Concrete is deformed by load and subjected to micro damage under allowable deformation because of non-homogeneous property. When micro damage is accumulated, it is cracked and finally fractured. Characterization of AE can be demonstrated the micro damage which it is not discovered from visual observation, and it become known to an advantage that was clearly discriminated from the existing NDT method. This study was carried out the analysis and evaluation of concrete damage by acoustic emission technique. As a results of damage analysis, it was found out that the more concrete strength has increased, the more concrete has subjected to micro damage at lower stress ratio for chylinder specimen, and this is possible only AE method which could be described the brittle properties. Also it was revealed that the kaiser effect and felicity effect were existed in reinforced concrete bending specimens and it is found out that the onset of interface debonding between concrete and steel could be conformed in comparison with felicity ratio, AE activity and load history. From the results of this study, it was conformed that the deteriorative degree of reinforced concrete structure should be evaluated using felicity ratios.

This study aimed to review the performance stability of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) fiber reinforcing materials among the synthetic fiber types for which the application of performance reinforcing materials to fiber-reinforced concrete is being reviewed by examining short-term and long-term performance changes. To this end, the residual performance was analyzed after exposing the PET fiber to an acid/alkali environment, and the flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength of the PET fiber-reinforced concrete mixture by age were analyzed, and the surface of the PET fiber collected from the concrete specimen was examined using a scanning microscope (SEM). The changes in were analyzed. As a result of the acid/alkali environment exposure test of PET fiber, the strength retention rate was 83.4~96.4% in acidic environment and 42.4~97.9% in alkaline environment. It was confirmed that the strength retention rate of the fiber itself significantly decreased when exposed to high-temperature strong alkali conditions, and the strength retention rate increased in the finished yarn coated with epoxy. In the test results of the flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength of the PET fiber-reinforced concrete mixture, no reduction in flexural strength was found, and the equivalent flexural strength result also did not show any degradation in performance as a fiber reinforcement. Even in the SEM analysis results, no surface damage or cross-sectional change of the PET reinforcing fibers was observed. These results mean that no damage or cross-section reduction of PET reinforcing fibers occurs in cement concrete environments even when fiber-reinforced concrete is exposed to high temperatures in the early stage or depending on age, and the strength of PET fibers decreases in cement concrete environments. The impact is judged to be of no concern. As the flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength according to age were also stably expressed, it could be seen that performance degradation due to hydrolysis, which is a concern due to the use of PET fiber reinforcing materials, did not occur, and it was confirmed that stable residual strength retention characteristics were exhibited.
The influence of tunnelling on buildings has become an important issue in urban areas. The problem is an interactive one: not only do tunnelling settlements affect existing structures, but existing structures affect tunnel-induced soil movements. In order to examine the constraint of surface settlement and the degradation of building damage parameters, 3-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses are peformed. Also, in this paper, the results of the parametric studies for the variations of the damage parameters due to the ground movements are presented by utilizing 2-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element models, totally 162 models. The width of a structure, its bending and axial stiffness, its position relative to the tunnel and the depth of tunnel are considered. The interaction is shown by reference to commonly-used building damage parameters, namely angular distortion, deflection ratio, maximum building settlements, maximum differential settlements and horizontal strain. By introducing relative stiffness parameters which combine the bending and axial stiffness of the structure with its width and stiffness of soil, design curves are established. These give a guide as to the likely modification of the greenfield settlement trough caused by a surface structure. They can be used to give initial estimates of likely building damage.

Required performance for repair materials are strength, ductility, durability and bonding with the substrate concrete. Various kinds of fiber-reinforced cement composites (FRCCs) have been developed and used as repair materials. Strain-hardening cement based composites (SHCC) is one of the effective repair materials that can be used to improve crack-damage tolerance of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. SHCC is a superior FRCC that has multiple cracking characteristic and pseudo strain-hardening behavior. The expansive admixture, which can be used to reduce shrinkage in SHCC materials with less workability by controlling interfacial bonding performance between SHCC and substrate concrete. For the application of SHCC as a repair material to RC structures, this study investigates the flexural performance of expansive SHCC-layered concrete beam. Test variables include the replacement levels of expansive admixture (0 and 10%), repair thickness (30 and 40 mm), and compressive strength of SHCC (30, 70 and 100 MPa). Four point bending tests on concrete beams strengthened with SHCCs were carried out to evaluate the contribution of SHCC on the flexural capacity. The result suggested that expansive SHCC materials can be used for repairing and strengthening of concrete infrastructures.

Due to the continuously increasing global demand for electricity, the demand for high-voltage submarine cables is also increasing. One of the issues that need to be addressed for submarine cables is the high production cost and expensive laying costs. Submarine cables exposed to the marine environment encounter external forces such as wave and current, leading to issues such as cable damage due to external factors or high maintenance costs in the event of an accident. Therefore, we are preparing for the uncertainty of the submarine environment through many protective materials and protective equipment. In this study, we examined the bending performance of piggyback clamps (PBC) and strap, which are representative protective equipment, in response to the submarine environment through analytical methods. To examine the structural performance of PBC, the bending performance were assessed under the maximum bending moment criterion of 15 kN·m for the flexible protection tube. As a result, it was confirmed that the structural performance regarding the bending moment of both PBC and straps was ensured.
A new Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) wavelength demodulation scheme is studied in the paper, which consists of an improved de-noising method and Gaussian fitting peak searching algorithm. The improved translational invariant wavelet without threshold adjust factor is proposed to get a better de-noising performance for FBG sensor signal and overcome the drawbacks of soft or hard threshold wavelets. In order to get a high wavelength demodulation precision of FBG sensor signal, this de-noising method is designed to combine with Gaussian fitting peak searching algorithm. The simulation results show that the wavelength maximum measurement error is lower than 1pm, and can get a much higher accuracy.

This paper presents an experimental study on flexural behavior of damaged RC beams repaired with epoxy mortar system. The main test variables are repair length and depth. A series of 7 specimens was tested to show the corresponding effect of each variables on maximum load capacity, load-deflection relationship, and failure mode. The results of this study shows that flexural behavior of repaired RC beams changes as the repair length and depth is getting longer and deeper, so that the tension strength of repairing materials should be considered in the courses of repair design.

In this study, we developed a repair material incorporating PVA powder resin and nylon fiber into cemented carbide used in the existing field to improve adhesion performance and water tightness with existing concrete. Flexural behavior evaluation was performed. The main experimental variables were PVA powder resin, nylon fiber mixing rate and damage type, and performance tests were conducted to evaluate compressive strength and flexural behavior after repairing materials. It was found that all formulations fully satisfied the required performance of the repair material. The flexural strength test results of the repaired tube specimens showed that the performance of the repaired materials was maximized when the nylon fiber was added and the PVA powder was added in an appropriate amount. The flexural behavior of all the specimens showed the flexural behavior of the structural members with a low rebar ratio, suggesting that the amount of iron wire in the domestic fume pipe was somewhat insufficient. That is, it was confirmed that the amount of reinforcement of the steel wire was somewhat small, so that the concrete was cracked before the behavior of the concrete and the steel wire reached the extreme state, and the concrete was immediately destroyed beyond the tensile strength of the concrete.
