  • We investigated the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) in all 13 locations of Masan Bay from February to November in 2015. The COD and TOC contents were high during the June-August period when the pollution load increased. In particular, the concentrations of COD and TOC were about twice as high in the surface water as in the bottom water. In spatial distribution, the COD and TOC concentrations at the inner bay were about twice as high as those of the outer bay in Masan Bay. As a result of estimating the oxidation efficiency of COD from the surface layer of Masan Bay in 2015 based on the theoretical oxygen demand (TOD), it was at the level of about 23%. Due to the low oxidation efficiency of COD, there is a risk that the organic matter in Masan Bay will be somewhat underestimated. Therefore, for quantitative analysis of organic matter, COD and TOC analyses need to be combined.

  • The Nakdong river is both a natural resource crucial to underwater ecosystems and a water source for its basin's residents. Industrial wastewater and domestic sewage must meet the relevant standards for discharged water before they can flow into the river. The correlation between old and new measures of organic matter was examined using water quality data from 50 monitoring locations in the main stream of the Nakdong river. The coefficient of determination (R2) for total organic carbon (TOC), the new measure of organic matter, and chemical oxygen demand (COD), the old measure of organic matter, in the main stream of the Nakdong river was 0.6134, indicating high correlation. Water quality at each location assessed using TOC and COD showed disparities that cannot be ignored: quality appeared higher when evaluating the main stream of the Nakdong river using TOC instead of COD. Therefore, there remains a need to review water quality ratings based on TOC; continuous monitoring of COD is also required. In addition, the cause of the difference should be clearly identified to help assess artificial sources of pollution and natural factors affecting organic matter. Water management of the Nakdong river will then be possible using the water quality rating.

  • Based on the consideration of land based pollutant discharges from the basin and seawater quality related carrying capacity and the seawater quality improvement in receiving water bodies of Yeoja Bay where eutrophication and organic pollution are in progress, were evaluated. The permissible inflow loads of BOD, TN and TP by using the geographical features and box modelling method were estimated. As results, it is shown that the reduction rate of discharged BOD and TP loads were 39.3% and 30.8 %, respectively, however, 6.9% was estimated for TN. According to the pollutant loading in each tributary and generated load of the basin, it is given much weight on the land use group, and also was shown in discharged load estimation. This suggests that it is important to control nonpoint source pollutant such as livestock and land use groups as well as point source to contribute the proposition of the water quality improvement plan according to the characteristics of the bay.

  • The present study was performed to investigate the effects of NH3-N and nitrifying microorganisms on the increased BOD of downstream of the Yeongsan river in Gwangju. Water samples were collected periodically from the 13 sampling sites of rivers from April to October 2021 to monitor water qualities. In addition, the trends of nitrogenous biochemical oxygen demand (NBOD) and microbial clusters were analyzed by adding different NH3-N concentrations to the water samples. The monitoring results showed that NH3-N concentration in the Yeongsan river was 22 times increased after the inflow of discharged water from the Gwangju 1st public sewage treatment plant (G-1-PSTP). Increased NH3-N elevated NBOD levels through the nitrification process in the river, consequently, it would attribute to the increase of BOD in the Yeongsan river. Meanwhile, there was no proportional relation between NBOD and NH3-N concentrations. However, there was a significant difference in NBOD occurrence by sampling sites. Specifically, when 5 mg/L NH3-N was added, NBOD of the river sample showed 2-4 times higher values after the inflow of discharged water from G-1-PSTP. Therefore, it could be thought other factors such as microorganisms influence the elevated NBOD levels. Through next-generation sequencing analysis, nitrifying microorganisms such as Nitrosomonas, Nitroga, and Nitrospira (Genus) were detected in rivers samples, especially, the proportion of them was the highest in river samples after the inflow of discharged water from G-1-PSTP. These results indicated the effects of nitrifying microorganisms and NH3-N concentrations as important limiting factors on the increased NBOD levels in the rivers. Taken together, comprehensive strategies are needed not only to reduce the NH3-N concentration of discharged water but also to control discharged nitrifying microorganisms to effectively reduce the NBOD levels in the downstream of the Yeongsan river where discharged water from G-1-PSTP flows.

