The pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Nematoda: Parasitaphelenchidae) poses a serious threat to pine forests in Europe and East Asia, leading to a debilitating pine wilt disease. Infected pine trees in Korea are generally fumigated or crushed to small wood chips after felling. Although pine wilt disease often recurs in pest management sites, there are no adequate means to monitor the effectiveness of pest control measures in those sites. Recently, a male-produced aggregation pheromone, 2-(undecyloxy)ethanol, was shown to be useful for attracting several Monochamus species, which are vectors for the pinewood nematodes. In this study, we investigated the abilities of 2-(undecyloxy)ethanol at three different doses (175, 350, and 700 mg), as well as host plant volatiles (α-pinene and ethanol), to attract M. alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) at a pine forest in Pohang, Korea where infected pine trees had been cut down and fumigated. Twenty-seven M. alternatus were captured in cross-vane panel traps made of polyethylene terephthalate bottles and acrylic sheets. The results indicate that a high dose of 2-(undecyloxy)ethanol (700 mg per trap) is the most effective for attracting M. alternatus. The aggregation pheromone could be used to monitor the effectiveness of pest control measures as well as M. alternatus populations.

Background: Dazomet are widely used as soil fumigant to solve soilborne problems, and the degradation intermediates are toxic to nematodes, fungi, bacteria, insects and weeds. Methods and Results: The effects of cultivation of green manure crop, maize before and after soil fumigation on the control of ginseng root rot disease were compared using soil where 6-years-old ginseng was harvested. Fumigant (dazomet) were used for soil fumigation in May and September, respectively. Maize was grown for soil management before and after soil fumigation. After May fumigation, the sowing date of maize was delayed by 15 days and thus its dry weight was decreased significantly. Maize cultivation after May fumigation increased pH but decreased EC, $NO_3$, $P_2O_5$, and K significantly. Maize cultivation after May fumigation decreased fungi population and the ratio of fungi and bacteria. Growth of 2-years-old ginseng was improved and the incidence of ginseng root rot was significantly decreased by maize cultivation after May fumigation. After harvesting 2-years-old ginseng, the population of Cylindrocarpon destructans was not different between treatment of May and September, but Fusarium solani showed a significant increase in September fumigation after maize cultivation. Conclusions: Maize cultivation after soil fumigation was effective in inhibiting ginseng root rot by the amendment of mineral composition and microorganism in fumigated soil.
The microbial populations of exportable ginseng leaf tea were $3.6{\times}10^{5}/g$ in mesophilic aerobic bacteria, $2.1{\times}10^{3}/g$ in mesophilic aerobic spores, $1.6{\times}10^{4}/g$ in yeast, $1.9{\times}10^{4}/g$ in molds and $1.2{\times}10^{4}/g$ in coliforms, respectively, which are higher levels than the legaJIy permissible loads of microorganisms for ginseng powders in Korea. In a comparative study of the decontaminating effects on microorganisms, ethylene oxide fumigation and 5 kGy irradiation could decrease microorganisms below the detectable level. And there is no growth of microorgllnisms after three months of storage at $30{\pm}1^{circ}C$. The decimal reduction doses (Dw value) for microorganisms contaminated were 0.70 kGy in coliforms, 0.75 kGy in total bacteria, 0.85 kGy in molds. and 0.95 kGy in yeast, respectively. In the organoleptic test for ginseng leaf tea, the irradiated samples showed no significant difference from the control group in overall flavor, taste, color and acceptability. However the extracts of ethylene oxide fumigated sample were significantly different in color and taste from other groups even after three months storage.
The usual sterilization methods such as fumigation and autoclaving of laboratory rodent diet was compared with a new irradiation treatment in the point of sterilization effect and physico-chemical quality. Under the treatments of $10{\sim}20\;kGy$${\gamma}-irradiation$ and autoclaving at $121^{\circ}C$ for 20 min, total microorganisms were eliminated but ethylene oxide fumigation was insufficient to destory them. Total amino acid content was reduced about 5% in 20 kGy radiation treatment compared with control, while in the ethylene oxide fumigation and the autoclaving, the reducing rate was markedly great as 15% and 20%, respectively. Total sugar and mineral contents were not significantly different among treatment among treatment groups. TBA values were increased in all treatments. The pH of irradiated group war stable in comparison with that of ethylene oxide. In the treatments of ethylene oxide and especially autoclaving, overall appearance was decreased to a great extent as a result of decreasing lightness and increasing redness.

