  • In this study, flexural strength properties of concrete under biaxial stress state were experimentally investigated. Tests for size effect and fatigue behaviour of concrete under biaxial stress were carried out by the ASTM C 1550 and the biaxial flexure test(BFT). The results given by the biaxial tests were compared to those by the third-point bending test. Test results showed that biaxial flexural strengths obtained from the ASTM C 1550 and the biaxial flexure test are greater than the strength by the third-point bending test. As the size increases, the uniaxial and biaxial flexural strength decreases. However, the slope of the size effect of the biaxial strength was greater than that of the uniaxial strength. Finally, the fatigue response of concrete under the biaxial stress state was similar with that for uniaxial stress state.

  • In this paper, the flexural creep behavior of hooked-end steel fiber reinforced high-strength concrete was evaluated to investigate the steel fiber content influence on long-term behavior of flexural members. An experimental program consisted of nine prismatic beam specimens with dimensions of 150 × 150 × 600mm reinforced with different contents of steel fiber (0, 0.75 and 1.5% at the volume fraction). To introduce flexural creep loading to notched prismatic beam specimens, a four-point bending test setup was used. The sustained load with 40% of the flexural strength was applied by means of a lever system and controlled by a load cell for 90 days. During sustained loading, crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) was monitored. Conventional flexural test after creep tests were carried out to evaluate the residual capacity of each specimen. Test results showed that steel fiber content has a significant effect on the flexural creep behavior of high-strength concrete and long-term flexural load with 40% of flexural strength doesn't generate negative effects on the residual capacity of steel fiber reinforced high-strength concrete.

  • The quality for the domestic pavement is evaluated based on flexural strength at the age of 28 days in accordance with KS regulation. Most specimens of the flexural tensile strength used currently are relatively large ones with a dimension of $150{\times}150{\times}550mm$. Accordingly, it is difficult to treat the specimens, and the utilization of a curing tank is low. In this paper, the study tried to resolve the problem by specimen size specified in the code. For this purpose, a flexural strength test was conducted according to the log scale within the specimen size specified by the KS. And, based on the results of this experiment, a comparative analysis was conducted using the prediction formula of Size Effect Law (SEL) proposed by Bazant to examine the correlation between specimen sizes, so as to use the result as basic data for the reduction of the specimen size in the quality evaluation of concrete pavement.

  • In order to use glued built up timber beam as a structural member for post and beam construction, it must be possible to manufacture long-span lumber. In this study, the researchers conducted a performance evaluation for longitudinal bonding of lumber (cross-section $89{\times}120mm$) made from larch. The specimens were prepared in six different forms using the longitudinal bonding method. The bonding strength of these specimens was tested through tensile strength tests and bending strength tests. The tensile strength test result of the longitudinally bonded parts was better than that of the double lap specimens. And, the tensile strength value of the scarf specimen was better than that of the hooked scarf specimen. The tensile strength of the GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) rod insertion bonding specimen was 3.6 MPa, which was the highest. As for the bending strength test result of the longitudinally bonded part, the average MOR (modulus of rupture) of the specimen where a GFRP rod was inserted and bonded measured 29 MPa, while the specimens of other bonded parts showed a MOR no more than 11 MPa. Toughness destruction was observed in specimens where a GFRP rod was insertion-bonded. The rest of the specimens showed brittle destruction. The average MOR strength of the Rod + Lap specimen was 30.5 MPa, which was the highest among all longitudinally bonded specimens. The bending strength of the Rod + Lap specimens showed an effective strength that was 66% of that of the control group which were not longitudinally bonded.

  • This study was aimed to verify the validity of the flexural toughness evaluation method of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete(SFRS) currently being adopted by Korea Highway Corporation(KHC). Total 33 beam specimens using six different kinds of steel fiber products were prepared at tunnel construction sites and flexural toughness tests were executed at laboratory. Equivalent flexural strengths and toughness quotients were evaluated from the tests following the KHC guide iud these were compared with the quality grades determined under the guides proposed by ASTM, ITA and EFNARC. To discard the disadvantage that the toughness quotient could be influenced by flexural strength when following the KHC guide, a modification substituting the designed flexural strength for the flexural strength in the toughness quotient calculation formula was proposed to rate the quality of SFRS more adequately.

