Numerical Investigation of Forward Flight Characteristics of Multi-Ducted Fan (다중 덕트 팬 전진 비행 특성에 대한 수치적 연구)

  • Increasing cruise speed is an important issue for the development of the next generation rotorcraft. Among several concepts proposed by previous research, the rotorcraft with ducted fan demonstrates its possibility of high-speed flight. In this study, numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the aerodynamic and flow characteristics of multi-ducted fan in forward flight. The aerodynamic efficiency around front ducted fan is determined by interaction between free-stream velocity and the induced velocity. While flow characteristics of rear ducted fan are dominantly influenced by the front ducted fan. Separation in the front ducted fan occurs faster than that of rear ducted fan, and the separation at duct inlet induces an increase of fan thrust. As a result of interaction effect between each ducted fan, relatively aligned inflow enters to the rear ducted fan. Therefore, thrust of the rear fan is decreased steadily before separation, and sudden changes of thrust in fans occur simultaneously. Due to the pressure decrease on lower surface, the normal force of rotorcraft is reduced with forward speed.

An Experimental Study for Efficient Design Parameters of a Wind Power Tower (풍력타워의 효율적인 설계변수에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Wind power tower (WPT) has been used to augment the performance of vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). However, the performance of the WPT depends on several design parameters, such as inner and outer radius, or number of guide walls. Therefore, an experimental study was conducted to investigate efficient design parameters on the WPT. A wind tunnel was utilized and its test section dimension was 2m height and 2.2m width. One story model of the WPT was manufactured with seven guide walls and a VAWT was installed within the WPT. Three different sizes of guide walls were applied to test with various design parameters. The power coefficients were measured along the azimuthal direction in a state of equal inlet velocity in order to compare its performance relatively. The experimental results showed that the gap between the inner radius of the WPT and the rotating radius of the VAWT was a major parameter to improve the performance of VAWT within the WPT.

  • An actuator mixer design using convex optimization technique situation where the propulsion system of an electric VTOL UAV during vertical take-off and landing maneuvers is proposed. The attainable control set to analyze the impact from failure of each motor and propeller can be calculated and illustrated using the properties of the convex function. The control allocation can be defined as a convex function optimization problem to obtain an optimal solution in real time. The mixer is implemented using a convex optimization solver, and the performance of the control allocation methods is compared to the attainable control set. Finally, the proposed mixer is compared with other techniques with nonlinear sux degree-of-freedom simulation.

A Study on the Uncertainty Propagation of Measured Parameters on the Turbine Performance Test (터빈성능시험에서 측정변수의 불확도 파급에 관한 연구)

  • The effect of uncertainties caused by measured parameters, which are propagated to the uncertainty of total-to-total efficiency, are analyzed from a turbine performance test. The degree of reaction is 0.373 at the mean radius on a tested 3-D axial type turbine, and the performance test is conducted at the low pressure and cold temperature status. The uncertainty of turbine inlet and exit total pressure shows the strong propagation effect to the uncertainty of total-to-total efficiency. This means that a high precision pressure measuring system is required to reduce the uncertainty propagated by the pressure. In the uncertainty portion of each measured parameters to the uncertainty of total- to-total efficiency, the uncertainty by torque is the highest and the uncertainty by RPM is the lowest. In case of the total pressure, the effect of the uncertainty by torque is increased with the increasing RPM. The uncertainty of total pressure at the turbine exit is more important than that at the turbine exit.

Dynamic Aeroelastic Characteristics of an All-Movable Canard with Oscillating Flap Used in UAV (플랩이 있는 무인기 전운동 카나드의 동적공탄성 특성)

  • In this study, dynamic aeroelastic analyses of the canard with oscillating flap are conducted considering the effect of aerodynamic compressibility. The canard model considered herein is an all-movable type with a pitching axis on a canard-rotor-wing aircraft which was considered as one of the major UAV candidates under developing in Korea. The equivalent structural model is constructed based on the initial design data by the Korea smart UAV development center. Both the frequency and the time-domain aeroelastic analyses have been applied to practically conduct parametric studies on the effects of equivalent torsional stiffness. In the case of all-movable control surface with oscillating flap, the equivalent rotational stiffness of the pitch axes are important design parameters. The parametric results for the aeroelastic instability are practically presented.

