Performance improvement of helical piles in static load tests using hexagon joints that do not require welding or bolting was investigated. Two sites were selected for pile field tests to evaluate their bearing capacity. Static and pull-out load tests were undertaken to assess the method for estimating bearing capacity. The field tests indicated that the bearing capacity of the gravity grout pile was ≥600 kN in the static load test, consistent with the AC 358 Code. The non-grout pile had a bearing capacity of ≤600 kN, suggesting that gravity grouting is required. Field pile load-test results were used to establish the bearing capacity equation, based on a small number of helical pile.
The rotate penetration pile is a type of displacement pile: the surrounding soil is displaced when installing the pile, and the pile can exert a large bearing power and pullout force. In addition, it uses displaced soil method that does not generate slime, and its applications are increasing in foreign countries owing to the environmentally friendly characteristics such as small noise and vibration. However, mostly driven piles-which are directly driven to the ground, and bored pile- pre-fabricated piles are buried to prebored underground, are used; however, rotate penetration piles still have limited use. Most of the laboratory tests have been carried out until now to identify the support behavior after installation of piles and ground construction, the evaluating the support behavior is lacking due to the rotation intrusive process of the rotate penetration piles. Therefore, this study used indoor experiments simulating rotation intrusive process in weathered soil, to evaluate the bearing power behavior for the weathered soil, varying the diameter of the helical bearing plates, helical bearing plate spacing, number of the helical bearing plates, and helical bearing plate specifications. As the outcome of this study, the helical pile bearing power evaluation results, change in bearing power in accordance with main specifications, and review on the comparative analysis with the existing theories were provided.
Noise and vibration due to pile driving cause residents nearby construction sites to file civil complaints and to the extent of bringing construction to a halt. To deal with this issue, construction engineers have worked strenuously to develop several types of low noise & low vibration pile methods. In this study, a new noise and vibration-free precast screw pile method proposed as a low noise & low vibration pile. It penetrates into the ground by rotating and pressing to avert noise and vibration while maximizing bearing capacity. A prototype of noise and vibration-free precast screw pile method was manufactured, which is not seen anywhere in Korea and elsewhere, and have undergone pilot tests twice to determine construction method. Based on this study, features of the noise & vibration-free screw pile method, production of screw concrete pile prototype, two pilot tests and subsequent construction method were determined.
This study used the discrete element method (DEM) to model the driving process of open-ended piles and investigate the behavior of soil plug during pile penetration. The developed DEM model was verified by comparing model pile test results and numerical analysis, particularly using a contact model considering rolling resistance between soil particles. The study successfully simulated soil compression inside the pile by adjusting the relative density and penetration velocity, and it was confirmed that the soil plug tended to be more compressed as the initial penetration velocity decreased. Soil plug length measurements, plug length ratio, and incremental filling ratio were analyzed and validated against experimental results. The developed DEM model aims to reduce trial and error in further studies by detailing the modeling and verification process.
This research has focused on comparing the capacity predicted by the theoretical formula with the one measured by field load tests to examine characteristics of the bearing capacity of a helical pile. The helical pile is featured by a central shaft with one or more helical-shaped bearing plates. Being established by a small rotary attached to an excavator that applies toque, the helical piles can be readily constructed at narrow sites, especially in an urban area with relatively less noise than the others requiring driving and excavation. Although many cases of the helical pile constructions can be recently found, the bearing capacity of the pile has been limitedly studied. To this end, this contribution analyzes and presents comprehensive results of the ten field loading tests with an application of different parameters depending on joint condition and specification of the helical piles, and types of tests and grouting.

