An Analysis of the Port Competition Structure: Focusing on Import and Export Items of Ports in Western Coast Region (항만의 경쟁구조 분석에 관한 연구: 서해안권 항만 수출입품목을 중심으로)

  • This study examines 31 import and export cargo items handled in each port to investigate which items face the most competition among the ports and how many of them are transited to other ports. The study aims to suggest implications for the future port policy of Incheon Port. It was found that the volume concentration in the Western Coast region from 2005 to 2014 became increasingly decentralized. The decentralization began in earnest in 2009 in particular, and the value was 0.448 in 2014, indicating fierce competition among the regions. According to the static and dynamic positioning analyses results for Incheon Port, Pyeongtaek and Dangjin Port, and Gunsan Port, using BCG Matrix, the static positioning analysis showed that Incheon Port belongs to the 3rd quadrant (Cash Cows), Pyeongtaek and Dangjin Port belongs to the 2nd quadrant (Question Marks), and Gunsan Port belongs to the (Dogs) group. This implies that Incheon Port has maintained its position with large shares compared to those of other ports, despite its low growth rate. However, the market position and growth rate of Incheon Port decreased according to the dynamic positioning analysis results. The shift-share analysis results indicated that the volumes of Incheon Port and Gunsan Port were shifting to Pyeongtaek and Dangjin Port. Moreover, the ratio of absolute growth to potential growth of Incheon Port and Gunsan Port turned out to be significantly lower than that of Pyeongtaek and Dangjin Port, implying that Incheon Port and Gunsan Port are declining as compared to Pyeongtaek Port and Dangjin Port. According to the LQ index analysis results, specialized items from Incheon Port that do not overlap with other ports included the following ten items: meat, fish and crustaceans, bituminous coals, crude oil and petroleum, petroleum-refined products, plastic rubber and products, textiles, nonferrous metal and products, electric machinery, and aircrafts and ships. In particular, it was confirmed that the bulk cargo of Incheon Port was actually shifting to Pyeongtaek and Dangjin Port following the policy of re-establishing port functions.

A Longitudinal Analysis of Deconcentration Process for the Top 20 Airlines in China (중국 상위 20위 항공사의 탈 집중화 현상에 대한 종단적 연구)

  • With the rapid development of China's economy, the aviation industry, as an important part of transportation services, has undoubtedly achieved rapid development. However, there is hardly any academic work that was based on the development of the top airlines in the Chinese airline industry. Hence, this study provides empirical research that takes into account the longitudinal development of the top 20 airlines in China from 2009 to 2018. The throughput volumes (cargo and passenger) of the airlines were analyzed by concentration indicators, namely the concentration ratio (CR), the Herfindahl- Hirschman index (HHI), the Gini coefficient, and the shift-share analysis (SSA). In this paper, the top 20 airlines have been analyzed in terms of the passenger and cargo throughput from 2009 to 2018. The calculation results of CR6, HHI and the Gini coefficient show that the airlines were extremely deconcentrated. In addition, by comparing the ABSGR of passenger and cargo throughput, it is shown that China's aviation industry is dominated by four airlines- Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines. In the future study, it is necessary to explore growth strategies to find niche markets for passenger and cargo transportation.

A Development Strategy of Busan New Port by a Comparative Analysis on Singapore and Hong Kong Ports (싱가포르 및 홍콩항과의 비교분석에 의한 부산 신항의 발전전략)

  • In order for Busan New Port to secure more trading volumes than the competing ports at home and abroad, an alternative plan for the new port management policy needs to be sought. By the way, aiming to minimize trial and error while maximizing effect in establishing and driving the new port management policy, there is necessity of referring to the developmental strategies of the advanced ports such as Singapore and Hong Kong that are possessing the globally leading position as well as maximizing the substantial value added and the employment-creation effect even qualitatively. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to propose for a reasonable development strategy for Busan New Port in line with conditions and characteristics of Busan New Port by comparing and analyzing conditions and characteristics of these two advanced ports and by comparative analysis on the developmental strategy according to this.

Applying Ultra-WideBand Location System to Yard Crane (UWB위치인식 시스템의 야드 크레인 적용)

  • Recently, a container shipping volume has increased dramatically and continued on a trend of rapid growth, and so the number of container handled at the port increase. therefore, it's increasing about concern of harbor automatism to save distribution costs in harbor. harbor automatism classifies into four large automatism's, gate automatism by using RFID that trailer come with burdening the container to be loaded on ships go though with RFID and Quay-Side container crane automatism that treats cargos loading on ships and automatism of CG that loads containers from yard, and automatism of container transporters that carries containers in between gates. To increase the using efficiency of harbor, detecting exact location of yard crane is very important matter. In this paper, propose about yard crane automatism applied UWB Location system and the development direction.