Comparative effects of gamma irradiation and ethylene oxide treatments on the sterilization and physicochemical propperties of the condiment for soup of instant noodle (ramen) were investigated. The number of microorganisms contaminated ranged from $10^3\;to\;10^7\;CFU/g$ in total bacterial count, which were mainly composed of thermophiles and acid tolerant bacteria by over 90%. The yeast & molds were contaminated by $10^2\;to\;10^3\;CFU/g$. In the sterilizing effect of an irradiation on the microorganisms contaminated, 7 to 10 kGy gamma irradiation could eliminated yeast & molds, and also bring about the reduction of total bacterial count to below $10^3\;CFU/g.\;D_{10}$values of total bacteria! count of the samples ranged from 2.33 to 3.33 kGy. In comparative effects of irradiation and ethylene oxide treatments on the physicochemical properties of the sample, both treatments affected more or less rancidity, color, and amino-Ncontent, but less than 10 kGy irradiation was shown to be safe than ethylene oxide.

Objective: Methyl bromide (MB) fumigant has been shown to be fatal to human when was exposed. However, it were still used the significant amount in quarantine disinfection sites. The purposes of this study were to assess the MB exposure status and characteristics by fumigation-related workers and to provide supporting data for management plan. Methods: For this study, the three groups related to fumigation work were composed. A total of 107 workers were directly exposed, 20 field inspectors were indirect, and 20 general quarantines were not exposed. The urinary bromide ion concentrations in each group were analyzed by using HPLC/ICP-MS, and the working characteristics were identified using the structured questionnaire. Results: The urinary bromide ion concentration in the exposed group of fumigation workers was higher than the indirect and non-exposed groups. In the work characteristics of workers, there was a significant tendency to increase urinary bromide ion concentrations with higher fumigation work years (≤4 years: 2.84 (1.13-7.11) mg/g cr, >4-15 years: 5.36 (4.37-6.57) mg/g cr, >15-37 years: 6.69 (5.27-8.49) mg/g cr, p=0.034). In the comparison of the average number of working days per month, the more working days, the higher the urinary bromide ion concentration was statistically significant (≤12.5 days: 2.59 (1.19-5.65) mg/g cr, >12.5-19.25 days: 5.46 (4.62-6.44) mg/g cr, >19.25-27.25 days: 7.93 (5.93-10.59) mg/g cr, p=0.002). Conclusion: This study was the first nationwide survey including biological monitoring in workers exposed to methyl bromide. The results of this study were expected to be used as a reference for workers' health rights in relation to fumigation, prevention of addiction accidents, and safe management plan.

Objectives: This study evaluated the fungicidal efficacy of a fumigant containing 20% ortho-phenylphenol against Trichophytone mentagrophytes (T. mentagrophytes), Candida albicans (C. albicans) and Aspergillus niger (A. niger). Methods: Five replicates of each carrier were contaminated by depositing 0.05 mL of each fungal suspension. After drying, two carriers without exposure to the fumigant and three carriers with exposure to the fumigant were left in a sealed room ($25m^3$) at $21{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and $60{\pm}10%$ relative humidity for 15 hours. Immediately after removal from the test room, each carrier was transferred into recovery diluent and suspended, diluted and inoculated. After incubation, the numbers of each colony were counted, and the parameter values (N, T, d) were calculated. Results: The working culture suspension number (N value) of T. mentagrophytes, C. albicans and A. niger were $1.0{\times}10^8$, $1.2{\times}10^8$ and $5.7{\times}10^7CFU/mL$, respectively. All the colony numbers on the carriers exposed to the fumigant (n1, n2, n3) were higher than 0.5N1 (the number of fungal test suspensions by pour plate method), 0.5N2 (the number of fungal test suspensions by filter membrane method) and 0.5N1, respectively. In addition, all mean numbers of test strains recovered on the control-carriers (T value) were over $10^6CFU/mL$. For the fungicidal effect of the fumigant, all numbers of fungal reductions after exposure of the fumigant (d value) were 4 logCFU/mL. Conclusions: The present study showed that fumigant containing 20% ortho-phenylphenol has effective fungicidal activity against T. mentagrophytes, C. albicans and A. niger.

