Multi-walled carbon nanotube/polystyrene (MWCNT/PS) composites with various MWCNT contents were prepared by using a solution process with an aid of surfactant. Particularly, PS's with 3 different molecular weights (${\bar{M}}_n$ = 101500 g/mole for PS-1, ${\bar{M}}_n$ = 89900 g/mole for PS-2, and ${\bar{M}}_n$ = 85000 g/mole for PS-3) were used in this study. Thermal behavior of these composites was examined by using an oscillator rheometer at $210^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$, of above and below the critical flow temperature ($T_{cf}{\sim}195^{\circ}C$) of PS matrix, respectively. The storage and loss modulus, and the complex viscosity of these composites increased with increasing MWCNT content at both temperatures. Largest increases in the frequency-dependent moduli and complex viscosity were observed between 2 wt% and 5 wt% of MWCNTs at $210^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$. Only the composite at $210^{\circ}C$ showed the rheological phase transition from a viscous-dominant to an elastic-dominant behavior of the composites at a certain MWCNT content. The MWCNT content at the rheological phase transition of MWCNT/PS composites generally increased with decreasing molecular weight of PS, and was measured to be 3.5 wt% for MWCNT/PS-1, 3.2 wt% for MWCNT/PS-2, and 3.0 wt% for MWCNT/PS-3 composites.

This study attempts to verify the applicability of ceramic membrane as a separator by comparing the power generation characteristics in single-chamber MFCs using ceramic membranes to those in the MFCs using nafion membrane. The generated power in MFCs by using acetate as a substrate was more stable than that by using formate, propionate and butyrate, respectively. It was shown that the generated power by using formate substrate in MFCs was unstable and a little higher than that by using acetate, and the power generated by using propionate and butyrate were lower than that by using acetate. In order to find out the Pt catalyst effect, it was compared the power generated in MFCs using Pt-coated carbon cloth as electrode to that power using normal carbon cloth. The power generated in MFCs using Pt-coated carbon cloth as electrode was 1.2 times higher than that using normal carbon cloth. The Pt-coated carbon cloth was about 5 times more expensive than normal carbon cloth. It is suggested that both power generation efficiency and cost together should be considered in selecting electrodes of MFCs. It was found that the ceramic membrane was superior to nafion membrane by comparing to the power generation characteristics obtained. It was shown that average voltage values were $523.67mV{\pm}49.41mV$ by using synthetic wastewater, in MFCs of ceramic membrane as a separator. While average voltage values were $424.09mV{\pm}79.95mV$ by using synthetic wastewater, in MFCs of nafion membrane as a separator. The organic removal efficiency, 41.7% by using ceramic membrane was a little bit higher than 40.8% by using nafion membrane. This research implies ceramic membrane can be a valid alternative to nafion membrane as a separator when considering the power generation and the efficiency of organics removal.
It is important to find out a new material having high removal efficiency for the harmful algal blooms because the dispersion of Hwangto in a large amount to the sea water may bring some ecologically unfavorable problems. For this purpose, the efficiency of several natural and synthetic mineral species for the mitigation of algal blooms was measured. The mixing ratio of monominerals and the sea water with 3,000∼5,000 cells/$m\ell$ of Cochlodinium polykrikoides was 10 g/${\ell}$ and the removal ratio was measured by counting the living cells after the dispersion time of 10, 30 and 60 min., respectively. According to the experimental results, the removal ratio by illite, kaolinite, montmonmorillonite, red mud, Na-A type of zeolite ranged 84-92% after 1hr of contact time, which is comparable to that of Hwangto. The size of above monominerals ranged 3∼50${\mu}m$. Meanwhile, the amorphose material and hematite with the size of 50∼100 nm showed excellent removal ratio of more than 99% after 30min. of dispersion. The results of the study showed that the removal ratio was not related to the chemical composition and pH of the minerals applied but to the grain size. The experimental results strongly suggest that the main mitigation mechanism would be the contact and coagulation.
Three species of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Humicola grisea and Candida glabrata were assumed as microbial inoculants for fermentation of rice straw silage. Four types of silage innoculated with three yeasts including control (non-treatment) were opened on day 1, 3, 6, 9, 15 and 20 after ensiling, and analyzed for fermentation status (pH, crude protein, microbial counts) and the microbial population attached with silage texture using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The results obtained were summarized as fallow; The pH of silage juice was decreased to 4.3 after 6th day of fermentation in the treatments innoculated with yeast, but was not changed at the ranges of 5.47 to 5.67 in control. Crude protein concentration of silage was increased by 38~41% with yeast inoculation compared to control. From SEM observation, it could be confirmed that crude protein concentration of silage was increased by microbial growth and SCP synthesis. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida glabrata could be used as useful fermenters of rice straw silage.

Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) was prepared in a cylindrical reactor by the nozzle spouting method. The reactor was filled with $CO_2$ and $Ca(OH)_2$ suspensions were circulated through a nozzle to prepare PCC. This method has several advantages such as provision of large contact area between suspension and $CO_2$ and production of large number of nuclei in short time. By changing suspension concentrations, suspension temperature, flow rates of $CO_2$ and nozzle sizes, PCC from homogeneously dispersed $0.1{\mu}m$ to heterogeneous $0.3{\mu}m$ can be obtained. According to XRD analyses, most PCC formed was calcite with small amount of aragonite depending on the reaction conditions. Usually, the reaction proceeded at high pH and electric conductivities initially. Then, pH and electric conductivities decreased rapidly to the saturation condition. Results indicated that the specific conditions (temperature: $25^{\circ}C$, suspension concentration: 0.5 wt%, $CO_2$ flow rate: 1 L/min, nozzle size: 0.4 mm) were required to prepare uniform particle size (particle diameter: $0.1{\mu}m$) of PCC.
The composition of isocyanates and polyols influence prepolymeric properties of adhesive and calking sealant based on polyurethanes (PU). One component moisture curing prepolymers, which reacted with surface humidity of substrate, were synthesized in several kinds of composition. Reactivity, structural change and properties of the prepolymers were studied as a preliminary step to manufacture PU based adhesive and sealant. To study the effects of mole ratio ([NCO]/[OH]), we used toluene diisocyanate (TDI), 4, 4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), and ether-polyols such as PTMG and PPG which have good resistance to hydrolysis and excellent low-temperature properties. The each prepolymers could be prepared in different molecular weight without any significant structural change. The mole ratio 1.78 of [NCO] to [OH] showed the fastest reactivity. It was confirmed that effect of polyols was larger than that of isocyanates on the prepolymer in reactivity. Several kinds of compounds were manufactured with each prepolymer, and tensile and properties were tested. And the optimum quantity of curing accelerator for the PU was 0.05~0.1%. In the tensile test, TDI based PU was superior to MDI based PU, and also PTMG based PU was superior PPG based PU.
Oxygen reduction in an alkaline fuel cell was studied by using perovskite type oxides as an oxygen electrode catalyst. The high surface area catalysts were prepared by malic acid method and had a formula of $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$(x=0.00, 0.01, 0.10, 0.20, 0.35 and 0.50). From the result of XRD pattern and specific surface area due to the amount of Fe substitution and the consumption of ammonia-water, the complex formation of Fe ion with $NH_3$ was the main factor for both the phase stability of perovskite and the increase of specific surface area. Multi-step calcination was necessary to give a single phase of perovskite in catalyst precursor. The crystal structure of the catalysts was simple cubic perovskite, which was verified from the XRD patterns of the catalysts. The activity of oxygen reduction was monitored by the techniques of cyclic voltammetry, static voltage-current method, and current interruption method. The activity(current density) of oxygen reduction showed its minimum at x=0.01 and its maximum between 0.20 and 0.35 of x-value in $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$. This tendency was independent of the change of surface area.
A decomposition reaction of bauxite ore with $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ was investigated to prepare Al component pregnant solution for the direct product of high purity $Al_2O_3$ from low grade bauxite ore. Al component in the bauxite was sulfatized to $NH_4Al(SO_4)_2$ or $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ in this decomposition. The optimum conditions of the decomposition for bauxite ore were reaction temperature of $425^{\circ}C$, reaction time of 40min, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ weight ratio to bauxite of 7.0 and particle size of bauxite ore of -200mesh. The optimum leaching conditions of sulfated bauxite ore were leaching temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, leaching time of 1hr and pulp density of 200ml $H_2O$ to sulfated ore of 1.0g bauxite. Under the above mentioned decomposition and leaching conditions, 94% of Al component in the bauxite ore was extracted.
$(C_{10}H_8N_2H)_2Cr_2O_7$ was synthesized by reacting 4,4'-bipyridine and chromium (VI) trioxide. The structure of the product was characterized with FT-IR (infrared spectroscopy) and elemental analysis. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol using $(C_{10}H_8N_2H)_2Cr_2O_7$ in various solvents showed that the reactivity increased with the increase of the solvent dielectric constant, in the order of DMF (N,N'-dimethylformamide) > acetone > chloroform > cyclohexane. In the presence of DMF, an acidic catalyst such as $H_2SO_4$$(C_{10}H_8N_2H)_2Cr_2O_7$ oxidized benzyl alcohol (H) and its derivatives ($p-OCH_3$, $m-CH_3$, $m-OCH_3$, m-Cl, $m-NO_2$). Electron donating substituents accelerated the reaction rate, whereas electron acceptor groups retarded the reaction rate. Hammett reaction constant (${\rho}$) was -0.70 (308 K). The observed experimental data were used to rationalize the hydride ion transfer in the rate determining step.
To High Throughput Screening (HTS), a homogeneous fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) was developed for the quantitative determination of ochratoxin A(OTA) using a $Victor^3$ (PerkinElmer). The homologous tracer, fluorescein-labelled OTA-EDF were synthesized and a specific OTA antibody has been used in the development of the method. It allowed the determination of OTA in the concentration range 0.5-200 ng/ml, with the detection limit of 0.3 ng/ml. The method developed was highly specific and reproducible. OTA spikes in unpolished rice extracts were determinable by FPIA with good recovery. For naturally contaminated unpolished rice samples some disagreement was observed between the results obtained by FPIA and HPLC, which could be related to the a little matrix effect observed for FPIA. Further research is needed to validate the procedure. On the basis of these initial results, this FPIA appears to meet the performance criteria for OTA screening of food samples without a complicated clean-up.
