  • In this study, an experiment for the biaxial behavior of specimens was carried out to identify whether the isotropic flexure tensile stress of concrete in the BFT method is feasible. Another experiment for the improvement of the BFT method was conducted to ensure the isotropic flexure tensile stress of BFT specimens during the test. In addition, the biaxial flexure strength of concrete given by the improved BFT method was compared to the uniaxial flexure strength by the four-point bending test. Test results show that the isotropic flexure tensile stress of concrete using the BFT method was highly influenced by the surface conditions and warping of the specimens. Using improved BFT method, we could obtained the isotropic flexure tensile stress of concretes. The biaxial flexure strength of BFT was about 32% greater than the uniaxial flexure strength of the four-point bending test. In the experiment, with the smaller scatter, the improved BFT method gave a reliable biaxial flexure strength like the four-point bending test.

  • The objective of this paper is to evaluate the flexural tensile strength of unreinforced concrete masonry wall to ensure the structural safety in out-of-plane behaviors under the wind or earthquake loads. Flexural tensile strength of unreinforced concrete masonry wall has been obtained from the full scale tests of total 327 specimens and the statistical analysis are performed for each of the cases. The flexural tensile strength derived from experiments is classified as 13 groups according to masorny units, mortar ingredients, and the direction of tensile stresses and the mean tensile strength and the variable coefficient are obtained for each case. The uniform and concentrated transverse loads have been applied over the face of the wall specimens. The ultimate mean flexural tensile strengths are distributed from 1,564 kPa to 363 kPa according to masonry units, mortar ingredients, and other factors. The allowable flexural tension stress criteria will be established based on the mean flexural tensile strengths in the future.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the bond strength between old and new concrete as well as flexural tensile strength of concrete. To achieve this purpose, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and strength tests using a series of specimens have been carried out. The present study represents that the flexural bond strength between old and new concrete is much smaller than that of flexural tensile strength. The ratio of bond strength to flexural tensile strength ranged through 15~27%. It is seen that concrete-to-concrete bond strength has been affected by curing condition. Also, test results of tensile strength show that recommendation by ACI 363 committee is estimated to be more realistic than another recommendations for predicting tensile strength of concrete.

  • In this study, we conducted experiment and finite element analysis on the flexural behavior of the round concrete panels according to the evaluation method of biaxial flexural tensile strengths. The Round Panel Test (RPT) and the Biaxial Flexure Test (BFT) were used to determine the biaxial flexural strength of round plain concrete panels. In order to understand the stress distribution on the panels, we measured load-strain relationship at the center of the panels' bottom surface. Test results show that fracture pattern in RPT and BFT panels are similar, and the tensile stress distribution is uniform in all directions at the center of the bottom surface of the panels for both RPT and BFT. The distribution of stresses in two test specimens coincided with the analysis result. The average biaxial flexural strength of RPT is about 29% greater than those of the BFT. The coefficient of variations (COV) of the RPT and BFT for the biaxial flexure strength is 8%, 6%, respectively, which indicates that BFT method is useful and reliable for determining biaxial flexural strengths of the concrete.

  • Size-effect correction factors of the flexural test specimens, which had controled cement concrete pavement quality, were investigated and derived to be easily used in field. We couldn't find the size-effects in this size range (10, 12, 15cm) of specimens, which were made of 32mm crushed aggregates, and the theoretical verification was presented by Bazant's equations. Finally, non-dimensional chart for size-effect correction was proposed, covering the relationship between compressive strengths and w/c ratios.

  • In this study, bending tests were performed on beam specimens made of UHPCC with the fiber content range of 0~5 vol% to investigate the contribution of fiber content to first cracking strength and flexural tensile strength. Also, four-point bending tests for unnotched beam as well as three-point bending test for notched beam were performed to estimate the effect of the presence of notch on the strengths. The experiment result showed that the increase in fiber content made linear improvement in the flexural tensile strength; whereas first cracking strength was enhanced only when at least 1 vol% of fibers was incorporated. Comparison of the bending test results with and without notch showed that the notch effect varied with the fiber content. The increase in fiber content diminished the effect of stress concentration on the notch tip, reducing the difference in the strengths. With much higher fiber content, the effect of stress concentration almost disappeared and the defection on cracking plane or the size effect dominated the strengths, consequently resulting in higher strengths in the notched beams than the unnotched ones.

  • This paper aims to evaluating the interlayer strength of 3D-printed concrete with interlayer reinforcement. According to lap splices, two reinforcement methods were considered. One method did not include lap splices of interlayer reinforcement, but the other method included lap splices with length of 40mm. In addition, two different curing conditions were applied: air curing conditions and water curing conditions. The compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural tensile strengths of 3D-printed concrete specimens were measured in three loading directions with different reinforcement methods and curing conditions. Splitting and flexural tensile strengths decreased considerably when tensile stresses acted over the interlayers of 3D-printed concrete specimens. However, the flexural tensile strength or interlayer bonding strength of the printed specimens increased significantly at the interlayers when the longitudinal interlayer reinforcement penetrated printed layers. Interlayer bonding strength of printed concrete decreased after air curing treatment was applied because interlayers of printed concrete with more pores formed by the air cu ring conditions are more vulnerable to the load.

  • In this paper, the effect of compression levels on the strengths of porous concrete using bottom ash aggregates was analyzed. Coal bottom ash (CBA) was used as aggregate in porous concrete in this study. The aggregate size types used in the CBA concrete mixtures were catagorized into two different ones. One included only a single aggregate particle size and the other included hybrid aggregate particles mixed at a ratio of 8:2 volume proportion. The water-binder ratio was fixed at 0.30, and the compression levels were applied at 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 MPa valu es to fabricate a porou s concrete specimen. The total porosity, compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural tensile strengths were tested and analyzed. When the compression level increased, the total porosity decreased, meanwhile the compressive, split tensile, and flexural tensile strengths increased. The total porosity of concrete using hybrid aggregate was lower and the strength was larger than those of concrete using single-type aggregate. Finally, the correlation between the total porosity, compressive, split tensile, and flexural tensile strengths of porous concrete were presented. The total porosity and strength characteristics showed an inversely proportional correlation.

  • Since concrete has a low tensile strength compared to the compressive strength, reinforced concrete flexural members represent easy crack occurance under a small load. In order to overcome this problem, steel fiber reinforced concrete has been developed to compensate the tensile strength and brittleness of members. However, in the design formula of the domestic building code, it is not specified in the design formula reflecting the material characteristics. Therefore, the field application of the steel fiber reinforced concrete have had many restrictions. In this study, a flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete is proposed by collecting and analyzing the material properties of material test results conducted by various researchers, and verified by the test results of cracking and stiffness evaluation of flexural members based on the proposed model. As a result of this study, the flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete which can reflect the mixing ratio and aspect ratio of the steel fiber was proposed and the validity of the proposed material model equation was evaluated from the load-deflection relationship in the flexural test of the slab member.

  • In this paper, an experimental study on the strengths and material properties of concrete manufactured by using coal gangue, as a fine aggregate was conducted. Experimental parameters included coal gangue aggregate contents as a replacement of fine aggregate by 50 % and 100 % (by volume) and fly ash contents. The water-binder ratio was fixed at 0.38. In addition, 30 % of the OPC binder was replaced with fly ash in some mixtures. Test of the unit weight, compressive, split tensile, and flexural tensile strength of concrete were performed and test results were analyzed. Unit weight, compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural tensile strength decreased as the coal recycled aggregates increased. In addition, TGA and SEM experiments, which are microstructure experiments, were conducted to analyze thermogravimetric analysis and ITZ by section.