This study identified material properties through scientific analysis on Jikgeumdan(satin with gold threads) from Donggungbi-Wonsam and the gold threads used in the embroidery. The Donggungbi-Wonsam's base of gold threads were estimated to have used mulberry fiber's Korean paper(Hanji) because non-wood-based fibers were observed. The X-ray spectrometer showed that the Tongsuseulan of Donggungbi-Wonsam was a flat gold thread of pure gold and Jikgeumdan of flat silver thread of its Saekdong and Hansam. High sulfur levels were detected in the flat silver thread, which appeared to have formed silver sulfide by either manufacturing process using sulfur or conservation environment. he dragon insignia's embroidery is also described as two types twisted gold threads; pure gold and alloying-gold and silver. while dragon insignia's border line is decorated with a twisted gold thread of pure gold. In particular, it was investigated that adhesives such as an animal glue, a protein-based compound by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Additionally, XRF and Raman spectroscopy analysis on the mixture substances between the metal surface and the base paper of gold threads identified talc and quartz in the gold threads and Seokganju(hematite) in the flat silver threads.

Among the various evidence found in maritime crimes, fingerprints and DNA are very important in that they can identify a suspect. In this study, 5 types of non-porous surfaces (plastic, stainless, glass, ceramic, FRP), which are often found as evidence in the actual marine environment, were selected, and latent and blood fingerprints were passed down and immersed at the Donghae Maritime Police Station's exclusive pier for about 7 days. After that, DNA extraction, quantification, and STR profile were analyzed after fingerprint developing CA fumming method and 4 powder methods (Swedish black powder, Concentrated black powder, Supranano red powder, Dazzle orange powder). Among the fingerprint developing methods, when Supranano red powder was applied, a relatively high amount of DNA was found. As a result of STR profile analysis, an average of 16.8 to 9 loci were secured, and all 20 were confirmed in glass and ceramic materials. As a result of the study, it was possible to secure the STR profile by extracting and quantifying DNA after applying the fingerprint developing method to virtual evidence immersed for about 7 days, and further research is needed to secure the STR profile by analyzing DNA after applying various fingerprint developing methods such as VMD and SPR.
On living skin the chances of a successfully developing latent fingerprint are very limited. This is due to the fact that continual perspiration and rapid absorption diffuse into the lipophillic layer on skin. A study was conducted to investigate effectively developing method of latent fingerprints on human skin surfaces and pig skin likely corpse's skin. We used commercial fingerprint powder, black powders, black magnetic powder, fluorescence magnetic powder, Cyanoacrylate fuming (CA) and direct lifting methods (lifting paper, glasses and photo glossy paper). Developing of fresh fingerprints on living skin was achieved with S-powderblack, CA fuming and CA fuming following S-powder, fluorescence powder. The other powder tends to overwhelm the latent print and the background. But, latent fingerprint residue was disappeared with time after deposit on a living surface. In case of pig skin likely corpse's skin, latent fingerprint detection was achieved with CA fuming following S-powder and deposited print during 6 hr at $25^{\circ}C$, 40% relative moisture yielded excellent fingerprints with clear ridge details using 1 min CA fuming. And enhancement of fingerprint detection image using forensic light source was achieved.
