Bathymetry survey around the Baengnyeong-do was made by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration (KHOA), using the Simrad EM3000 Multi-Beam EchoSounder (MBES) mounted at the hull of the R/V Badaro 1. Sound velocity were monitored with frequent sound velocity profiler(SVP) casts during the acoustic measurements. The depth distribution and fluctuation of thermocline varied locally owing to the effect of several current flows such as Kuroshio current and Yellow sea coastal waters. These uncertainties cause the falling-off in accuracy of MBES results. In this paper, the bathymetry results will be presented and their accuracy will be discussed along with comparisons to the time and spatial variations in sound velocity profile.
The distribution of anchovy eggs and larvae was studied using the ichthyoplankton samples and oceanographic data collected in the western and southern waters of Korea over the period of April through June in 1981 and 1982. Three water masses, the Tsushima Warm Current, the South Korean Coatal Water and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water, are found to exert extensive influences of the distribution of anchovy eggs and larvae. The Tsushima Warm Current contacts with the South Korean Coastal Water to produce a coastal front between Cheju Island and Tsushima Island in the southern waters of Korea. Off the west coast of Korea, a coastal front is also formed running parallel with the western coast-line of Korea in the area between the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water and the extended part of the South Korean Coastal Water. In the southern waters of Korea anchovy eggs were found chiefly in the coastal waters inside the front, and larvae appeared to both sides on the front. The distribution of anchovy eggs and larvae off the west coast of Korea, however, was limited largely to the coastal waters of more than $12^{\circ}C$ in temperature. In the southern waters of Korea prelarvae appeared in the coastal area, and postlarvae in the offshore area. While in the western waters of Korea prelarvae were found in the southern part of the waters, and postlarvae in the northern part. Anchovy eggs and larvae were distributed in the considerably limited area of the coastal waters off the south coast of Korea in 1981 when the temperature gradient of the coastal front was sharper than in 1982.

This study has been carried out to find the water Quality in coastal sea of fungmun area, southern Jeju Island. In-situ observations and water sampling had been made every month from July 1997 to June 2000. The distributions of water temperature and salinity over the study area have been 13.8~27.0℃ and 30.0~34.7‰, respectively. Salinity is showed low salinity from June to September (rainy season) because of rain. Tsushima Warm Waters (TWW) as ≥15℃ and ≥34‰ influence the adjacent sea around Jeju Island all year round. Yangtse Coastal Waters (YCW) influence the surface layer around Jeju from June to September and so strong stratification (termocline, halocline) resulted at the depth of between 20~30m at outer-sea. However the stratification does not happen even in summer at inner-sea, which seem to be caused due to vertical mixing by wind, waves and tides. A water mass of high value of water temperature and salinity (respectively 14.1~17.7℃, 33.9~34.1‰) stayed at the lower layer in outer-sea all the year round. It is probably formed by mixing between TWW and YSBCW(Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water). The mean value of DO was the lowest in summer and the highest in winter. COD and TH were the highest in summer and the lowest in winter. However, TP showed the lowest value in summer season, because the mean value of N/P ratio was over 16. The mean of N/P ratio was under 16 in other seasons. The phosphate would be a limiting factor in the growth of phytoplanHon in summer. Nitrate would be a limiting factor in other seasons. Distribution of chlorophyll a did not show any seasonal change in the study period, but especially increased during April and May in the first year(1998) and the second year(1999) all over the study area, which suggested that phytoplankton inhabitation distributed widely in the study area. The space averaged values were the highest for TIN in rainy season and lower for TP in rainy season than in other seasons. It suggests that river runoff influences the inner-sea.

Finite element grid system using h-refinement on the Yellow Sea was constructed based on previous study (Suh, 1999b) from 14 K to 210 K and special attention was concentrated on refining the coastal zone. In grid generation, depth change between adjacent points and non-dimensional tidal wave length ratio were considered. As a result approximately a quarter of the total nodes are located nearby 5 m of shallow area. Accurate bathymetry data using 30's and ETOPO1 with open boundary conditions of 8 major tidal constituents extracted automatically from FES2004 have been applied. In tidal simulation a 3-dimensional nonlinear harmonic model was setup and tidal amplification due to changes in vertical turbulent and bottom friction were simulated. In this study not only 8 major tidal constituents but also nonlinear shallow tides $M_4,$, $MS_4$ and long period $M_f,$, $M_{sf}$ were reproduced. It is found that implication of spatial variation of friction coefficient plays a very important role in reproduction of astronomical and shallow tides which are computed by iterative computation of nonlinear terms. Also it should be considered differently with respect to tidal periods. To understand the distribution of tidal asymmetry, amplitude ratio of $M_4/M_2$ and phase differences $2g(M_2)-g(M_4)$ were calculated. Tidal distortion ratio marks up to 0.2 on the west coast showing shallow coastal characteristics and somewhat wide range of ebb-dominances in front of Mokpo area are reproduced.

