Groundwater Flow Characterization in the Vicinity of the Underground Caverns by Groundwater Level Changes (지하수위 변화에 따른 지하공동 주변의 지하수 유동특성 해석)

  • Groundwater inflow into the caverns constructed in fractured rock mass was simulated by numerical modeling, NAPSAC (DFN, discrete fracture network model) and NAMMU (CPM, continuous porous media model), a finite-element software package for groundwater flow in 3D fractured media developed by AEA Technology, UK. The input parameters for modeling were determined on surface fracture survey, core logging and single hole hydraulic test data. In order to predict the groundwater inflow more accurately, the anisotropic hydraulic conductivity was considered. The anisotropic hydraulic conductivities were calculated from the fracture network properties. With a minor adjustment during model calibration, the numerical modeling is able to reproduce reasonably groundwater inflows into cavern and the travel length and times to the ground surface along the flow paths in the normal, dry and rainy seasons.

Estimating Average Causal Effect in Latent Class Analysis (잠재범주분석을 이용한 원인적 영향력 추론에 관한 연구)

  • Unlike randomized trial, statistical strategies for inferring the unbiased causal relationship are required in the observational studies. Recently, new methods for the causal inference in the observational studies have been proposed such as the matching with the propensity score or the inverse probability treatment weighting. They have focused on how to control the confounders and how to evaluate the effect of the treatment on the result variable. However, these conventional methods are valid only when the treatment variable is categorical and both of the treatment and the result variables are directly observable. Research on the causal inference can be challenging in part because it may not be possible to directly observe the treatment and/or the result variable. To address this difficulty, we propose a method for estimating the average causal effect when both of the treatment and the result variables are latent. The latent class analysis has been applied to calculate the propensity score for the latent treatment variable in order to estimate the causal effect on the latent result variable. In this work, we investigate the causal effect of adolescents delinquency on their substance use using data from the 'National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health'.

Evaluation of the Resistance Bias Factors to Develop LRFD for Gravel Compaction Piles (LRFD 설계를 위한 쇄석다짐말뚝공법의 저항편향계수 산정)

  • In this study, the resistance bias factors are calculated to determine the resistance factor of Gravel Compaction Piles which is one of the soft ground improvement methods. In order to calculate resistance bias factors for gravel compaction piles, two ultimate bearing capacities were analyzed. One is the ultimate bearing capacity in 2.54 cm settlement measured using data of the field loading test on 41 piles and the other is the ultimate bearing capacity calculated using the seven equations concerning bulging failure. The results of analysis show that the probability density function of the calculated ultimate bearing capacities has a lognormal distribution. Resistance bias factor and the coefficient of variation for Greenwood equation are 0.91 and 0.38, respectively, and for those of Hughes & Withers are 1.19 and 0.39. The two equations are suitable for calculating resistance factors for LRFD of soil improvement using gravel compaction piles.

  • A redundant sensor system, which consists of two incremental encoders and a gyro sensor, has been proposed for the estimation of the posture of mobile robots. A hardware system was built for estimating the heading angle change of the mobile robot from outputs of the gyro sensor. The proposed hardware system of the gyro sensor produced an accurate estimate for the heading angle change of the robot. A sensor data fusion algorithm has been developed to find the optimal estimates of the heading angle change based on the stochastic measurement equations of our readundant sensor system. The maximum likelihood estimation method is applied to combine the noisy measurement data from both encoders and gyro sensor. The proposed fusion algorithm demonstrated a satisfactory performance, showing significantly reduced estimation error compared to the conventional method, in various navigation experiments.

  • It is suggested that the service life of the continuous welded rail(CWR) is estimated by the relationship between the rail surface irregularity according to the accumulated passing tonnage and bending fatigue of welded part in CWR. In this study, based on the results of bending fatigue tests of rail and results of measuring tests in situ of rail bending stress, this study estimated the bending fatigue life of welded rail in concrete track, adopting a Haibach's rule. The bending fatigue life of CWR considered the rail surface irregularity, train speed and the S-N curve by types of rail welding. In addition, this study estimated it for the fracture probability 1%, 0.1%, 0.01%. Therefore, this study proposed bending fatigue life of CWR in concrete track.