Three-dimensional FEM numerical analysis was performed to understand the behaviors of blocks and piles according to the horizontal load for the block breakwater combined with piles. The Modified Mohr-Coulomb model, the improved version of the Mohr-Coulomb model, was applied for the ground modeling. The cases when the pile is embedded only into the block, embedded to the riprap layer (H = 4.29 cm), and embedded to the ground down to 2H, 3H, and 4H were examined. The results of the laboratory model experiment and the numerical analysis showed similar horizontal resistance force-displacement behaviors. The pile showed rotational behavior up to the embedment depth of 1H~2H and bending behavior in the case of 3H~4H depth embedment. When the embedment depth of the pile is 3H or more, the pile shows a bending behavior, so it can be considered that the pile contributes significantly to the horizontal resistance of the block breakwater. The results of this study will be used for various numerical analyses for real-size structure design.
Ground drilling is a common method to conduct site investigation, soil improvement, and pile installation. In the point of construction ground drilling requires electrical energy to drill a hole in ground in which the energy exerts into the motor located on the head of auger and generates rotational power. In this paper it is verified that the exerted electrical energy is closely related to the strength characteristics of ground. Measurement sensors, recording system, and drilling system were developed to obtain exerted motor current and drilling depth and laboratory soil box tests were carried out. The measured motor current and boring depth were applied to predict SPT N-value and the prediction results were compared to SPT N-value of laboratory tests. The test results show that the exerted electrical energy to bore ground be a good index to estimate SPT N-value.
The helical pile is a manufactured steel pile consisting of one or more helix-shaped bearing plates affixed to a central shaft. This pile is installed by rotating the shaft into the ground to support structural loads. The advantages of helical piles are no need for boring or grout process, and ability to install with relatively light devices. The bearing capacity of the helical pile is exerted by integrating the bearing capacity of each helix plate attached to the steel shaft. In this paper, to estimate the bearing capacity of moderate-size helical piles, 6 types of helical piles were constructed with different shaft diameter, plate configuration and the penetration depth. A series of field loading tests was performed to evaluate the effect of helical pile configuration on the bearing capacity of helical pile, constructed in two different shaft diameters (i.e. 73 mm and 114 mm). In the same way, the diameter of bearing plate was also changed from 400mm to 250mm with one or three plates. As well, the penetration depth was varied from 3m to 6m to analyze the relation between the penetration depth and the bearing capacity. As a result, not only the increase of the shaft diameter, but also the number or diameter of helix bearing plates enhances the bearing capacity. Especially the configuration of the helix plate is more critical than the shaft diameter.

The helical pile is a manufactured steel pile consisting of one or more helix-shaped bearing plates affixed to a central shaft. This pile is installed by rotating the shaft into the ground to support structural loads. Advantages of the helical pile are no need for boring or grout process, and ability to install a pile foundation with relatively light devices. In this study, an optimized design method for helical piles is proposed to minimize the material cost with consideration of the load bearing capacity obtained by the cylindrical shear method. The harmony search meta-heuristic algorithm was adopted for optimization process. The optimized design was verified by comparing with the 2009 International building code. It is noted that the optimization for the configuration of helical piles along with material cost proves to be an out-performed tool in designing helical pile foundation with economic feasibility.
The helical pile has become popular with some constructional advantages because relatively compact equipment is needed for installing helical piles. However, field loading tests for estimating the bearing capacity of helical piles have drawbacks that the required dead load should be as much as the operation load, and reaction piles or anchors are required. In this paper, the bi-directional load test without necessity of reaction piles and loading frames was applied to the helical pile, and the load-settlement curves of the helical piles were measured. The bi-directional load test was performed in two separate stages with the aid of a special hydraulic cylinder whose diameter is equal to that of the pile shaft. In the first stage, the hydraulic cylinder is assembled immediately above the bottom helix plate, and the end bearing capacity of the helical pile is measured. In the second stage, the hydraulic cylinder is assembled above the top helix plate, and the skin friction of the helical pile is measured. The pile loading-test program was carried out for the two different helical piles with the shaft diameter of 89 mm and 114 mm, respectively. However, the configuration of helix plates is identical with three helix plates of 450-, 350-, 200- mm diameter. Results of the bi-directional load test were verified by the conventional static pile loading test. As a result, the bearing capacity estimated by the bi-directional load test is in good agreement with the result of the conventional pile loading test.
