  • Orthogonally stiffened steel plates are used for orthotropic steel decks of long-span bridges because of high degree of flexural and torsional resistances and good load-distribution behavior. An analytic study is presented for evaluating the buckling strength of orthogonally stiffened plates subjected to uniaxial compression. By using the plate theory, the buckling stress under overall and partial buckling modes, is derived. Parametric studies are performed to show the effects of the stiffness and the number of transverse and longitudinal ribs on the buckling strength. The results show quantitatively strong influence of stiffness and spacing of longitudinal and transverse ribs.

  • Applying a general coupled lateral and torsional vibration finite element model of gear pair element, this paper intends to look into in detail the coupled lateral and torsional vibration characteristics of a turbo-chiller rotor bearing system, having a bull-pinion speed increasing gear. Investigations have been carried out systematically by comparing the uncoupled and coupled natural frequencies and their mode shapes upon varying the gear mesh stiffness with considerations on rotating speeds, and also by comparing the strain energies of lateral and torsional vibration modes. Results hale shown that some modes may hale the coupled lateral and torsional mode characteristics as the gear mesh stiffness Increases over a certain value, and moreover that their associated dominant modes may be different from their initial modes, j.e., a certain dominant mode may change from an initial torsional one to a lateral one or from an initial lateral one to a torsional one.

  • Reduction of a ship's rolling is the most important performance requirement for improving the safety of the crew on board and preventing damage to cargos as well as improving the comfort of the ride. A mass driving anti-rolling system (MO-ARS) might be one candidate of several systems against the ship's rolling. As the movable range of the mass on the ship is finite, the control system must include restriction on the mass position to protect the device and the ship. This restriction usually causes windup phenomenon and control performance is deteriorated seriously. Two control algorithms, anti-windup control and saturated sliding mode control, are studied in this paper. Control performance and robustness problem are checked out by numerical simulations.

  • A novel fiber optic sensor is demonstrated using a FBG in PM(Polarization-Maintaining) fiber. Gratings have been written in a Bow-Tie type fiber using the phase mask. The operation of the sensor simply involves monitoring back-reflected Bragg wavelengths from the grating. Since PM fiber has two principal semi-axes with two indices of refraction, two Bragg wavelengths were observed. We have observed the position of Bragg wavelengths for PM FBG shifted simultaneously by either applying the longitudinal strain or temperature change. The wavelength sensitivity of 1.2pm/$\mu$$\varepsilon$ about a longitudinal strain and the wavelength sensitivity of 11.4pm/$^{\circ}C$ about a temperature have been experimentally achieved. The wavelength sensitivity of both longitudinal strain and temperature are approximately same with the reported values for the single mode FBG. On the other hand, the change of separation between Bragg wavelengths was observed by the applying transverse stress. We observed that the separation between two Bragg wavelengths is proportional to the applied transverse stress. The wavelength sensitivity of 14.6 pm/N about a transverse stress has been achieved. We have demonstrated PM FBG sensors can measure the transverse stress independently from the effects of temperature.

  • In general, RC flat plate frames have been used as a gravity load resisting system(GLRS) in building. This system should be constructed with lateral force resisting system(LFRS) such as shear walls and brace frames. When lateral loads such as earthquakes occur, LFRS undergo displacement by which connected gravity systems experience lateral displacement. Thus, flat plate system designed as GLRS should be predict unbalanced moments and punching failure due to lateral deformation. This study developed an analytical mode for predicting nonlinear behavior of RC slab column connection for the seismic performance evaluation of RC flat plate frames. For verifying the analytical model, the test results of two flat plate specimens having two continous spans with the difference gravity shear ratio($V_g/{\phi}V_c$) were compared with the results of analysis. The developed model can predict the failure modes and punching failures.