An Experimental Study of the Performance Characteristics on a Multi-Stage Micro Turbine with Various Stages (다단 마이크로터빈에서 단수 변화에 따른 터빈의 성능에 관한 실험적연구)

  • An experimental study on an axial-type micro turbine which consists of maximum 6 stages is conducted to measure aerodynamic characteristics on each stage. This turbine has a 2.0 flow coefficient, 3.25 loading coefficient and 25.8mm mean diameter. The solidity of stators and rotors is within a 0.67~0.75, and the off-design performance is measured by changing the load after adjusting the mass flowrate and the total pressure to constant at inlet. A maximum specific output power of 2kW/kg/sec is obtained in one stage, but the increment of the specific output power with increasing stages is alleviated. In case of torque, the increment of the torque maintains to constant at low RPM region, but its increment become dull at high RPM region. The efficiency of the micro turbine becomes low because the tip gap effect is great due to the small blade, but it could be improved by increasing the stages.

  • Prediction methods for a rotor averaged inflow in forward flight are investigated in this study. The investigated methods are Drees linear inflow model, Mangler & Squire model and free vortex wake(FVW) method. Predictions have been performed for a four-blade rotor operating at three different advance ratios i.e. 0.15, 0.23 and 0.30, at which experimental data are available. According to results, Drees model has a limitation for the inflow non-uniformity prediction due to an inherent linear characteristics. Mangler & Squire model has a reasonable accuracy except the disk edge region. KARI FVW method has very good accuracy and has better accuracy than the other FVW method especially in inboard region. However, there are some discrepancies in retreating side due to the dynamic stall effect and in near hub region due to the fuselage upwash effect.

  • This paper deals with an autonomous flight controller design problem for a tilt-rotor aircraft in rotary-wing mode. The inner-loop algorithm is designed using the output-based approximate feedback linearization. The model error originated from the feedback linearization is cancelled within allowable tolerance by using single-hidden-layer neural network. According to Lyapunov direct stability theory, the adaptive update law is derived to run the neural network on-line, which is based on the linear observer dynamics. Moreover, the outer-loop algorithm is designed to track the trajectory generated from way-point guidance. Especially, heading and flight-path angle line-of-sight guidance are applied to the outer-loop to improve accuracy of the landing tracking performance. The 6-DOF nonlinear simulation shows that the overall performance of the flight control algorithm is satisfactory even though the collective input response shows instantaneous actuator saturation for a short time due to the lack of the neural network and the saturation protection logic in that loop.

  • In this study, scale-down design of full-scale Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) main rotor blade has been investigated. The scaled model system were designed for the measurement of aerodynamic performance, tip vortex and noise source. For the purpose of considering the same aerodynamic loads, the Mach-scale method has been applied. The Mach-scaled model has the same tip Mach number, and it also has the same normalized frequencies. That is, the Mach-scaled model is analogous to full-scale model in the view point of aerodynamics and structural dynamics. Aerodynamic scale-down process could be completed just by adjusting scaling dimensions and increasing rotating speed. In the field of structural dynamics, design process could be finished by confirming the rotating frequencies of the designed blade with the stiffness and inertial properties distributions produced by sectional design. In this study, small-scaled blade sectional design were performed by applying domestic composite prepregs and structural dynamic characteristics of designed model has been investigated.

Performance Characteristics of a Partially Admitted Small Mixed-Type Turbine (부분분사에서 작동하는 소형 사류형 터빈에서의 성능특성에 관한 연구)

  • A mixed-type turbine was adopted and the rotor outer diameter was 108 mm. Turbine rotors were designed to the axial-type blade because the turbine operated at a low partial admission rate of 1.7-2.0% with two stages. Performance characteristics were studied when the spouting from the nozzle was toward radially inward or outward direction. Additionally, the effect at each stage of the rotor was measured. For comparing with each turbine performance, properties were measured based on various rotational speeds. Measured net specific torque was used to compare with the turbine system performance. On the mixed-type turbine, better performance was obtained when the operating air spouted toward radially inward direction. The specific torque was increased by 7.8% from using the second stage although its effect depended on the rotational speed.