Novel Bandwidth Scheduling Algorithm for DOCSIS 3.0 Based Multiple Upstream Channels (DOCSIS 3.0 기반의 다중 상향 채널 환경에서 새로운 대역 스케줄링 알고리즘 제안)

  • In this paper, we propose an novel bandwidth scheduling algorithm for the MAC protocol employed by the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) 3.0 compliant cable networks. The proposed algorithm statistically improves the chances of request piggybacking to minimize the access delay. It utilizes the piggyback request feature of the segment packets that has been newly specified in DCOSIS 3.0. In DOCSIS 3.0, a bandwidth request can be granted to several upstream channels within an upstream bonding group. The grant on each individual channel is treated as a segment packet. We find the optimal segment placement to minimize the access delay in the proposed algorithm. We also use a self-similar traffic model for simulation and analysis to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

A Study on the Variation of the Critical Duration According to Hydrologic Characteristics in Urban Area (도시유역에서 수문학적 특성에 따른 임계지속기간의 변화 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the relation of critical duration according to hydrologic characteristics in urban areas. RRL, ILLUDAS, SWMM, and SMADA urban runoff models were applied to the Seongnae and Banpo watershed and experiment area of the Dong-Eui University. Also, hydrologic characteristics such as temporal pattern of rainfall, rainfall intensity formula, antecedent moisture condition, return period, and urban runoff model were used to simulate the critical duration of the test areas. The results of this study are as follows; (1) The type of temporal pattern of rainfall which causes maximum peak discharge in urban area has resulted in Huff's 4th quartile distribution. (2) The critical duration in urban areas were not influenced by hydrological factors except urban runoff model. (3) Peak discharge and critical duration in urban areas were influenced by the urban runoff model, and the SWMM model using Huff's 4th quartile distribution shows maximum critical duration.

  • The average probability of a lightning strike to transport aircraft operating in airline service has been estimated to be approximately one strike in every year (or one strike per 1,000 through 20,000 flight hours). The important thing is not the probability of a lightning strike to aircraft, but the fact that aircraft is struck by lightning. Therefore, lightning protection design for aircraft should be qualified and compliance with airworthiness standards related to lightning protection must be substantiated in the process of certification. In this paper, I studied means of compliance for lightning protection through analysis of some test cases, including the KC-100 airplane that firstly obtained civil type certificate in Korea. Based on this paper, it will be also necessary to study on the effect of lightning for space launch vehicles.

Analysis of Channel Characteristics at Around 20 GHz for Satellite On-The-Move Terminal (이동형 위성단말을 위한 20 GHz 대역 채널 특성 분석)

  • This paper describes the analysis results of channel characteristics in the operating area of satellite OTM(On-The-Move) terminal. The communication channel between the Koreasat-5 and OTM terminal on a test car is measured and recorded from Daejeon to Daecheon, using the downlink frequency of around 20 GHz. And the measurement data are divided into two classes ; highway environment and national road environment, and then are statistically analyzed. The statistical evaluation of satellite channel is conducted by using probability density function and Markov model and then presents average connection duration(ACD), average fade duration( AFD), and level crossing rate(LCR) of highway environment and national road environment. Finally the statistics data of the two environments are compared with each other.

Missing Value Imputation Method Using CART : For Marital Status in the Population and Housing Census (CART를 활용한 결측값 대체방법 : 인구주택총조사 혼인상태 항목을 중심으로)

  • We proposed imputation strategies for marital status in the Population and Housing Census 2000 in Korea to illustrate the effective missing value imputation methods for social survey. The marital status which have relatively high non-response rates in the Census are considered to develope the effective missing value imputation procedures. The Classification and Regression Tree(CART)is employed to construct the imputation cells for hot-deck imputation, as well as to predict the missing value by model-based approach. We compare to imputation methods which include the CART model-based imputation and the sequential hot-deck imputation based on CART. Also we check whether different modeling for each region provides the more improved results. The results suggest that the proposed hot-deck imputation based on CART is very efficient and strongly recommendable. And the results show that different modeling for each region is not necessary.
