  • Satisfying the large car impact condition of the high level SB5-B for "SMART Highway" longitudinal barriers, the possibility of increase of the small car impact velocity from 120km/h to 130km/h was investigated. Through computer simulation using input parameters calibrated to full-scale crash test results, various longitudinal semi-rigid barrier models were improved such that for the small car impact speed of 120km/h the change of longitudinal and transverse velocities of the impact vehicle can satisfy the THIV limit. The barrier model determined through this process satisfied the performance assessment criteria for SB5-B impact conditions. Varying the wing angle of slip block-outs of the passed barrier model, the possibility of increase of the small car impact velocity was investigated by FEA and a full-scale crash test was conducted. It has been shown that the possibility to increase the small car impact speed to 130km/h is high if the test facility condition for 130km/h impact velocity is better equipped.

  • Dynamic response of structures can be evaluated experimentally by conducting cyclic loading tests. It has been known that steel materials are rate-dependent and the lateral response of a structure is significantly affected by the presence of axial force. However, the rate-dependency of steel column structures subjected to both axial and lateral loads has not been sufficiently studied yet due to the difficulty of controlling the axial force in a real-time manner during test. This study introduces an advanced way to apply the axial load in real-time to a column specimen using the adaptive time series (ATS) compensator and the flexible loading beam (FLB), where the H-shape steel columns made of SS275 are used for monotonic and cyclic loading tests with various loading rates with axial loads. The lateral strength and post-yield response of the steel columns are compared for each of monotonic and cyclic loading tests. The estimating equation of yield stress of various strain rate has proposed and finite element analysis were performed for comparison.

  • In order to investigate the hydrodynamic interaction between the tug-barge and bank or ship which is crossing to the opposite direction, the towing simulations of tug-barge transportation were performed. Heading of barge, yaw moment and lateral force of tug boat were obtained by this simulation. The characteristics of results were analyzed and the safety towing method for tug-barge operation was proposed. In order to reduce the slewing motion of barge for safe towing operation, the speed of tug boat should be kept slow ahead state with shortened towing line as length of barge within the limits of the possible.

  • In accurate prediction of cross-flow based on detailed knowledge of the velocity field in subchannels of a nuclear fuel assembly is of importance in nuclear fuel performance analysis. In this study, the low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model has been adopted in too adjacent subchannels with cross-flow. The secondary flow is accurately estimated by the anisotropic algebraic Reynolds stress model. This model was numerically calculated by the finite element method and has been verified successfully through comparison with existing experimental data. Finally, with the numerical analysis of the velocity Held in such subchannel domain, an analytical correlation of the lateral loss coefficient is obtained to predict the cross-flow rate in subchannel analysis codes. The correlation is expressed as a function of the ratio of the lateral How velocity to the donor subchannel axial velocity, recipient channel Reynolds number and pitch-to-diameter.

  • In this paper, landing stability evaluation of lunar lander considering various landing conditions was performed. The status of landing stability of the lunar lander is classified into stable landing, conditionally stable landing due to sliding and unstable landing due to tip-over. In particular, the quasi-static tip-over equation was rearranged considering the phenomena of lowering the center of gravity and extension of foot-pad interval of the landing gear. These results were compared by finite element model analysis results using a commercial software ABAQUS and its validity and accuracy were verified. The verified finite element model was used for examining the tendency of various environmental variables such as landing conditions, friction coefficient, lateral speed and slope of ground.

  • In the present study, crack initiation criteria, static failure and tensile mode fatigue behavior for a rail steel are evaluated to assure the railway vehicle's safety. The transverse fissure, which is the most critical damage in the rail, is initiated by the maximum shear stress and its location is subsurface. In addition, the possibility of transition from the shear mode to the mixed mode increases with increasing the length of subsurface crack. Because of the brittleness by the welding, the fracture toughness of the welded part is lower than of the base metal. For low ${\Delta}K$, the stage II fatigue crack growth rates of the welded part is slower than of the base metal but, for high ${\Delta}K$, this different behavior for fatigue crack growth rate is nearly diminished. These trends are more remarkable for low stress ratio, R=0.1. It is believed that this behavior is caused by the change of the microstructure which that of the welded part is coarser than of base metal.

  • In order to complete missions in a complicated terrain or highly dangerous area, an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) needs a fine controller to precisely follow the desired path. A PID controller used for the path following feeds forward path curvature information to the control input to improve the path following performance. High gain for PID controller is necessary to follow path tightly. However the high gain could cause instability or performance degradation when the vehicle has slow dynamics. We present PID controller design method which considers response delay of vehicle as well as path curvature. In order to obtain path curvature the desired path is described as a 3rd order polynomial by applying cubic spline interpolation. We apply the proposed controller to the path following of a UAV which is operated in high altitude and has very slow lateral dynamics. The lateral dynamics are modelled as a first order delayed system in the controller design. Nonlinear simulation shows the UAV with proposed controller follows an arbitrary path very tightly.

  • Achieving consistent geometric design is an important goal in highway design to ensure obtaining safe, economical and smooth traffic operation. Most evaluation of consistency is based on 'speed change' in speed profile. According to literature, the speed depends on geometric elements, speed on tangent section prior to a curve, and background around roads. Especially, the radius is the most main element mentioned in various literature. Therefore, this paper shows two ways of calculating horizontal radius on real road, that is, three-dimensional road. First of all, the radius of horizontal curve is calculated based on physical method. The calculated radius contains not only superelevation but also longitudinal grade while the current minimum radius is calculated by considering superelevation and side friction according to the point-mass equation. Secondly, the problem of composed curves with distorted appearance by overlaying sag or crest vertical alignment has been known. To quantify the extent of distortion effects, the method of calculation of real seen so called 'Perspective Radius' is developed. The paper presents the perspective radius and recommended perspective radius.
