  • This paper describes activated carbon block filters prepared by extrusion for water purifier. The specific surface area of the activated carbon blocks affecting the properties of a polymer binder were investigated. Polyethylene (PE) particles were used as a binder polymer and the effect of particle sizes on changes in the specific surface area of activated carbon blocks in addition to the adsorption properties of chloride anion in the aqueous solution were investigated. The sizes and shapes of PE particles were measured using SEM. The specific surface area of activated carbon was $1186m^2/g$. The specific surface area of PE binder was $444m^2/g$ and $940m^2/g$ with the particle sizes of $200{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$, respectively. In order to verify the performance of the filter, chlorine adsorption experiments were conducted.

  • Golf course community has always been concerned about water quality regarding to pesticide and fertilizer managements. This study conducted to investigate sorption and leaching behavior of common pesticides used for golf course in granular activated carbon I (GAC 1), granular activated carbon II(GAC II), and charcoal. We used batch study to investigate the influence of concentrations of Smithion and Folicur and particle sizes of GAC I, GAC II, and charcoal on sorption. Also, column study was used to investigate the leaching effect of Smithion in GAC I and charcoal. We found that sorption of Smithion and Folicur were higher in less $45{\mu}m$ of particle size for GAC I, GAC II, and charcoal compared to $1.7{\sim}2.0mm$ size, and the sorption of Smithion and Folicur in less $45{\mu}m$ of particle size ranged from 90 to 99%. In the column study, there was no difference in leaching effect between GAC I and charcoal. Overall, we found that charcoal might offer a cost effective adsorbent as a pesticides in leachate.

  • This work is a fundamental study for applying hybrid process coupling adsorption with microfiltration to waste-water treatment. Phenol was separated by adsorption on powdered activated carbon, adsorbed phenol with activated carbon was separated by microfiltration. As the particle size in suspension increased, filtration resistance decreased, and effect of particle concentration on resistance was less pronounced. The rate of uptake was greatly dependent on the degree of phenol loading. For a smaller amounts of activated carbon, the change of permeate concentration before break point and phenol loading with time were steeper than in the case of large amounts. Permeate concentration before break point decreased with decreasing particle size, this could be due to the increase of outer surface of particle and film mass transfer coefficient.

  • Adsorption isotherms and kinetics for taste and odor (T&O) compounds and natural organic matters (NOMs) were performed to evaluate the impacts of activated carbon particle size on coagulation and adsorption. Adsorption capacities for iodine, T&O compounds, and NOM of all the activated carbons under #325 mesh were more excellent than those of virgin activated carbons. Small activated carbon particles were more rapidly adsorbed low molecular weight T&O compounds in the water, while those were slowly adsorbed high molecular weight NOM. When the activated carbon and alum were added simultaneously, the adsorption capacity for organics was better than alum was added alone.

  • Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) produced by cyanobacteria during algal blooming in surface water are the major taste-and-odor-causing compounds in drinking water and need to be removed. Activated carbon is often used in treatment plants for the mitigation of odor problem. However, there is a lack of information on the effect of pore size distribution and particle size of activated carbon for adsorption of both odor compounds. Therefore, we studied the effect of pore size distribution and particle size of activated carbon on the adsorption of geosmin and 2-MIB. When comparing the adsorption of geosmin and 2-MIB between activated carbon fiber (ACF), powdered activated carbon (PAC) and granular activated carbon (GAC), the order of removal efficiency was PAC > ACF > GAC. As a result of comparing PACs with various pore distribution characteristics, well-developed micropores on activated carbon were found to be favorable for adsorption of geosmin and 2-MIB. For particle size, smaller was more effective for adsorption of geosmin and 2-MIB.

  • In this study, effect of activated carbon size on flux and fouling of membrane was investigated on activated carbon and membrane hybrid system. The activated carbon was prepared with crushing and screening. The activated carbon was named by A100, B100, A200, B200, A325 and B325 due to size of activated carbon. The permeability for A100, B100, A200 and B200 showed no significant difference. However, the permeability for A325 and B325 was decreased rapidly and was lowed due to increase the concentration of NOM. Main resistance for A100, B100, A200 and B200 was identified as irreversible fouling. However main resistance for A325 and B325 was identified as reversible fouling. The smaller activated carbon adsorbs NOM faster than bigger particles, which can show high permeability at early stage of the operation and then showed faster decrease of permeability at end of the operation.

  • This study was conducted to improve the operating conditions of an adsorption tower filled with potassium impregnated activated carbon for high hydrogen sulfide capture capacity. Heat treatment modified the surface properties of activated carbon, and ultimately determined its adsorption capacity. The activated carbon doped with potassium showed 57 times more adsorption at room temperature than that of using the raw adsorbent. It is believed that uniform pore formation and strong bonding of the potassium on the surface of carbon contributed to the chemical and physical absorption of hydrogen sulfide. The SEM analysis on the surface structure of various commercial carbons showed that the modification of surface properties through the heat treatment generated the destruction of pore structures resulted in the decrease of the absorption performance. The pressure drop across the activated carbon bed was closely related with the grain size and shape. The optimum size of irregularly shaped activated carbon granules was 2~4 mesh indicating economical feasibility.

  • With the development of industry, fine dust is causing difficulties in various fields such as environment, health, and life, and a large amount of pollutants generated from human social activities are emerging as a serious environmental problem due to air pollution. Therefore, in this study, activated carbon was added to remove fine dust and volatile organic compounds by spinning cellulose acetate polymer fibers on a silicon support using the electrospinning method. By varying the activated carbon ratio and electrospinning time, the fine dust blocking effect and toluene adsorption performance were confirmed according to the activated carbon ratio and filter thickness. As a result, it was shown that the particles were effectively blocked with the increase in the electrospinning time due to the filter thickness increase. Adsorbed amount of toluene was increased with increase in activated carbon amount. Light transmittance was decrease with increase in electrospinning time, showing that there were light transmittance in filters electrospun for 20~30 minutes.
