  • The stability of CGAs(colloidal gas aphrons) prepared from non-ionic and ionic surfactants was investigated. Those surfactants were sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), Triton X-100, Tween 80 and Quillaja Saponin. The stability of CGAs prepared from single surfactants or mixed surfactants(two components) using a CGA generate. was investigated as functions of temperature, surfactant concentration and stirring time. Saponin among the single surfactants has shown the longest duration time(143 min) and then, Triton X-100, SDS, and Tween 80 were followed by at room temperature. In case of CGAs heated up to $70^{\circ}C$, SDS endured for 116 min but Saponin lasted for only 105 mit which was a considerable reduction of the duration time of CGAs at room temperature. For mixed surfactant pairs, stability of any one pairs stood between the two. That meant no synergic effect for surfactant blending. At the higher temperature, Saponin+Triton X-100 was disclosed to be the lowest, 53 min meanwhile Saponin+SDS was the highest at ambient temperature. The CGAs, initially about 140 ${\mu}m$ in diameter, began to grow right after the agitation to be about 190 ${\mu}m$ owing to coalescence of the bubbles and then became to collapse. When heated, CGAs including Saponin tended to be smaller while the others to be larger. In summary, we found that the stability of CGAs or the duration time was greater for single surfactants and at room temperature rather than for mixed surfactants that caused substantial intermolecular interactions in the CGA structure and at the higher temperature.

  • Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a representative dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) and has contaminated substance environments including soil and groundwater due to leakage and careless. DNPAL, has been treated by surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR). After application of SEAR, groundwater contains still surfactant as well as little amount of residual TCE. Permeable reactive barrier using zero-valent iron (ZW) is a very effective technology to treat the residual TCE in groundwater. In this study, the effect of the residual surfactant on the reductive dechlorination of residual TCE was investigated using ZVI. Mixed surfactant composed of nonioinic surfactant and cationic surfactant was used as a residual surfactant because of toxicity and enhancement of dechlorination rate. Structure of surfactant affected significantly the decrhlorination rate of TCE. Mixed surfactant system with relatively short polyethylene oxide (PEO) chain in nonionic surfactant, cationic surfactant did not affect TCE dechlorination rate. However, mixed surfactant system with relatively long PEO chain in nonionic surfactant shows that TCE dechlorination rate was significantly dependent on fraction of cationic surfactant and HLB of nonionic surfactant. Cationic surfactant with trimethyl ammonium group enhanced reductive dechlorination rate compared to that surfactant with pyridinium group.

  • The surfactant self-diffusion coefficients of mixed micellar solutions of ionic and nonionic surfactants have been measured by the NMR pulsed field gradient spin echo(FT-PGSE) method. In addition, the line widths of $^1H$ NMR signal have been monitored. The system investgated are $C_{12}EO_5/SDS/D_2O$, $C_{12}EO_5/DTAC/D_2O$, and $C_{12}EO_8/SDS/D_2O$. In the sample series, the molar ratios of $D_2O$ to surfactant(ionic+nonionic) were kept constant while the surfactant mixing ratio was varied. For the $C_{12}EO_5$ system, the surfactant self-diffusion coefficient indicates minimum when the surfactant mixing ratio is about 20% ionic surfactant. The observed decrease in self-diffusion coefficients as nonionic surfactant was replaced by ionic surfactant is interpreted to mainly be due to an increased micelle-micelle repulsion. The increase in self-diffusion coefficients occurring at higher fraction of ionic surfactant is shown to be due to a decrease in micelle size. For the $C_{12}EO_8$ system, the effect of the surfactant mixing ratio is much weaker which can be understood by considering the molecular geometry and large headgroup area. The proton NMR line widths correlate well with the self-diffusion coefficients and broadening of the alkyl chain methylene signals is found when the self-diffusion coefficients is low.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of the mixed surfactant systems and the solubilization conatant (Ks) values of 4-ethylaniline in those solutions were measured and analyzed by the UV-Vis method. As a result, the mixed surfactant systems of TTAB/LSB and TTAB/TX-100 did not deviate significantly from ideal mixed micellization. However, the mixed systems of SDS/LSB and SDS/TX-100 showed great negative deviations from ideal mixed model. These differences showed that the intensity of the interaction between two components in the mixed micelle was different for each mixed system and that these differences greatly influenced the solubilization of 4-ethylaniline by a mixed surfactant system. Among pure surfactants, an anionic surfactant such as SDS showed a greater Ks value than other ionic surfactants, and the Ks value by each surfactant system decreased in the order of SDS≫TTAB≧LSB>TX-100. In addition, the Ks values of all the mixed surfactant systems were higher than those of the pure surfactants constituting the mixed systems.