The buffer capacity of southern Korean waters in summer was quantified using data set of temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity obtained from August 2020 cruise. The geographical distribution and variability of six buffer factors, which amended the existing Revelle factor, are discussed their relationship with the hydrological parameters of temperature and salinity. The calculated results of six buffer factors showed the spatial variations according to the distributions of various water masses. The buffer capacity was low in the East Sea Surface Mixed Water (ESMW) and South Sea Surface Mixed Water (SSMW) where upwelling occurred, and showed an intermediate value in the Yellow Sea Surface Water (YSSW). In addition, the buffer capacity increased in the order of high temperature Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) and Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW). This means that the Changjiang discharge water in summer strengthens the buffer capacity of the study area. The highest buffer capacity of CDW is due to its relatively higher temperature and biological productivity, and a summer stratification. Temperature showed a good positive correlation (R2=0.79) with buffer capacity in all water masses, whereas salinity exhibited a poor negative correlation (R2=0.30). High temperature strengthens buffer capacity through thermodynamic processes such as gas exchange and distribution of carbonate system species. In the case of salinity, the relationship with buffer capacity is reversed because salinity of the study area is not controlled by precipitation or evaporation but by a local freshwater input and mixing with upwelled water.
Based on surplus production models using fishery data for the last 20 years, a stock assessment was conducted for the small yellow croaker in Korean waters. The maximum sustainable yields (MSY) from the Schaefer and Fox models were estimated to be 37,000 metric tons (mt) and 33,450 mt. Zhang's model using time-series biomass with instantaneous coefficients of fishing mortality (F) and using time-series biomass and catch yielded MSY estimates of 45,328 mt and 40,160 mt, respectively. A yield-per-recruit analysis showed that the current yield per recruit of about 20g with F= 1.11 $yr^{-l}$, where the age at first capture $(t_c)$ is 0.604, was much lower than the maximum possible yield per recruit of 43g. Fixing $t_c$ at the current level and reducing fishing intensity (F) from 1.11 $yr^{-l}$ to 0.4 $yr^{-l}$ yielded only a small increase in predicted yield per recruit, from 20 to 25g. However, estimated yield per recruit increased to 43g by increasing $(t_c)$ from the current age (0.604) to age three with F fixed at the current level. This age at first capture corresponded to the optimal length which was obtained from the $F_{0.1}$ method. According to the analysis of stock recovery strategies employing the Zhang model, the optimum equilibrium biomass $(B^*_{MSY})$ which produces the maximum yield could be achieved after approximately five years at the lower fishing intensity (F=0.5).
Studies on the circulation and water masses in the continental shelf break region of the East China Sea are Summerized as follows : 1. The main stream of the Kuroshio flowing north-east near $29^{\circ}N\;Lat\;127^{\circ}E$ tong of the East China Sea in summer is narrow in width. Moving toward east, it becomes twice as wide in Tokora Strait, Japan. 2. In the main stream area of the Kuroshio, the surface Waters in the Upper layer (0-250m) are influenced by the coastal waters of China, and the counter current submerges under the surface water. Therefore, the mixing waters are found in its intermediate layer. 3. Water mass between Amami Island and the continental shelf of the East China Sea consists of main stream water, counter current water, gyration water and mixed water with coastal waters. 4. The maximum velocity of current in this waters was 139cm/sec. The volume transport was estimated approximately as $24.2\;\times\;10^6m^3/sec$. It was less than $33\;\times\;10^6m^3/sec$ in the region between Okinawa and continental shelf of the East China Sea. 5. Surface waters east of $29^{\circ}N\;Lat\;128^{\circ}E$ Long flows toward Amami Island, Okinawa Island, and Hachi Ju San Island, while those west of the region flow toward the Korea-strait, Cheju Island, coastal waters of Kyusyu, and the Pacific Ocean through Tokora Strait. The velocity of the current was estimated approximately as $0.3\~0.5$ miles per hour. 6. The bottom waters in the continental shelf break region flow toward the Korea Strait, Cheju Island and the coastal water of Kyusyu, while that of the continental shelf flows toward the Yellow Sea, 7, The characteristics of the Kuroshio water is changed remarkably by the mixing with the coastal water of China.

