  • This study was carried out to determine the optimum EC supply by accumulation amount of solar radiation in closed system. EC concentration of drainage was higher than that of supply. The higher EC concentration of supply was, the lower pH of drainage was. It was no difference in the quality of cut rose 'Nobles' (Rosa hybrida), stem length, stem diameter, leaf number, petal length, and petal diameter by EC treatment by season. The yield was higher about $6\%$ in treatment of EC $1.3dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in April and May, about $10\%$ in treatment of EC $10dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in June, July and August, and about $10\%$ in treatment of EC 1.0 or $1.3dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in September and October than the others. In general, the yield of the cut rose was higher in treatment of (B) EC 1.3 mS/cm in spring, EC $1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in summer, EC $1.3dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in autumn, and EC$1.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in winter.

  • A new $Saxifraga$ $fortunei$ cultivar 'Crystal' was bred by crossing 'Dotaerang' with light pink and light Green (RP 58D) colored petals and 'Rocksun' with light pink and light green white (RP62A + GW157A) colored petals. The selection and flower characterization were conducted from 2004 to 2007 in a greenhouse of the National Institute of Highland Agriculture. The flowering of 'Crystal' occurred from September 21 for 31 days. The number of flowers per plant was 279.0 with many flowering habit. The flower coloration was mixed light pink and green white (RP62D + GW157B) at the opening. The number of petals were 7.0, with a width of 2.1 cm and length of 1.8 cm. The plant height was 15.3 cm and number of leaves was 133.7. 'Crystal' cultivar can be used for pot flower. Fifty percent shading is a good cultural practice against direct sunlight and soft rot disease would occurs usually by over-irrigation. 'Crystal' cultivar was registered as a new variety with No. 3466 at Korea Seed and Variety Service in April of 2011 year.

  • This study was conducted to find characteristics of photosynthesis for dwarf and street tree cultivars of Hibiscus syriacus L. Characteristics of growth and flowering on some cultivars were investigated. The photosynthetic capacity for the cultivars was also measured. Bulsae showed the best height increase; Soyang represented the lowest growth. Baektanshim ${\times}$ Kyungbuk1 had the largest number of branches and leaves. Sundeok and Bulsae were the best in terms of height and width of flower, Soyang showed the smallest flowers. According to the analysis of chlorophyll content (chlorophyll a, b, total) for the cultivars, there was little difference between Sundeok and Bulsae. Based on light response curves for cultivars, it was found that Baektanshim ${\times}$ Kyungbuk1 and Soyang had lower light compensation and light saturation points than Bulsae and Sundeok. Cultivars Baektanshim ${\times}$ Kyungbuk1 and Soyang were also low in dark respiration, photosynthetic capacity, and net apparent quantum yield. In conclusion, it is recommended that cultivars Baektanshim ${\times}$ Kyungbuk1 and Soyang might be used as a dwarf type due to photosynthetic capacity.

  • The major morphological characteristics of 97 lines selected from 1,510 local collection lines of Paeonia spp. were studied and classified into some groups according to their Q correlation. The Coefficient of Variation of 8 characteristics in 97 lines varied greatly with the range from 21.3% to 127.1%. The 22 lines with useful morphological characteristics selected from 97 lines had 2n=10 chromosomes, in which there were no difference among the number of chromosomes of 22 lines. The 97 lines were classified into 14 groups based upon the results of Q correlation analysis obtained from data with 16 quantitative factors; Group III and group VI were divided into two sub-groups. Group I was large flowered lines with a single flower, Group IIIa, doubled flowered lines, Group VII, late maturing lines and Group IX, early maturing lines flowering in 17th May. Group VIII were dwarf type lines which has the shortest stem length and leaf length among 14 groups, which are suitable for potted plants. Group XIII had a lot of stems per plant and a large type leaf with leaf length and width. A needle-type leaf was found in Group X, whereas a wide and oval-type leaf in group XII.

  • In order to obtain the basic information on cross breeding of peony, the growth and floral characteristics were investigasted for local collected strains in main cultvation area in Korea. Local peony strains were classified by early emergence lines and late emergence lines according to the emergence date. Flower color of single-petaling flower was varied with red, pink and white, on the other hand, red+red, pink+white, pink+red and pink+pink in double-petaling flower. Number of pistil of the most local peony strains was 3-4/flower, number of stamen was varied from 0 to more than 200 ea/flower, classifing by 4 groups according to the diameter of flower. Most of the cross combinations showed the cross comptibility, and number of follicle was 3-5 ea/flower, average number of seed was 15.6 ea/follicle, seed size was grouped : by small grains with less than 10g, medium grains with 10-15g and large grains with more than 15g of 100 seed weight.

The flower have 5.0 petals, each have the size is 2.9 cm in width and 3.2 cm in length. Mean plant height is 15.8 cm and number of leaves are 44.3 ea. 'Pinkle' can be used as a pot flower. Fifty percent shading of the sunlight is recommended and soft rot disease occurs caused by over-irrigation. 'Pinkle' was registered as a new cultivar in Korea Seed and Variety Service in April 2011.
