying motives, the number of the messages/day, use, phone bill, callers between students who were cellular phone addiction and those who were not. Secondly, Self esteem for the cellular phone addiction were lower than for those in the non-addiction group, and impulsive behavior and mental health were higher. Thirdly, The logistic regression analysis revealed that self esteem, non-planning impulsiveness, mental health total, grade, sex, period, and the number of the messages/day significantly associated with being a cellular phone addiction. Conclusions: The result of this study offer basic data for the development of intervention programs to prevent adolescents cellular phone addiction.

Effects of a Prevention Program for Media Addiction on Television Addiction, Internet Addiction, Cellular Addiction, and Impulsiveness in Elementary School Students (매체 중독 예방 프로그램이 초등학생의 텔레비전 중독, 인터넷 중독, 휴대전화 중독 및 충동성에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop a prevention program for media addiction in elementary school students, and to examine its effects on television addiction, internet addiction, cellular phone addiction, and impulsiveness. Methods: The study was designed using a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 58 elementary school students (29 in the experimental group and 29 in the control group). Students in the experimental group were given the prevention program for media addiction. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results: Students in the experimental group reported a significant decrease in television addiction compared to students in the control group. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that the prevention program for media addiction was effective in decreasing television addiction in elementary school students.

The Relationships among Impulsivity, Internalizing - Externalizing Behavior Problems, Mobile Phone Addiction and Internet Addiction on Adolescents (청소년의 충동성, 내재화 문제행동, 외현화 문제행동과 인터넷 중독 및 휴대폰 중독과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study uses a structural equation model to investigate the relationships between impulsivity, internalizing - externalizing behavior problems, internet addiction, and mobile phone addiction in adolescents. We investigated whether internalizing - externalizing behavior problems plays a mediating role in the relationship between impulsivity and mobile phone addiction/internet addiction. Survey responses of 433 middle school students in Seoul areas were analyzed for this study. The findings of this study are as follows: (1) The "research model" in this study was found suitable, and was selected as a final model. Structural equation modeling analyses indicated that impulsivity influenced internet addiction and mobile phone addiction, and externalizing behavior problems showed a significant effect on mobile phone addiction. In addition, impulsivity had a significant effect on internalizing - externalizing behavior problems. (2) Externalizing behavior problems was a mediator in the relationship between impulsivity and mobile phone addiction. Lastly, the meanings and implications of this research to counseling strategies and education were suggested in this research.

The Effect of the Social Withdrawal on the Community Spirit of an University Student : Focused on the Mediating Effect of the Mobile Phone Addiction and the Aggression (사회적 위축이 대학생의 공동체 의식에 미치는 영향 : 휴대전화 중독과 공격성의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to invest the mediating effect of the mobile phone addiction and the aggression within the path which the social withdrawal have explained the community spirit of an university student. For the purpose, this study have chosen a total of 1,347 cases as an analysis target from the Korean Youth-Child Pannel Study(KYPS) 7th wave. And this study have used the Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) from AMOS 18.0 as an analysis method. This study have also used sobel test for finding out the effectiveness of the mediating path. This study found these analysis results through the analysis method which this study have suggested. First, this study have verified the effectiveness of the direct path that the social withdrawal predicted the community spirit of an university student. Second, this study have found the effectiveness of the mediating path composed by the mobile phone addiction and the aggression. As these analysis results, this study have proposed the implication for the community spirit of an university student and suggestion for a follow-up study.