Major and trace elements were analyzed in three core sediments to investigate geochemical characteristics of East Sea sediments and provenance changes during late Quaternary in Ulleung Basin. Comparing with Yellow and South Sea sediments, contents of major elements were generally similar while contents of trace elements were significantly different. Furthermore, within this basin, there were some variabilities in trace element compositions. In the western slope sediments (WS), Mo was enriched over 6 times as much as other sites. On the other hand, Zr, Nb, Hf and Ta were enriched in basin sediments (Basin), and Ca and Cs were enriched in southern slope sediments (SS). After excluding elements derived from biogenic, authigenic and diagenetic origins, the lithogenic elements (K, Ti, Cs, Zr, Nb, Hf and Ta) could be classified into three groups from the comparison of element/Al ratios among cores. The first group consisted of elements (K and Ti) that showed the nearly similar element/Al ratios among three cores. The second group contained Cs which showed significant difference between two slope sediments. The third group elements (Zr, Nb, Hf and Ta) showed highly enriched in basin relative to both slope areas. The depth profiles of metal/Al ratios in basin sediments provided the following interpretation for the compositions of sediment and their variation. From 10,000 yr B.P. to 7,000 yr B.P. two lithogenic components (volcanic ashes and western slope sediments) were mixed and deposited in the basin. After 7,000 yr B.P., however, southern slope sediments were mixed with volcanic ashes and deposited in basin area. This event of source change is nearly close to inflow period of the Tsushima Warm Current to Ulleung Basin. Thus, it might be suggested that element geochemistry in Ulleung basin sediment indicate the change of current system in the study area.

Distribution characteristics of phytoplankton community were investigated by HPLC and flow cytometry in Jeju Strait and the Northern East China Sea (NECS) in May 2004, in order to understand the relationship between physical environmental factors and distribution pattern of phytoplankton communities. Based on temperature and salinity data, three distinct water masses were identified; warm and saline Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), which is flowing from northwest of Jeju Island, warm and low saline water at the center of Jeju Strait, which is originated from China Coastal Water (CCW) and relatively cold and high saline water originated from Yellow Sea at the bottom of the Jeju Strait. At Jeju Strait, less saline water (<33 psu) of 15 km width occupied surface layer up to 20 m which located at 20 km offshore and strong thermal front between warm and saline water and cold and less saline water was found in the middle of the Jeju Strait. Vertical transect of temperature and salinity at the NECS also showed that low saline (<33 psu) water occupied the upper 20 m layer and cold and saline water was present at the eastern part. Chl a was measured as $0.06{\sim}3.07\;{\mu}g/L$. Spring bloom of phytoplankton was recognized by the high concentrations of Chl a at the low saline water masses influenced by the CCW and subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer appeared between $20{\sim}30\;m$ depth, which was at thermocline depth or below. Abundances of Synechococcus and picoeukaryote were $0.2{\sim}9.5{\times}10^4\;cells/mL$ and $0.43{\sim}4.3{\times}10^4\;cells/mL$, respectively. Dinoflagellate, diatom and prymnesiophyte were major groups and minor groups were chlorophyte+prasinophyte, chrysophyte, cryptophyte and cyanophyte. Especially high abundance of dinoflagellate was identified by high concentration (>1\;{\mu}g/L$) of peridinin at the bottom of the thermocline, which showed an outbreak of red tide by high density of dinoflagellates. Abundances of picoeukaryote in Jeju Strait were about $5{\sim}10$ times higher than abundance measured in Kuroshio water and showed a good correlation with Chl b (Pras+Viola), which implies the most of population of picoeukaryote was composed of prasinophytes. Prochlorococcus was not detected at all, which suggests that Kuroshio Current did not directly influenced on the study area. Based on the strong negative correlations between biomass of phytoplankton (Chl a) and temperature+salinity, the primary production and biomass of phytoplankton in the study area were controlled by the nutrients supply from CCW.