  • 최근에 세계화, 무역자유화에 따른 컨테이너 물동량이 증가하고 있다. 그에 발맞추어 초대형 컨테이너선이 등장하게 되고 신개념, 고효율의 항만인프라의 도입이 요구되고 있다. 이런 배경에 따라 최근에 국내외에서 부유식 안벽에 관한 기술 개발 및 연구가 더욱 필요한 상황이다. 부유식 안벽은 이동가능한 부유식 구조로 기존 항만의 확장 또는 신규 항만 건설시 환경문제를 최소화하고 기항, 선박수 및 선박의 크기에 따른 안벽 배열을 최적화 할 수 있어 항만 기능을 고도화함으로써 녹색항만을 구현하는데 많은 기여를 하게 될 것이다. 특히 컨테이너선의 양현하역과 환적이 가능하게 되어 컨테이너 터미널의 화물처리능력을 확대할 수 있을 뿐 아니라 기항선박의 체류시간을 최소화 할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 또한, 우리나라는 삼면이 바다로 크고 작은 항만들이 해안선을 따라 위치하고 있다. 이러한 항만들을 안전하게 보호하기 위한 방파제는 항만 기본시설인 외곽시설 중의 가장 중요한 구조물이다. 국내에 설치된 방파제는 대부분 사석이나 케이슨을 이용한 중력식 방파제로써 해저에 고정되어 해수면상으로 건설되므로 항내 외 해수교환을 차단하여 항내 수질악화를 초래할 뿐만 아니라 수심에 따라 막대한 건설비용이 소요된다. 따라서 친환경적이고 경제적인 새로운 형식의 방파제에 대한 연구 및 개발이 필요한 실정이다. 그 중 하나의 대안인 부유식 방파제는 공사기간이 짧고 비교적 수심에 대한 제약이 없는 것이 특징이다. 또한 해수의 원활한 흐름이 가능하기 때문에 중력식 방파제에 비해 경제적이며, 환경적 측면에서 큰 장점이 있다. 하지만 아직까지 부유식 방파제에 대한 국내 및 해외에서의 연구는 이론적인 해석을 중심으로 이루어져 부유식 방파제 실용화를 위한 많은 연구가 수행되어야 할 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구에서는 부유식 안벽 내에서 정온도를 효과적으로 유지하기 위하여 부유식 방파제를 설치하고 소파성능과 부유식 안벽내의 영향성을 수리모형실험을 통해 분석하였다.

The Data Envelopment Analysis of Container Terminals to Transshipment Cargo (환적화물의 컨테이너 터미널 효율성 분석)

  • This paper focuses measuring the efficiency of container yards on container terminals in Busan (Gasungdae, Shinsundae, Gamman, New Gamman, Uam, Gamchon, PNC) and Gwangyang(GICT, KEC, Dongbu, KIT) using Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) approach. Container terminals in Busan and Gwangyang play an important role in the region's economic development. The results show that Shinsundae was an efficient DMU during the period of 2007 to 2009, while Gamman, New Gamman and PNC were efficient terminals in 2009. The very inefficient terminals were shown to be GICT, KEC, Dongbu and KIT. GICT(2009), KEC(2009), Dongbu(2008-2009), KIT(2009) on Gwangyang Port were found to be relatively the inefficient terminals in terms of the returns to scale. This study also finds that the efficiency of Shinsundae terminal was so high as to be abel to keep its efficiency in spite of the additional increase of the inputs from 2007 to 2009. Gamman terminal was in the decreasing returns to scale in 2009, while the other terminals were in the increasing returns to scale. It means that we are able to improve the efficiency of the Gamman terminal with increasing returns to scale through enlarging the scale.

A Comparative Study on the Efficiency of Major Container Ports (세계 주요 컨테이너항만의 효율성 비교 연구)

  • This study aims to analyse efficiencies of international main container ports. For the purpose, it selected twenty main ports based on the volume of cargo of ports recorded in Containerisation International Yearbook and conducted BCC(efficiency analysis) on them. The variables which may influence efficiency of ports were selected based on previous studies. Berth, Depth, Crane and Total area were input variables and Total TEU was an output variables. The results are summarized as follows: First, DEA-CCR efficiency of Shenchen Port(China) was 1.0, which was the most efficient poor analysed. Second, DEA-BCC efficiency of Port of Singapore, Shenchen Port(China), Ningbo Port (China), Port of Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia) was 1.0, which was the most efficient analysed. Third, efficient scale of Shenchen Port(China) has been 1.0 for four subsequent years from 2004 to 2007, which was the most efficient analysed.

Recent Development in Technologies for Short Sea Shipping and its Implications (근해운송시스템의 기술 분야별 개발 현황 및 시사점)

  • Recently, the logistics industry in Asia is growing rapidly mostly with Chinese economic development. A variety of studies have been carried out to reduce the logistic cost under the situation that the global freight traffic continues to increasing. The Short Sea Shipping(SSS) system, a multi modal transport system centered around coastal shipping to realize high value-added logistics, achieved considerable success in EU. To implement the SSS system in Korea, it is necessary to develop the various essential technologies related to development of efficient ships and port facilities, including equipment for loading and unloading containers, operating and managing systems for freight terminals and technologies for tracking and securing containers. The present paper focuses on the survey of the current essential technologies available for implementation of the SSS system and suggests the direction of future development in the technologies.

An Analysis of Selection Factors for Capital Region Ports of Call Using the Fuzzy Theory (퍼지이론을 활용한 수도권항만의 기항지 선택요인 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Recently Incheon Port and Pyeongtak·Dangjin Port called as Capital Region Ports have enjoyed ever-increasing cargo volumes. However, there is a lack of research on this region while plenty of outputs were suggested on mega hub and regional hub ports in terms of shipping companies and stakeholders' port choice criteria. To identify and evaluate the Capital Region Ports, this paper identifies the factors and sub-components influencing their port choice and presents a structure for evaluating them. Based on the literature related to port selection and competition, a regional survey employed Factor Analysis to reveal that 'port facility and link', 'cost and service', 'port hinterland' and 'information service and port operation policy' are the determining factors in these regions. From the overall evaluation using Fuzzy Theory, Port of Incheon Port obtained high score compare to that of Port of Pyeongtak Dangjin.
