  • The flexural-stiffness formula of the wale for the innovative prestressed support (IPS) system was precisely derived, and the equivalent beam stiffness was introduced for application in the actual design of the IPS wale. The cable tension forces of the IPS wale were calculated in both cases, and the axial-deformation effects were included and ignored, respectively. The central displacements of the 1-post, 2-post, 3-post, and 4-post IPS wales were calculated based on the principle of virtual work. The effects of the IPS wale length and cable inclination angle were also investigated using the derived central displacements. The simplified equivalent flexural stiffness of the IPS wale is presented herein for design purposes, and the validity of the proposed design formula was verified through its comparison with the FE and analysis solutions.

  • Two-row overlap pile wall, currently under development for use in deep excavations, is a novel retaining structure designed to perform itself as a cutoff wall as well as a high-stiffness wall by constructing four overlapping piles arranged in zigzag manner at a time using a tetra-axis auger. This wall has a relatively complex cross-section, compared with other types of pile wall, which would make it difficult to determine design parameters related to cross-section. In this study, a flexural rigidity equation has been derived by analyzing both theoretically and statistically various wall cross-sections with different pile diameters and overlap lengths. The flexural rigidity equation was found to show the maximum error rate of 3%.

  • The primary objective of the present study was to attempt to quantify the effect of the existing codes for CFT composite section on initial section flexural stiffness, based on the measured vibration frequency of CFT truss girders. The formulae for the initial flexural stiffness of the composite sections in the different codes are compared with the free vibration test results. The results of the free vibration test on the CFT truss girders are in good agreement with the analysis results when used in ACI formulae. The free vibration analysis of CFT truss girders for different f/L ratios was conducted to determine how the natural frequency of the CFT truss girder is affected by different f/L ratios. The presence of the f/L ratios in CFT truss girders alters its frequencies of vibration because of the global stiffness of the CFT girders. The frequency in horizontal modes decreases as the f/L ratio increases. However, the frequency in vertical modes increases as the f/L ratio increases.

  • Reinforced concrete beams are often retrofitted with various FRP composite sheets. This paper is focused on the comparison of structural performance of various FRP sheets and proposal of the retrofitting design formula. Effects of the FRP kinds(AFRP, GFRP, CFRP) and the reinforcing steel ratio on behavior of the retrofitting beams are tested and analyzed with particular emphasis on the maximum load capacity, stiffness, and ductility. The experimental work included 4 point flexural testing of 3.2m span reinforced concrete beams with bonded external reinforcements. The results show that the difference of FRP kinds is not large and the flexural load capacity is mainly affected by stiffness of the retrofitting materials. This paper also proposes the design formula on the retrofitting reinforced concrete flexural members and checks with this experimantal work and previous research results.

  • The purpose of this study was the estimation and formulation of orthotropic flexural rigidities considering the deformed shape for a plate stiffened with rectangular ribs. Analytical results of methods modifying the flexural rigidity of the x-direction, the y-direction or both directions were compared at the center, the x-directional quarter point and the y-directional quarter point of stiffened plates loaded at the center. The composite method modifying the flexural rigidity of both directions improves the accuracy compared with the other methods. Moreover, the ratio of modified coefficients for each directional rigidity can be expressed as a function corresponding to each dimension of stiffened plates. The application of modified coefficient functions to various types of stiffened plates with different boundary conditions, aspect ratios and rib arrangement shows that the increment of the error ratio is small compared with examples of this study and the application of proposed functions shows more accurate results than previous methods modifying the flexural rigidity. Therefore, by using the modified coefficient functions proposed in this study, the orthotropic plate analysis of plates stiffened with rectangular ribs can easily achieve more accurate displacement results.

  • An approximate method for the calculation of creep deflections of reinforced concrete beams under sustained service loads is proposed. The position of neutral axis and strain and stress distribution of fully cracked section after creep is determined from the requirements of strain compatibility and equilibruim of a section and then the long-term flexural rigidity of fully cracked section is determined based on the new neutral axis. The long-term flexural rigidity of uncracked section at the level of the reinforcenment. The approach of calculating long-term effective flexural rigidity and defections is similar to the current American Concrete Institue procedure for calculating effecitve moment of inertia and short-term deflections. The accuracy of the analysis is verified by comparison with several experimental mesurements of beam deflectons. The result is good between the theotetical values and mesured valus.

  • This paper presents the study of the bending behavior of mooring chain links for keeping the position of the offshore floating structures. In general, chain links have been thought as the axial members due to the fundamental boundary condition. But, the flexural stiffness can be induced to the contact surface between chain links when friction occurs at the surface of the chain links due to high tensile force. Especially, the mooring chains for offshore floating platforms are highly tensioned. If the floater suffers rotational motion and the mooring chain links are highly tensioned, the rotation between contact links, induced by the floater rotation, generates the bending moment and relevant stresses due to the unexpected bending stiffness. In 2005, the mooring chain links for the Girassol Buoy Platform were failed after just 5 months after facility installation, and the accident investigation research concluded the chain failure was mainly caused by the fatigue due to the unexpected bending stress fluctuation. This study investigates the pattern of the induced bending stiffness and stresses of the highly tensioned chain links by nonlinear finite element analysis.

  • For simple and accurate analysis for behaviors of multi-span suspension bridges which are expected to be frequently constructed as strait-crossing bridges, the deflection theory as the peculiar theory of a suspension bridge can be applied. This paper performs a structural analysis for four-span suspension bridges using the deflection theory. Simply-supported beams with tension are used for girders and the deflections of the beams due to the vertical loads and moments at supports are calculated. The calculation is performed iteratively until the deflections satisfy the compatibility equations of cables. The results of the deflection theory analysis considering tower rigidity are compared with those of the finite element analysis for verification. Importance of the tower rigidity for four-span suspension bridges is confirmed using various compatibility equations of the cable due to variation of the constraint conditions between main cable and top of towers. In addition, the simple parametric analysis for variation of the center tower rigidity is performed.

  • A study on the evaluation of proper spacing and required flexural rigidity of cross beams in composite two I-section steel girder bridges without a lateral and sway bracing system was performed. Specifically, a 2-lane, 40-m simple span bridge and a 3-span continuous (40+50+10m) bridge were designed, and structural analyses under dead load before and after composite, live, wind, and seismic loads were performed using spacing and flexural rigidity or cross beams as parameters. Through parametric analysis, the effect on the stresses due to the combination of loads and live load distribution was investigated. In addition. material and geometric nonlinear analyses under dead load before composite were performed to evaluate the lateral buckling strength of the steel girders and cross beam. Based on the results or such analyses, the proper spacing and flexural rigidity of cross beams at intermediate points and supports were proposed.

  • Because of the different flexural rigidity between longitudinal and transverse direction, orthotropic plate theory may be suitable for describing the behavior of composite deck. The ratio of flexural rigidity between longitudinal and transverse direction affects the live load moment. Because of the ratio of flexural rigidity of concrete unfilled steel grid deck has a direct relationship with main bearing bar spacing, it is concluded that the study for the distribution factor which is effected by main bearing bar spacing and aspect ratio is needed. In this study, evaluate the live load moment of concrete unfilled steel grid deck using the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification and presents the distribution coefficient equation for concrete unfilled steel grid deck.
