  • The present study assessed the micro structure and durability characteristics of ternary blended cement with different types of alkali activators. Ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS) and ferronickel slag(FNS) was replaced until 50 % of the weight of cement. In addition, potassuim hydroxide and sodium hydroxide were used for comparing the properties of different type of alkali activator. Ternary blended cement with alkali activators showed higher peak portlandite peak than that of OPC(Ordinary Portlande Cement) and non activated ternary blended cement. Also, there was no new hydration products in ternary blended cement or/and alkali activators. Based on the mercury intrustion porosimetry(MIP) test result, ternary blended cement increased macro pore while alkali activated ternary blended cement modified pore structure and increased microp pore as compared to OPC as control. Combination with alkali activators is desirable to enhance the compressive strength and freeze thaw resistance.

  • We investigated the secondary electron emission characteristics of MgO layer used as the protecting material in a.c. plasma display panel(a.c.-PDPs) using a pulsed ion beam technique, where the surface charging can be effectively suppressed during the measurement. The measurement of the secondary electron emission coefficients ($\gamma$) on the surface of $SiO_2$ was carried out and then, it was found that the yields were dependent on incident ion energies. In addition, it was clearly demonstrated that the sputtering on MgO surface leads to lower yields, which suggests that the surface plays a key role on the operating conditions, such as life time, fast response, and etc.

  • To confirm the usefulness of partial least-squares(PLS) and multiple scattering correction(MSC) method for quantitation of surfactants in [quantitative methods using FT-lR, reconsitituted mixtures of LAS, MES and ELA-9 were tested. Each mixture was dissolved in 50% EtOH, dried, and applied to the KBr cell. From the IR spectra of these mixture, the variance spectrum was obtained. After repeated calibrations for the various regios of this spectrum, we found that 1245-1130cm-1 and 1070-1010cm-1 showed the strong correlation with each component of the sample mixture: all the correlation coefficients were 1.000 and quantitative errors did not exceed 0.32%. From this result, we concluded that PLS method and MSC method are very useful and can be successfully applied to Quality control.

  • The effect of particle size on adsorption of trihalomethane have been studied. Using mean particle sizes ranging from 0.73 to 2.03 mm, physical properties of carbon and trihalomethane adsorption characteristics have been investigated experimentally. With increasing particle size specific surface area and pore volume decreased, and the mean pore radius increased significantly. Large pores were dominant in large particles, while small particles were composed of small pores. Isotherm studies were conducted using static bottle point technique and the results were well described by the Freundlich isotherm equations. The adsorption capacity increased significantly with decreased particle size. Additionally micro-column tests were carried out, and the results were compared with the model simulation. From the micro-column studies it was found out that the film transfer coefficient were almost constant, and the differences in the trihalomethane removal efficiency was mainly due to the differences in the adsorption capacity of the particles of different size.

  • The peel from seven types of citrus was extracted with 80% methanol, and their phenolic compound content, oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), inhibitory activities of nitric oxide (NO), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production induced by LPS and t-BHP in LPS-activated RAW 264.7 cells were measured. Total phenolic content was high in Yungkyool, Cheonhyehyang, and Jinkyool (30.6, 30.2, and 28.2 mg GAE/g, respectively), while total flavonoid content was high in Yungkyool and Jinkyool (30.3 and 25.5 mg RE/g, respectively). ORAC was the highest at 1,076 mM TE/g in Yungkyool, followed by Cheonhyehyang (1,012), Jinkyool (984), and Hallabong (914). High inhibitory activity against NO production was shown in Cheonhyehyang, Yungkyool, and Jinkyool with $IC_{50}$ values of 215.3, 259.2, and 328.9 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. LPS-induced ROS production was inhibited by 16.4% and 12.8% in Hallabong and Jinkyool, while t-BHP-induced ROS production was inhibited by 28.7%, 26.1%, and 26.6% in Jinkyool, Hallabong, and Cheonhyehyang, respectively. Correlation coefficients between total phenolic, total flavonoid content, and ORAC were 0.884 and 0.855. Inhibitory activity against NO production showed higher correlation with total phenolic content than total flavonoid content. It was concluded that citrus peels had potent antioxidant activities and could be used as natural antioxidants in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

  • In Korea, from January 2023, the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Food was revised to reflect the use-by-date rather than the sell-by-date. Hence, the purpose of this study was to establish a system for calculating the safety factor and determining the recommended use-by-date for each food type, thereby providing a scientific basis for the recommended use-by-date labels. A safety factor calculation technique based on scientific principles was designed through literature review and simulation, and opinions were collected by conducting surveys and discussions including industry and academia, among others. The main considerations in this study were pH, Aw, sterilization, preservatives, packaging for storage improvement, storage temperature, and other external factors. A safety factor of 0.97 was exceptionally applied for frozen products and 1.0 for sterilized products. In addition, a between-sample error value of 0.08 was applied to factors related to product and experimental design. This study suggests that clearly providing a safe use-by-date will help reduce food waste and contribute to carbon neutrality.
