  • The corrosion of steel reinforcing bar(re-bar) has been the major cause of the reinforced concrete deterioration. FRP(Fiber-reinforced polymer) reinforcing bar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. However, FRP re-bar is pone to deteriorate due to other degradation mechanisms than those for steel. The high alkalinity of concrete, for instance, is a possible degradation source. Other potentially FRP re-bar aggressive environments are sea water, acid solution and fresh water/moisture. In this study long-term durability performance of FRP re-bar were evaluated. The mechanical and durability properties of two type of CFRP-, GFRP re-bar and one type of AFRP re-bar were investigated; the FRP re-bars were subjected to alkaline solution acid solution, salt solution and deionized water. The mechanical and durability properties were investigated by performing tensile, compressive and short beam tests. Experimental results confirmed the desirable resistance of FRP re-bar to aggressive chemical environment.

  • Ettringite and thaumasite were observed in some concrete. The morphology and occurrence of these minerals were closely examined by performing SEM/EDAX analyses. We also experimentally induced the concrete deterioration using $Na_2SO_4$ solution with application of various environmental conditions. The stability of these minerals and deterioration characteristics under applied experimental conditions were determined. Abundant ettringite formed by“through solution reaction”occurred in many open spaces, and some microscopic ettringite formed by "tophochemical replacement" of calcium aluminate also occurred in cement paste. Severe cracking of cement paste causing premature deterioration was often associated with ettringite location. Under specific condition, ettringite was transformed to thaumasite, tricthloroaluminate, or decomposed. Thaumasite occurred with association of ettrinsite in concrete containing carbonate aggregate being subject to dedolomitization or in some concrete being subject to carbonation. Thaumasite appears to be formed under the similar condition to the general ettringite forming condition, but it formed solid solution with ettringite by substituting pre-existing ettringite. Ettringite can also be transformed to trichloroaluminate in the presence of abundant chlorides, but trichloroaluminate changed back to ettringite in late sulfate attack. It is considered that the substitution reaction direction solely depend on the concentration of chloride and sulfate ion.

  • Spalling of concrete occurs due to vapor pressure ignited explosion, temperature difference across a section, and combination of these factors. Factors affecting spalling can be classified into internal and external factors such as material property and environmental condition, respectively, have to be considered to precisely understand spalling behavior. An external environmental factor such as differences in heating rate cause internal humidity cohesion and different vapor pressure behavior. Therefore, spalling property, vapor pressure and thermal strain property were measured from concrete with compressive strengths of 30 MPa, 50 MPa, 70 MPa, 90 MPa, and 110 MPa, applied with ISO-834 standard heating curve of $1^{\circ}C/min$ heating rate. The experimental results showed that spalling occurred when rapid heating condition was applied. Also, when concrete strength was higher, the more cross section loss from spalling occurred. Also, spalling property is influenced by first pressure cancellation effect of thermal expansion caused by vapor pressure and heating rates.

  • To predict the service life of reinforced concrete structures exposed to chloride environment, quantitative measures of material properties such as the critical chloride content for corrosion in concrete and the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions of concrete and the surface chloride content of the concrete are essential. However, it should be noted that they are influenced by several factors such as concrete mix proportions, cement type, and environmental conditions, etc. Thus, the purpose of this research is to estimate more actually the critical chloride content for corrosion of the reinforcing steel in concrete by field exposure experiment. For this purpose, the prism concrete test specimens were made for water-cement(W/C) ratios of 31%, 42%, 50%, and 70%, and then the field exposure experiment for them were conducted at Youngduk of the east coast for about 3 years. During the test, corrosion monitoring by half cell potential method was carried out to detect the time to initiation of corrosion for test specimens and its chloride content was evaluated by breaking the concrete test specimens when corrosion of the reinforcing steel in concrete was perceived. It was observed from the test results that the critical chloride content for corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete would be dependent on W/C ratio and almost irrespective of concrete cover.

  • The disposal of constructive waste is emerging as a national and social issue and the recycled powder generated by the production of reproductive aggregate is all being abolished or buried Analysis on the harmful effect of recycled powder indicated that because it contained massive cytotoxicity, it could derive secondary pollution to soil and subterranean water. This study set on an idea that one way to recycle recycled powder was to use it as a compound of concrete. In order to study that prospect, recycled powder, instead of cement, was mixed and a comparative analysis was conducted on the mechanical properties and workability. From experimental results, it was judged that application of recycled powder of cement replacement ratio below 20% was available with chemical admixtures. Also application of recycled powder was available to high strength concrete.