  • In spite of high concentrations of SS(>30mg/l) in July 2010, the water condition of Manripo was fine for swimming as COD data lower than 2.0mg/l in summer continuously. The bloom of phytoplankton or red tide were not occurred in the waters. COD data from the waters of Daechon were lower than 2.0mg/l, except August. Relatively high SS concentrations were the characteristics of Daechon beach and were caused by the effects of mud resuspension. The dominant taxa of phytoplnkton communities were consist of diatoms as the normal groups of neritic sea waters.

  • The optimal removal efficiency to develop wastewater treatment system using the magnetic ion exchange resin. The secondary sedimentation effluent of wastewater in W wastewater treatment plant located in Gyeong-gi Province was used as the influent. To compare the sedimentation effluent reacted with the magnetic ion exchange resin to the influent, the concentrations of CODmm, TN, $NO{_3}^-$-N and TP were measured. The flux of the influent and HRT were set to 250 mL/min, 10 min, respectively, and BVTR has adjusted to 200, 150, 100. The removal efficiency of CODmn, TN, $NO{_3}^-$-N and TP in the 200 BVTR from 71%, 40.37%, 46.34%, 42.03%, 150 BVTR from 55.22%, 37.83%, 50.38% 41.6% and 100 BVTR from 74%, 59.15%, 79.94%, 79.16%, respectively. The results on 200 BVTR, 150 BVTR, 100 BVTR tests show that 100 BVTR is the optimal factor capable of the highest rate of rejection of the organic material.

  • Bottom sediment-river water samples were studied to determine the extent of biodegradable matter and to examine the reduction of COD, TKN and TOC by using of warburg and aerated batch reactor. Warburg studies were conducted to study the Oxygen Uptake Rates, Reaction Rate Constants and CBOD. Bacth reator studies were conducted to determine the reduction of COD, TKN and TOC. Results from the batch recator study indicate high concentration of COD in samples. Less than 10 precent of the Organic Carbon was found to be biodegradable in 48 hours of Warburg experiment. Appreciable Immediate Oxygen Demand of sediments suggests that dredging of the river bottom is likely to deplete dissolved significantly in the river water.

  • We carried out a survey on tributary streams in some agricultural areas along Nakdong River to evaluate the effects of agricultural practices on pollution of stream water and groundwater. General properties, nutrient materials and heavy metals in water samples were measured. General physicochemical properties of tributary stream waters were at levels favorable for agricultural water. Heavy metals, except Zn, were mostly not detected. Total-N contents were much higher than the criteria of agricultural water, and nitrate-N accounts for more than a half of total-N. Phosphorus contents were higher than the lower level of P for algae growth and the contents were high especially in summer. In ground waters which are used for irrigation, P were mostly at same levels as those in streams, and nitrate contents were higher than 10mg/L in some samples. In these results only those N and P contents in stream and ground waters higher than pollution criteria are problematic and they are traceable to agricultural nonpoint sources-fertilizers, livestock farms and sewage. Further researches are needed to evaluate contributions of each nonpoint source on stream water pollutions.

  • The mechanism of water pollution in Lake Shihwa, one of highly eutrophicated artificial lakes in Korea, has been studied using a numerical 3D physical-biochemical coupled model. In this study, the model was applied to estimate the contribution of land-based pollutant load to water quality of heavily polluted Lake Shihwa. The chemical oxygen demand(COD) was adopted as an index of the lake water quality, and the spatial distribution of an average COD concentration during the summer from 1999 to 2000 was simulated by the model. The simulated COD showed a good agreement with the observed data. According to reproducibility of COD, the high-est levels between 8 and 9 mg/L were shown at the inner site of the lake with inflow of many rivers and ditches, while the lowest was found to be about 5 mg/L at the southwestern site near to dike gate. In the pre-diction of water quality of Lake Shihwa, COD showed still higher levels than 3 mg/L in case of reduction of 95% for land-based pollutant load. This suggests that the curtailment of land-based pollutant load is not only sufficient but the improvement of sediment quality or the increase of seawater exchange should be considered together to improve a water quality in Lake Shihwa.
