  • In this study, we tried to find the moderating effect as an interaction between brand concept variables and thinking style variables as well as the main effect of each. To this end, the inner wear bradns, CalvinKlein(symbolic concepts) and bodyguard(functional concept), as two parent brands and wallets as an extension product were selected. The results of this study were as follows: (i) Extension evaluation as well as fit judgement based on brand concepts was higher in symbolic brand than functional brand. (ii) The holistic thinkers were higher in fit judgement and expansion evaluation than the analytic ones. (iii) In case of symbolic brand, there was little differences in fit judgement and expansion evaluation between holistic thinkers and analytic thinkers. But In functional brand, there was some differences relatively. So, we found the interaction effect between variables in fit judgement and expansion evaluation. We can expect this research result to be helpful in working out diverse and practical marketing strategies using existing brand concepts in the global market environments.

  • This study is to investigate the influence of brand benefit on brand extension, especially focusing on the mediating effect of trademark belief and the moderating effect of categorical similarity. This study restates that brand benefit affect consumers' brand extension attitude and confirms that it is completely mediated by trademark belief. In addition, this study finds that categorical similarity moderates the effects of brand benefit on brand extension attitude. The results of this study suggest a theoretical implication that trademark belief can be used as one of the brand extension strategies and a practical implication that the brand communication strategy based on brand benefits should be changed with the categorical similarity.

  • Numerous products are on the market every day and consumption is becoming increasingly polarized. Some products have been introduced to the market for the first time and others are the existing products that have upgraded performance. For companies, new products must be released constantly to prevent losing existing customers and to increase loyalty. However, when companies released new product, they communicate consumer brand name and core benefits of the new product. Moreover, if a new product fails, the amount that the company has to pay is bound to grow. So companies often use brand extension strategies that use the names of famous brands that are already loved by their customers for new products. In this study, the effect of extension similarity, time of release, and message type on brand extension was investigated. Result shows that using abstract messages rather than specific messages is more effective when similarities with existing brands are poor. In particular, the closer the release period is, the more effective these effects are. However, in case of extending the brand with high similarity products, it is effective to focus on concrete messages when the release time is near, and to communicate abstract messages when the release time is long. This result suggests that companies should take into consideration not only the similarity of extension but also the timing and characteristics of messages when extending the brand.

  • Previous researches on advertising type of extension product have limitations in focusing on adult and simplifying advertising type of extension product as elaborational/relational ad. This study expands to children and subdivides advertising type of extension product by elaborational/relational/elaborational-relational ad. Based on these experimental setting, this study investigates the effects of interaction between age and advertising type in incongruent brand extension. The results show that adult's evaluation on incongruent extension product is the most favorable in elaborational-relational ad. On the other hand, children's evaluation on incongruent extension product is the most favorable in elaborational ad. Based on these findings, theoretical and practical implication and future direction are discussed.

  • As SPA brands are growing in Korean apparel markets, they are extending their well-established brands into new markets (i.e., SPA brand extensions). To investigate psychological mechanism underlying SPA brand extensions, this study conceptually proposed such consumer information processing of SPA brand extensions as (1) perception of similarity between SPA brand extensions and their original brands and (2) evaluations on the SPA brand extensions (i.e., attitude and purchase intent). For hypothetical SPA brand extensions (high, moderate and low similarity conditions), perceived similarity was measured by using a eye-tracker and evaluations were assessed by using a self-reported questionnaire. The results reveal that the amount of external information searching for SPA brand extensions was larger in the following order: moderate, low and high similarity conditions. The depth of SPA brand information processing was also deeper in the same order. Evaluations on SPA brand extensions were higher in high and moderate similarity conditions than in low similarity condition. The findings suggest that the evaluations are affected by perceived similarity and the amount of cognitive efforts in processing SPA brand extensions.
