  • Purpose: In spite of many arguments on the result of WHI (Women's Health Initiative) study, no one can deny the necessity for researches on the alternative treatment to HRT (hormone replacement therapy). In this study, the author wanted to investigate the method of precedent acupuncture RCTs (randomized controlled trials) to make out the appropriate acupuncture study design on postmenopausal and perimenopausal hot flashes in Korea. Methods: Precedent studies were investigated using Pubmed search and key-words "acupuncture and hot flash", "acupuncture and menopause", "acupuncture and vasomotor", limited to RCT, from 2000 to 2008 April. Results: As a result. 10 studies were searched. In the hereafter studies, multi-center clinical trials which consist of population group of postmenopausal and perimenopausal women that would be pre-stratified and more than 50 patients per treatment arm seem adequate. Sham control study can make out the proper consequence because many people are get used to acupuncture in Korea. Flexible choice of acupoints addressed an individual's symptoms using standardized algorithm is recommended. Treatment consist of 4 weeks' observation, 11 acupuncture sessions during 7 weeks, follow-up of 3 months or more after treatment and hot flash score as a primary outcome measure seem appropriate. After all, higher level of description according to global standard must be obtained in the study report and publishing. Conclusion: The researchers should develope the methodology of acupuncture clinical trial on the postmenopausal and perimenopausal hot flashes.

  • This study investigated the immune-enhancing effects of polysaccharides extracted from Gloiopeltis furcata (red seaweed) with different molecular weights. A crude polysaccharide mixture was hydrolyzed using acid treatment (0.1 N HCl) and three molecular weight fractions were generated and filtered using centrifugation: (${\leq}10kDa$, 10 to 100 kDa, and 100 kDa. Nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW264.7 cells treated with $0.01-0.5{\mu}g/mL$ polysaccharides ${\geq}100kDa$ was $12.28-19.05{\mu}M$. Treatment with polysaccharides ${\geq}100kDa$ increased cytokine levels, including TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-6 levels, in a dose-dependent manner. Polymerase chain reaction analysis also revealed marked increases in iNOS and COX-2 mRNA expression levels. These findings lead us to conclude that macrophage activation induced by polysaccharides ${\geq}100kDa$ was greater than that induced by polysaccharides ${\leq}10kDa$ or between 10 and 100 kDa. The polysaccharides ${\geq}100kDa$ extracted from Gloiopeltis furcata investigated herein are potentially useful as natural immune-enhancing agents. These findings provided further insights into the potential use of ${\geq}100kDa$ as immunopotentiator or new function food.

  • This study empirically verified whether aggressive order intake affect occurrence of defects of Korean construction companies. In order to compensate for the shortage of construction costs due to aggressive low-cost orders of contractors, self-response measures such as design changes are followed, and construction defects may be induced in this process. It aims to verify relevance between aggressive order intake and defect in construction empirically using financial accounting data. As a result, it was confirmed that an abnormal increase in order volume and a deterioration in profitability such as operating margin due to aggressive order taking behavior leads to a decrease in construction quality and occurrence of defects. In addition, it was also confirmed that low construction ability and intentional changes in construction design or contract conditions after construction commences were a direct causes of defects. The results of this study can serve as an opportunity to come up with measures to prevent defects by confirming the relationship between defects in construction and deterioration of profitability due to aggressive low-cost order takings.

  • This study empirically verified whether or not employee education and information technology have impact on the enhancement of financial performance to Korean construction companies. As a result, the increasing of education & IT expenses turned out to be affected the improvement of sales performance. The influences of these increased expenses are effective at the only year just after expenditure. The positive effect of education & IT expenses increasing have an effect on operating profitability as well such as increasing of operating income. Additionally, the effect of education expenses are more positive in general construction & building construction than other subdivision of construction industry. The positive effect of IT expenses increasing in specialty construction industry overwhelm the other subdivisions. The results suggest that increased investment to the education & IT systems of Korean construction companies can lead improvement of sales and operating income.

  • The monthly variability in marine algal flora and community structure was examined in the intertidal zones of Doripo, and the biomass of an edible alga, Ulva prolifera, at Gaip-ri of Hampyong Bay on the southwestern coast of Korea was investigated over one year from April 2008 to March 2009. A total of 22 seaweeds were identified including five green, four brown, and 13 red algae. Based on importance value, Ulva australis was dominant over the year and the subdominant species were Ulva linza and Caulacanthus ustulatus at the Doripo coast of Hampyong Bay. The vertical distribution in terms of importance values was in the order of Ulva linza - C. ustulatus - U. australis - Sargassum thunbergii from the upper to the lower intertidal zones. The biomass of U. prolifera ranged between 2.4-98.2 g dry wt. m-2, with a maximum in June and a minimal in November. In the field, U. prolifera biomass could be positively related to seawater temperature. However, further research on the association between biomass and other environmental factors such as nutrients and light intensity is required.

  • Recent deep learning-based face synthesis research shows the result of generating a realistic face including overall style or elements such as hair, glasses, and makeup. However, previous methods cannot create a face at a very detailed level, such as the microstructure of the skin. In this paper, to overcome this limitation, we propose a technique for synthesizing a more realistic facial image from a single face label image by controlling the types and intensity of skin microelements. The proposed technique uses Pix2PixHD, an Image-to-Image Translation method, to convert a label image showing the facial region and skin elements such as wrinkles, pores, and redness to create a facial image with added microelements. Experimental results show that it is possible to create various realistic face images reflecting fine skin elements corresponding to this by generating various label images with adjusted skin element regions.

  • The distribution of seaweed was examined in Jeonnam archipelago marine ranching area, the coastal of geumo-do, Yosu. Abundance and distribution of seaweed in dropping site of artificial reef were sampled at 6 station at October 2007. Seaweed community were investigated with quadrat method at line-transect by scientific SCUBA divers. as a result, 30 species in total, 4 green, 9 brown and 15 red seaweed were identified. Range of seaweed biomass in all sampling stations were about 1,600~4,000 g/m2. At intertidal zone, appearance of individuals and dominance rate were showed higher than below the subtidal line and at depth from 4m to 6m, individuals, dominance rate and biomass were represented low level. characteristic of water in marine ranching area is turbidity and also compensation depth is low. For that reason, individuals of seaweed community were smaller from depth of 4 meters. Therefore, when equip the artificial reef for preparation of seaweed beds need consider that equipment periods(early spring; before releasing marine seaweed spore) and suitable water depth(3~6m).