  • Recent earthquakes have demonstrated that the tunnels, which were once considered to be highly resistant to earthquakes, are susceptible to substantial damage under severe seismic loading. Among various modes of deformation under an earthquake loading, the response of the tunnel in the transverse direction is known to be the critical mode. This paper investigates the seismic response of the tunnel in the transverse direction using the method of seismic displacement, which is a type of pseudo-static analysis. Firstly, the methods of calculating the ground deformation are compared. It is shown that the single and double cosine may not provide an accurate estimation of the ground deformation, and that a one-dimensional site response analysis needs to be performed for a more reliable evaluation. Secondly, the tunnel responses are calculated using the simplified, analytical, and numerical solutions. It is demonstrated that the simplified method provides poor estimates of the tunnel response ground deformation. The analytical solution is shown to be effective in modeling circular tunnels in uniform ground, but has serious limitation in modeling tunnel response in non-uniform ground. Numerical analyses are shown to be applicable to all cases, and give the most accurate estimates of the tunnel response. It is also demonstrated that the linear solutions can be so conservative that the soil nonlinearity needs to be accounted for more accurate evaluation of the tunnel response.

  • Recently, many high-rise reinforced concrete(RC) bearing-wall structures of multiple uses have been constructed, which have the irregularities of weak(or soft) story and torsion at the lower stories simultaneously. The study stated herein was performed to investigate seismic performance of such a high-rise RC structure through a series of shaking table tests of a 1: 12 model. Based on the observations of the test results, the conclusions are drawn as follows: 1) Accidental torsion due to the uncertainty on the properties of structure can be reasonably predicted by using the dynamic analysis than by using lateral force procedure. 2) The mode coupled by translation and torsion induced the overturning moments not only in the direction of excitations but also in the perpendicular direction: The axial forces in columns due to this transverse overturning moment cannot be adequately predicted using the existing mode analysis technique, and 3) the hysteretic curve and the strength diagram between base shear and torque(BST) clearly reveal the predominant mode of vibrations and the failure mode.

  • In this paper, the ultraprecision positioning control of an ultrasonic linear motor in a high-vacuum environment is presented. The bolt-clamped Langivin type transducer (BLT) with the 3rd longitudinal; and 6th lateral vibration modes was developed, which was excited by using the Eigen resonance frequency for two vibration modes in order to generate stable and high power. In practical applications, however, even if a geometrical design has an Eigen frequency, discordance between both mode frequencies can be generated by the contact mechanism and because of manufacturing errors as well as environmental factors. Both mode frequencies were precisely matched by adjusting the impedence. By using this method, the BLT can be driven under any environmental conditions. The nominal characteristic trajectory following(NCTF) control method was adopted to control the positioning of the system in vacuum. The developed linear motor stage show high positioning accuracy with 5 nm.

  • A procedure for determining the lateral load pattern for pushover analysis which includes higher mode effects is presented in this study. It is well-known that the details of future earthquakes at particular site is almost impossible to predict accurately and that the code-design spectra try to represent at least the average nature of probable future earthquakes. Thus the code-design spectrum is directly used as the input earthquakes in this paper when incorporating higher mode effects in the pushover analysis so that the efforts for selecting input motions and constructing response spectrum needed in some existing method could be avoided. A case study based on the time history analysis of a irregular steel moment frame showed that the procedure proposed in this study generally outperforms various pushover analysis procedures of ATC-40 and FEMA 273. However, the proposed procedure tended to be conservative as compared with the time history analysis method.

  • In this paper, Authors develop and verify the algorithm for enhancing the performance of Unmanned vehicle's Autonomous navigation, and also propose the method of establishing much more precise Navigation locus. Unmanned vehicle has a destination, however orientation is not notified, which make it find the future orientation itself. Extended Kalman Filter make it access to the desirable direction, which coupled with INS and GPS is proposed in this paper. Sliding mode control could overcome the side slip and lateral minor movement of the vehicle. The test result would shows the effectiveness of Extended kalman filter and Slide mode control for the navigation.
