  • In this study, the multimedia CAl program for chemical equilibrium in high school grade 3 was developed and the effect of CAl on achievement and attitude toward chemistry instruction and computer was investigated. Before instruction, the test of attitudes toward chemistry instruction and computer were administered, and the grade in the mid-term examination was obtained. These scores were used as covariates. Mid-term science score was used as blocking variable. For chemical equilibrium instruction, traditional and computer assisted instruction were used. After instruction, the achievement test and the test of attitudes toward science instruction and computer were administered. The results indicated that students in the treatment group achieved significantly better than those in the control group, but did not show improvement of attitude to chemistry instruction and computer compared to those in the control group. No significant interaction between the treatment and the level of students' prior achievement was found. Female achieved significantly better under CAl than under traditional instruction. In two subtests(understanding and application), treatment group achieved better in the subtest of application than control group. CAl had an effect on chemical equilibrium state (about reversibility) significantly. While female of the treatment group did not show more positive attitude toward both chemistry instruction and computer significantly than that of the control group, male showed more positive attitude significantly. Educational implications are discussed.

  • Estimation of process safety is important in the chemical process design. Prediction for flash points of flammable substances used in chemical processes is the one of the methods for estimating process safety. Flash point is the property used to examine the potential for the fire and explosion hazards of flammable substances. In this paper, multivariate statistical analysis methods(partial least squares(PLS) quadratic partial least squares(QPLS)) using experimental data is suggested for predicting flash points of flammable substances of binary systems. The prediction results are compared with the values calculated by laws of Raoult and Van Laar equation.

  • The wavelength of chlorophyll-b on the absorbance and fluorescence emission were shifted to the longer depending on the increasing of solvent polarities but fluorescence excitation spectra were not. The presence of chl-b oligomers and monomers were identified by the specra of fluorescence emission. Fluorescence excitation, absorbance and the measurement of its intensities vs. the concentration of n-prOH added to chl-b solution. The calibration curve of chl-b solution were not obeyed to Beer's law in the range of concentrated soln. because of the presence as the oligomers.

  • The significant liquid structure theory is extended to binary mixture, benzene-ethylenechloride system. The partition function, applicable throughout the temperature range in which Raoult's law is satisfied is derived. The thermodynamic quantities such as total and partial pressures, molar volumes and mixing entropies are calculated from the partition function at the temperatures $293.15^{\circ},\;323.14^{\circ}\;and\;357.15^{\circ}K.$ The theoretical values, thus calculated, are found to agree with the experimental data in the literatures.

  • We studied absorbance of tinted dye absorbed into tinted lenses by Spectrophotometric method. Used lenses and tinted dye were CR-39 plastic optical lenses and Ons & $Lavas^{(R)}$ Blue, respectively. Absorbance values of tinted dye absorbed into tinted lenses were obtained from the differences of absorbance values between tinted lenses and CR-30 lenses. Average concentrations of tinted dye absorbed into tinted lenses were obtained from the mass differences between tinted lenses and CR-30 lenses. The relationship between absorbance and average concentration for tinted dye absorbed into tinted lenses was also confirmed to follow Beer’s law. The absorption coefficient calculated from the tangent of the calibration curve was determined to be a=0.983 $Lg^{-1}cm^{-1}$.

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the individual processes of pre-service chemistry teachers in making written test items. For this, we analyzed the think-aloud processes of eight pre-service chemistry teachers while making six written test items about gas laws and their in-depth interview scripts. The characteristics of the processes were found to be divided into six categories; the lack of systemicity in planning stage for making written test items, the lack of awareness and consideration for the interrelationship between instruction and assessment, the diverse criteria in determining test item types, the difficulties in judging behavioral domains and difficulties of items in the table of specification, the limitation in using teacher's guides and misunderstanding of teacher's guides, and the limitation in point and/or content of review and differences depending on the time of review. These can provide some significant guidelines and implications in finding ways to improve pre-service chemistry teachers' ability to make written test items.

  • A simple and new experimental method for determination of lysozyme-M. lysodeikticus cell lysis reaction and lysozyme activity was suggested using Beer's law. The UV transmittance of the solution changed with the concentration of M. lysodeikticus and the relationship between the UV transmittance and M. lysodeikticus cell concentration followed Beer's Law. In addition, it was experimentally proven that the UV transmittance of the solution was not influenced by the lysozyme concentration and product of the lysis reaction. During the lysozyme-M. lysodeikticus cell lysis reaction, thus, M. lysodeikticus cell concentration in the solution could be measured in-situ by UV-spectrophotometer. By using these experimental data, kinetic Parameters of the Michaelis-Menten equation for the lysozyme-M. lysodeikticus cell 1ysis reaction was simply determined The maximum reaction rate constant ($k_3$) and Michaelis-Menten constants were $0.1734sec^{-1}$ and $9.83{\times}10^{-6}M$ respectively. The activity of the lysozyme could also be obtained with this experiment because the lysis reaction rate of the 1ysozyme depended on its activity.

  • This study investigated the influences of situational interest, attention, and cognitive effort on drawing as a method to assist students to connect and integrate multiple external representations provided in learning chemical concepts. Seventh graders (N=178) at two coed middle schools were taught about the "Boyle's Law" and the "Charles's Law" for two class hours through drawing. They observed macroscopic phenomena through demonstrations. After these observations, they drew their mental model from the external verbal representation, and then compared their drawings with external visual representation. The tests assessing situational interest, attention, cognitive effort, and conceptual understanding were administered as post-tests. Correlation and path analyses supported a causal model which situational interest had a positive direct effect on attention to the drawing. Attention led to conceptual understanding directly as well as through cognitive effort. These results suggest that situational interest may be induced by drawing first of all, and attention and cognitive effort may be direct causes of conceptual understanding in drawing. Educational implications are discussed.

  • Uranium solubilities have been calculated for a range of conditions expected in a nuclear waste disposal repository. Variables taken into consideration include the pH and Eh range expected for deep groundeaters, the effect of the composition of groundwater. The model used in these calculations is based on the assumption of chemical equilibrium. Calculations show that the major variables influencing uranium solubility under the repository conditions are pH and Eh. The results of this study can be applied to an assessment of the nuclear waste disposal.

  • The flash point is an important indicator of the flammability of a chemical. The minimum flash point behaviour (MFPB) is exhibited when the flash point of a mixture is below the flash points of the individual components. The identification of this behaviour is critical, because a hazardous situation results from taking the lowest component flash point value as the mixture flash point. In this study, the flash points for the n-butanol + n-decane and n-octane + n-propanol systems which exhibit MFPB, were measured by Tag open-cup apparatus. The experimental data were compared with the alues calculated by the Raoult's law, the van Laar equation and the Wilson equation. The calculated values based on the van Laar and Wilson equations were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law. It was concluded that the van Laar and Wilson equations were more effective than the Raoult' law at describing the activity coefficients for non-ideal solution such as the n-butanol + n-decane and n-octane + n-propanol systems. The predictive curve of the flash point prediction model based on the Wilson equation described the experimentally-derived data more effectively than was the case when the prediction model was based upon the van Laar equation.
