  • In this paper, we performed the experimental and numerical study on the thermal comfort(TC) and indoor air quality(IAQ) in the lecture room with a different airflow rate of the ventilation system and heating system for heating season. Through the experimental results, we found out that there was considerably difference of the PMV but there was little difference of $CO_2$ concentration with a different heating system. From a numerical results, the best operating condition was that discharge airflow rate of SAC is 29 CMM and supply airflow rate of the ventilation system is 1,200 CMH from a viewpoint of TC and IAQ.

  • CIGS thin film solar cells are technically suitable for BIPV applications than regularly used crystalline silicon solar cells. Particularly, CIGS PV has lower temperature coefficient than crystalline silicon PV, thus decrease in power generation is lowered in CIGS PV. Moreover, CIGS PV can decrease shading loss when applied to the BIPV system, and the total annual power generation is higher than crystalline silicon. However, there are few studies on the installation factors affecting the performance of BIPV system with CIGS module. In this study, BIPV curtain wall unit with CIGS PV module was designed. To prevent increase of temperature of CIGS PV module by solar radiation, ventilation was considered at the backside of the unit. The thermal specification and electrical performance of CIGS PV of the ventilated unit was analyzed experimentally. Non-ventilated unit was also investigated and compared with ventilated unit. The results showed that the average CIGS temperature of the ventilated curtain wall unit was $6.8^{\circ}C$ lower than non-ventilated type and the efficiency and power generation performance of ventilated CIGS PV on average was, respectively, about 6% and 5.8% higher than the non-ventilated type.

  • Chiller systems which have better temperature stability than Direction expansion coils are often used as condensing units in HVAC systems for offshore plants. Large capacity compressors and electronic expansion valves in chiller systems are mostly imported, and the size of a chiller system depends on heat exchangers such as evaporators and condensers which are locally produced. Due to limited space in the offshore plants, shipyards are demanding manufacturers to make equipment compact. In this paper, a shell & tube heat exchanger, which is used as an evaporator in the conventional flooded chiller system, is replaced by a newly developed compact plate & shell heat exchanger. The main development process of the plate & shell heat exchanger is introduced, and its performances were experimentally evaluated with a real flooded chiller system, and the results are presented.

  • We performed the numerical analysis on the airflow characteristics in the two type of cleanroom systems, which are the axial fan type (AFT) and the fan filter unit (FFU). A computational fluid dynamic model was applied to investigate and compare the nonuniformity, the deflection angle and the air ventilation effectiveness of the two designs of cleanrooms when dampers are adjusted and not adjusted. And the flow-resistance models of the various components were used in this simulation. We know that the airflow characteristics of the cleanrooms are largely affected by damper adjusting And we also find out that the FFU system is superior to the AFT system through the comparison of the cleanroom performance indices.

  • Comprehensive study on the system, including blower and ducts, of HVAC device of a vehicle has been carried out for improvements of noise characteristics. The parameters of design improvements are concerned with geometric informations such as the shape of ducts and presence of a windshield window. Test results show that noise level increasing the following order: HV (HD) < V (D) < BH ${\sim}$ BHV (BHD) < B (B, H, V, D denote for blower, heater unit, vent duct, defrost duct, respectively). The effects of windshield glass on the noise level in the case of defrost mode are pronounced and the effects of the geometry of ducts on the overall HVAC noise prove to be not small.

  • This study investigates the air leakage and heat transfer characteristics of a rotary-type air-to-air heat exchanger with a fiber polyester matrix. The leakage airflow rate is measured using a tracer gas method for various ventilation rates and rotational speeds of the matrix wheel. A correlation equation for air leakage is obtained by combining the pressure leakage and the carryover leakage. The pressure leakage is observed to be a function of ventilation airflow rate only, and the carryover leakage is found to be a linear function of rotational speed. The real efficiency of the heat exchanger can be obtained from its apparent efficiencies by taking into account the air leakage ratio. As the ventilation rate increases, the heat recovery efficiency decreases. As the rotational speed of the matrix increases, the efficiency increases initially but reaches a constant value for the rotational speeds over 10 rpm.

  • In this paper, acoustic analysis of thermoacoustic refrigerating system was given and the design procedure meeting the specifications was presented. The thermoacoustic refrigerator transforms the sound wave energy into the thermal energy via adiabatic process of inert gas. The system is composed of mainly three parts ; the acoustic motor utilizing loudspeaker the stack of plate for thermal transport and the resonator to form the standing wave. Based upon the acoustic analysis, resonator dimension and stack position and size were decided, and the entire refrigerating system was designed to the given specification. Also the mechanical Impedance of the designed resonator was obtained by simulation.

  • In this study, a fan coil unit with an oval-type heat exchanger has been developed. The performance of the present fan coil unit has been investigated, by comparison with the previous fan coil unit with a circular-type heat exchanger. For the fan coil unit with circular- and oval-type heat exchangers, the heat flux and pressure loss through the heat exchangers were measured at standard operating conditions. In addition, the wind speeds exhausted from the fan coil units were compared, for the same fan motor operation. The experimental results show that the average wind speed of the oval-type heat exchanger is 20 percent higher than that of the circular-type heat exchanger. The heat flux in the oval-type heat exchanger is enhanced by 40% or more, over the circular-type heat exchanger.

  • An enthalpy exchanger in which heat and moisture transfer occur between the indoor and outdoor air operates at various outdoor conditions. In this study, the effect of the outdoor-air temperature and humidity on the performance of an enthalpy exchanger was experimentally investigated. An apparatus was specially-made to accurately measure the incoming and outgoing dry- and wet-bulb air temperatures as well as the flow rates. Tests were conducted in constant-temperature and constant-humidity chambers at different outdoor temperatures and humidities. It is shown that the effectiveness of latent-heat exchange increases as the relative humidity increases; further, this effect exhibited minimal dependence on the absolute humidity. However, the effectiveness of sensible-heat exchange is independent of both temperature and humidity

  • Textile-type heat exchangers installed on the tunnel walls for facilitating ground source heat pump systems, so called "energy textile", was installed in an abandoned railroad tunnel around Seocheon, South Korea. To evaluate thermal performance of the energy textile, a series of long-term monitoring was performed by artificially applying daily intermittent cooling and heating loads on the energy textile. In the course of the experimental measurement, the inlet and outlet fluid temperatures of the energy textile, pumping rate, temperature distribution in the ground, and air temperature inside the tunnel were continuously measured. From the long-term monitoring, the heat exchange rate was recorded as in the range of 57.6~143.5 W per one unit of the energy textile during heating operation and 362.3~558.4 W per one unit during cooling operation. In addition, the heat exchange rate of energy textile was highly sensitive to a change in air temperature inside the tunnel. The field measurements were verified by a 3D computational fluid dynamics analysis (FLUENT) with the consideration of air temperature variation inside the tunnel. The verified numerical model was used to evaluate parametrically the effect of drainage layer in the energy textile.
