  • This paper presents a numerical study for developing the moment magnifier method that is applicable to RC flat plates subject to combined axial compressive and floor load. For the nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities was developed. The flat plates to be studied are designed in accordance with the Direct Design Method in Korean Building Code for Structural Concrete. This paper proposes the buckling force and the moment magnification factor for the flat plate under the governing load condition that is the combined vertical and subsequently applied uniaxial compressive load. The buckling force is defined with two ingredients: the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity. Parametric studies are performed to investigate variations of the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity. Based on the numerical results, this paper provides the design values of the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity, and the design procedure for the moment magnifier method.

  • Because of the defect in design, damage in using period, and deterioration in long term exposure to severe environmental condition, degradation of performance in RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures has occurred. This paper contains durability performance evaluation in railway bridges which covers eight districts through field investigation. For the target structures, durability performance is evaluated and the critical problems in use are derived. Additionally, service lifes for the deteriorated structures are evaluated through Durability-Environment index method based on the results from field investigation, and the results are compared with those from the condition assuming the structures without defect, damage, and deterioration. The target structures which consist of RC T girder, PSC girder, RC box, and Rahmen are investigated and the critical damage patterns are derived. They are evaluated to be cracks in PSC girder end, flexural cracks in PSC girder, crack around EPT anchor, and flexural cracks in RC T girder and RC box. The reasons for the critical patterns are also investigated. This study can be utilized for the repair planning considering the different district and the structure types.

  • As a result of recent research, it is reported that the periodic replacements criterion of rails is able to extend as grinding rail surface and using the continuous welded rail (CWR). This study evaluated correlation between conditions of track and load capacity of rail by analysing the dynamic response of track while the metro train is running. Also, it was converted the measured stress waveform into stress frequency histogram by the rain-flow counting methods, and then accumulated fatigue damage ratio and remaining service life of laid rail were calculated so as the apply the equivalence of stress to S-N curve of a new welded rail. Finally, this study suggests a revision of the periodic replacements criterion of CWR, which was based on accumulated passing tonnage, classified by the types and conditions of track system.

  • This research presents the structural performance and an improving technique for flexural capacity of road safety facilities based on the damage cases by wind pressure. Among road safety facilities, a support frame of soundproofing walls is considered as a prototype structure and its corresponding structural behaviors and section design are performed mainly by analytical and experimental studies. On the basis of analytical results, glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) with an epoxy matrix which is high stiffness-to-weight ratio was used for applied one of strengthening techniques and their results shows that support frame strengthened by GFRP is the most effective compared to other cases proposed in this research for advancing its flexural improvement, Finally, optimum section design was performed analytically to evaluate wind-resistance capacity and its result would be very useful for developing a practical design guideline for Road safety facilities under strong wind.

  • The static strengths of the existing RC beams were experimentally investigated in this paper to understand the strength characteristics of existing structural members and to get appropriate data in strengthening RC members in the remodelling construction. Ten RC beams were prepared by cutting and extracting directly from the demolition site of apartment housings and tested in order to evaluate the flexural and shear strengths of existing RC beams by their geometric condition. From the test results, it was found that most of the specimens had a sufficient structural capacity except for some special case, for example, specimens with severe cracks or concrete losses caused by improper casting. Therefore, the severely deteriorated members originated from bad concrete casting or careless construction process should be repaired and strengthened in remodelling construction.

  • This study presents a shear strength estimation model, in which the shear failure of a reinforced concrete (RC) member is assumed to be governed by the flexure-shear mechanism. Two shear demand curves and corresponding potential capacity curves for cracked tension and uncracked compression zones are derived, for which the bond mechanism developed between reinforcing bars and surrounding concrete is considered in flexural analysis. The shear crack concentration factor is also addressed to consider the so-called size effect induced in large RC members. In addition, unlike exising methods, a new formulation was addressed to consider the interaction between the shear contributions of concrete and stirrup. To verify the proposed method, an extensive shear database was established, and it appeared that the proposed method can capture the shear strengths of the collected test specimens regardless of their material properties, geometrical features, presence of stirrups, and bond characteristics.

  • In this study, Hollow Concrete Filled FRP Tube Pile(HCFFT Pile) was proposed as a model to utilize the advantages of composite piles and solve the problem of corrosion, which is a disadvantage of CFT piles, and a numerical analysis model was developed to analyze their behavior. The strain compatibility method was applied considering the damage plastic behavior of concrete, the yield plastic behavior of steel, and the elastic behavior of FRP. The flexural strength calculation equation of HCFFT piles was proposed considering the change of the FRP tube section according to the distance from the neutral axis. The flexural strength calculation equation, numerical analysis results, and experimental results were compared and analyzed to verify their adequacy. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the optimal design of various HCFFT piles using FRP.

  • This study shows the test results of seven RC beams retrofitted with modified polymer system and parametric study about the effects of tensile strength of retrofitting materials by analytical method on the flexural behavior. The main parameters are the retrofitted depth and length. The beams are loaded to the failure by four-point loading. Test results show that the effect of the retrofitted length on the structural behavior is more significant than that of depth. As the retrofitted depth is increased, the beams represents the brittle failure mode The non-linear analysis is carried out to grasp the effect of the tensile strength of retrofitting material on the structural behavior. As the retrofitted depth and length are increased, the tensile strength becomes more effective so these parameters should be considered to determine the retrofitted area. The analytical results show that failure strength is less than that of experimental results, but the stiffness is vice versa.

  • The main purpose of this study is to develop a sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method, which is a new technique for strengthening the existing concrete structures by mixing one of the carbon or glass chopped fibers and one of the epoxy or vinyl ester resins with high-speed compressed air in open air and randomly spraying the mixture onto the concrete surface. At present, the sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method using the epoxy resin has not been fully discussed. In order to investigate the material property of the sprayed FRP, this study carried out tensile tests of the material specimens, which were changed with the combinations of various variables including the length of chopped fiber and the mixture ratio of chopped fiber and resin. These variables were set to have the equal material strength, compared with that of one layer of the FRP sheet. As a result, the optimal length of glass and carbon chopped fibers was fumed out to be 38 mm, and the optimal mixture ratio between chopped fiber and resin was also turned out to be 1 : 2 from each variable. And also, the thickness of the sprayed FRP to have the equal strength to one layer of the FRP sheet was finally calculated. In is study, a series of experiments were carried out to evaluate the strengthening effects of flexural beams, shear beams and damaged beams strengthened with the sprayed FRP method, respectively. The results revealed that the strengthening effects of the flexural and shear specimens were reasonably similar to those of the FRP sheet, and the developed Sprayed FRP technique is able to be used as a strengthening scheme of existing RC building.

  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of V-shaped ties as an alternative to the supplementary crossties specified in ACI 318-14 on the flexural ductility of reinforced concrete columns. From column specimens tested under constant axial loads and reversed cyclic lateral loads, the mode of failure and lateral load-lateral displacement relationship were measured according to the variation of the applied axial load levels. After the columns reached the peak lateral load capacity, the $90^{\circ}$ hooks of the crossties gradually opened, which eventually caused premature buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement and severe crushing of the core concrete, whereas no V-ties were extracted from the core concrete until the column failure. As a result, the cumulative work damage indicators up to 80% of the peak lateral load for V-tie columns under the axial load level of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.55 was as much as 2.4, 2.3, and 5.2 times higher, respectively, than those of the companion crosstie columns. The superiority of the V-ties to the conventional crossties in enhancing the flexural ductility of columns became more prominent as the axial load level increases.
