  • Reinforced concrete beam are very diverse materials that are used to bending reinforcement. Recently the case of FRP flexural reinforcement is actively being used is an excellent weight - rigidity. However, use of FRP bending reinforcement in brittleness material properties of concrete in an actual field application causes destruction of detachment and attachment is being considered as a major cause of destruction. For hybrid laminating plates, tensile and three-point bending tests were performed considering various designs and fabricating methods for hybrid FRP plates. Tensile property of each test specimen was investigated and the research parameter of hybrid laminating plates considered here is the combining ratio of fiber to aluminum contents.

  • This paper concentrates on the nonlinear analysis of the reinforced concrete flexural members under cyclic loading. To develop a nonlinear material model, concrete is treated as an orthotropic nonlinear material and steel is modeled as an elasto-plastic material. The models for hysteresis behavior with stiffness degradation in compression and for crack opening and closing in tension are included. The finite element computer program for the nonlinear analysis of RC flexural members under cyclic loading is developed. The accuracy and reliabihty of the numerical procedure IS demonstrated by the FEM analysis and test results of underreinforced concrete beams.

  • The purpose of this study is to discuss how strength and ductility of each system in low-rise reinforced concrete buildings composed of extremely brittle, shear and flexural failure lateral-load resisting systems have influence on seismic capacities of the overall system, which is based on nonlinear seismic response analyses of single-degree-of-freedom structural systems. In order to simulate the triple lateral-load resisting system, structures are idealized as a parallel combination of two modified origin-oriented hysteretic models and a degrading trilinear hysteretic model that fail primarily in extremely brittle, shear and flexure, respectively. Stiffness properties of three models are varied in terms of story shear coefficients, and structures are subjected to various ground motion components. By analyzing these systems, interaction curves of demand strengths of the triple system for various levels of ductility factors are finally derived for practical purposes. The result indicates that demand strength levels derived can be used as a basic information for seismic evaluation and design criteria of low-rise reinforced concrete buildings having the triple lateral-load resisting system.

  • The flexural behaviors of two types of beam members exposed to freeze-thaw cycles were evaluated. This study aims to examine the effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the behavior characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. For the purpose, a part of the beam specimens were damaged until yielding of tension reinforcement was reached, before they were exposed to 150 and 300 cycles of freeze-thaw. Cyclic tests, as well as monotonic tests, were conducted to evaluate the stiffness degradation characteristics when same cycle is repeated. The material tests showed that relative dynamic modulus of concrete exposed to 300 cycles of freeze-thaw moderately decreased to 86.8% of normal concrete, indicating that concrete used in this study has good durability against freeze and thaw damage. The results of monotonic tests showed reduction of flexural strength, ductility and stiffness of the beam specimens exposed to freeze-thaw cycles compared with those of the control speciments. In particular, BDF13 specimens, which had been subjected to artificial cracking damage, did not showed enough flexural strength to satisfy nominal moment required by current concrete structure design code. In the monotonic tests results, BF75 specimens exposed to freeze-thaw cycles showed 10% or more cyclic stiffness degradation. Therefore, it was thought that deformation of concrete in compression have to be considered in design process of members under cyclic load, such as seismic device.

  • Current specification prescribes that upper and lower reinforcement mat is required in the same amount to resist negative and positive moment in bridge decks. But the negative moment is much smaller than positive moment because the actual behavior of decks consists of local deflection of slab and global deflection of girder. From this study, the analysis method based on harmonic analysis and slope-deflection method was developed and verified by finite element method. The negative moment, obtained from this method, were smaller than those computed based on the KHBDC specifications as much as 40∼50% in the middle of bridge. The amount of reduction of the design negative moment was shown herein to be dependent on variable parameters as shape factor(S/L) of slab, relative stiffness ratio of girder and deck slab, and so on. This investigations indicate that the upper reinforcement mat to resist negative moment can be removed. But further experimental study is required to consider durability and serviceability. From this new design concept, the construction expense can be reduced and the problem of decreasing durability resulting from corrosion of upper reinforcement steel settled.

  • Parametric studies on nonhomogeneous pile and homogeneous pile installed in clay were performed through the developed technique to investigate the effects of considered factors on the lateral pile behaviors. Values of the parameters with embedment depths of the two piles having different flexural rigidity show that values of the parameters for more rigid pile were greater than those for smaller one. Parameters for the case of the nonhomogeneous pile were converged to the same ones of the homogeneous pile as nodal point moves away from point of material boundary. In order to determine adequate upper length of the nonhomogeneous pile, changing patterns of the parameters, lateral displacement, member forces and so forth should be compared.

  • Recently, high-strength concrete has been frequently used for long-span bridges and high-rise buildings. Deflection of reinforced concrete structures is uncertain, so that many researchers have proposed various equations in order to predict deflection through experiments. Domestic concrete specification offers a procedure to evaluate deflection using effective moment of inertia which was proposed by Branson. However, it is inaccurate for high strength concrete compared to the method suggested in Eurocode 2 in that Eurocode 2 predicts deflection by using curvature integration of effective moment of inertia. In this study, experimental data about deflection of reinforced concrete beams were analyzed to compare domestic standard and Eurocode 2.

  • Since concrete has a low tensile strength compared to the compressive strength, reinforced concrete flexural members represent easy crack occurance under a small load. In order to overcome this problem, steel fiber reinforced concrete has been developed to compensate the tensile strength and brittleness of members. However, in the design formula of the domestic building code, it is not specified in the design formula reflecting the material characteristics. Therefore, the field application of the steel fiber reinforced concrete have had many restrictions. In this study, a flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete is proposed by collecting and analyzing the material properties of material test results conducted by various researchers, and verified by the test results of cracking and stiffness evaluation of flexural members based on the proposed model. As a result of this study, the flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete which can reflect the mixing ratio and aspect ratio of the steel fiber was proposed and the validity of the proposed material model equation was evaluated from the load-deflection relationship in the flexural test of the slab member.

  • The load deformation behavior of the cap-pile-soil system is investigated, based on numerical analysis. Special attention is given to consideration of pile cap flexibility. Rigid pile cap analysis and flexible cap analysis were conducted for comparison. A numerical method that takes into account the coupling between the rigidities of the piles, the cap, and the column has been introduced to analyze the response of pile group supported columns. The prediction of the lateral loads and bending moments in the pile cap is much more conservative for a flexible cap than for a rigid cap.

  • Cross-beam in the existing temporary bridge system is usually installed to prevent the lateral-torsional buckling of girders and to promote the construction efficiency. However, most of this cross-beams are connected to the girder web by bolts, and therefore, gravitational load resisting capacity of the cross-beams are negligibly small. In recent years, new temporary bridge system, in which the cross-beams and girders are connected to resist the external loads as a unit, was developed. In this paper, we present the experimental and analytical study results pertaining to the structural behavior and load carrying capacity of new temporary bridge system. From the results of study, it was found that the continuous cross-beam increased the flexural rigidity and reduced the maximum flexural stress in the girder. In addition, it was also found that the new temporary bridge system developed is more appropriate for the application in the long-span temporary bridge.