  • Concrete filled steel tube (PCFT) piles, which compose PHC piles inside thin steel pipes, were developed to increase the flexural strength of the pile with respect to the horizontal load. In order to compare the flexural strength of PCFT pile with that of steel pipe pile, several flexural tests were performed on the PCFT and steel pipe piles with the same diameter and the P-M curves for both piles were constructed by the limit state design method. Four test piles were also installed and lateral pile load tests were performed to compare the lateral load capacities and lateral behaviors of the hybrid composite piles using PCFT piles and the existing piles such as HCP and steel pipe piles. The flexural test results showed that the flexural strength of PCFT piles was 18.7% higher than that of steel pipe piles with thickness of 12mm and the same diameter, and the mid-span deflection of piles was 50% lower than that of steel pipe piles at the same bending moment. From the P-M curves, it can be seen that the flexural strength of PCFT piles subjected to the vertical load is greater than that of steel pipe piles, but the flexural strength of PCFT piles subjected to the pullout load is lower than that of steel pipe piles. In addition, field pile load tests showed that the PCFT hybrid composite pile has 60.5% greater lateral load capacity than the HCP and 35.8% greater lateral load capacity than the steel pipe pile when the length of the upper pile in hybrid composite piles was the same.

  • For the purpose of fire delineation within buildings, steel walls in Korea are mandated to undergo rigorous certification as fire-resistant entities, substantiated via a series of qualitative assessments. Predominantly, these evaluations comprise the fire resistance test paired with supplementary examinations; specifically for steel walls, these encompass the gas hazard and panel bending strength tests. Given the prevalence of semi-noncombustible core materials, gas hazard tests are largely rendered superfluous, pivoting the focus solely onto the panel bending strength test during the certification trajectory. This particular test is designed to gauge the flexural robustness of individual wall panels. An enhanced bending strength is postulated to fortify both the structural integrity and thermal insulation of the wall by mitigating potential deformations. In this scholarly exploration, an analytical deep dive was undertaken into extant, valid certification test datasets. The endeavor aimed to ascertain the depth of correlation between the designated fire resistance metric and the bending strength, the latter being the sole supplementary assessment for steel walls. In distilling the findings, it was discerned that temperature elevations beyond baseline values exhibited no statistically salient linkage with the panel's bending strength.

  • This paper presents experimental investigations about flexural strength and durability of reinforced concrete beams repaired using ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composite (DFRCC) and carbon fiber sheet through freezing and thawing test. Total 14 RC beams of $100{\times}100{\times}400mm$ size were tested by 3-point bending and freezing and thawing test by KS F 2456. The beams were reinforced using 3D10 steels on both the tensile and compressive sides, and repaired on 3 sides expect on top cycle. Test results showed that the beams repaired using fiber carbon sheet revealed about 15% higher values of flexural strength compared than the cases of DFRCC motar. On the other hand, the results did not showed meaningful differences in the aspect of durability. For further research, consideration of the steel interference effect and real old specimens such as taken from real deteriorated structures are needed to be tested after repairing with DFRCC and carbon fiber sheet.

  • This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the behavior of eight a third scale columns made of high-strength concrete(HSC). The columns were subjected to constant axial load corresponding to target value of 30 percent of the column axial load capacity and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement(Ps=1.58, 2.25 %), tie configuration(hoop-type, cross-type, diagonal-type) and tie yield strength(fy=5,600, 7,950 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$). Test results indicated that the flexural strength of all the columns did not exceed calculated flexural capacities based on the equivalent concrete stress block used in current design code. Columns with 42 percent higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-99 were shown ductile behavior. With axial load of 30 percent of the axial load capacity, the use of high-strength steel as transverse reinforcement may lead to equal or higher ductility than would be achieved with low-strength steel.