  • The critical micelle concentration $(CMC^{\ast})$ and the counterion binding constant (B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), and cetyldimethylethylammonium bromide (CDEAB) were determined at $25^{\circ}C$ as a function of ${\alpha}_1$ (the overall molc fraction of DPC) by the use of electric conductivity method. Various thermodynamic parameters $(X_{i},\;{\gamma}_{I},\;C_{i},\;a^{M}_{i}, \beta,\;{\Delta}H_{mix}, \;and\; {\Delta}G^{o}_{m})$ for the micellization of DPC/DTAB, DPC/TTAB, and DPC/CDEAB mixtures were calculated and analyzed for each system by means of the equations derived from the pseudophase separation model. The results show that the DPC/DTAB mixed system has the greatest deviation and the DPC/CDEAB mixed system has the smallest deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model.

  • In this study, the effect of the addition of fluorinated surfactant FS-606 on the solubilization of n-hexane by hydrocarbon surfactant CDP-W was investigated. Oil drop contacting experiments revealed that solubilization rate is independent of initial oil drop size and proportional to the initial surfactant concentration, suggesting that solubilization of n-hexane oil by the surfactant mixture of FS-606 and CDP-W is controlled by an interface-controlled mechanism. In addition, the solubilization rate has been shown to increase with an increase in FS-606 composition, reach a maximum, and then decrease with a further increase in FS-606 composition. On the other hand, the interfacial tension between micellar solution and n-hexane oil has been found to decrease with an increase in FS-606 composition, reach a minimum, and then increase with a further increase in FS-606 composition.

  • The effects of surfactant types and the ratio of nonionic and anionic surfactants on the washing of diesel contaminated soil were investigated. In batch tests, the nonionic surfactant, which has HLB within 12-13, showed a high diesel removal efficiency and Tergitol 15-S-7 (T15S7) with 20 g/L concentration exhibited the highest removal efficiency of 79-88% among the tested nonionic surfactants. Anionic surfactants, in general, showed lower removal efficiency than nonionic surfactants. In case of mixed surfactant system, the removal efficiency increased with nonionic surfactant concentration. With mixed surfactants of T15S7 and SDS as 3 : 1 ratio, diesel removal was enhanced to 76% with 10 g/L of the mixed surfactants. These results could be used in the selection of proper surfactants for remediation of diesel contaminated soils.

  • To select antifungal surfactants, control efficacy of various nonionic and anionic surfactants on cucumber powdery mildew was evaluated under greenhouse conditions. Among 14 surfactants, pentaetylene glycol monododecyl ether ($C_{12}E_5$), mixture of heptaethylene glycol monodecyl ether and heptaethylene monododecyl ether, and heptaethylene glycol mono-9-octadecenyl ether effectively reduced the development of powdery mildew on cucumber plants. Among the surfactants, $C_{12}E_5$ gave the best control efficacy on the disease and did not show phytotoxic response in cucumber plants. Whereas, fenarimol at a recommended rate (31.3 mg/L) showed less control activity than the surfactant (1,000 mg/L). In addition, mixtures of the surfactant and DBEDC, a protective fungicide, showed high control efficacies against powdery mildews of cucumber and strawberry by additive effect in greenhouse tests.

  • The dynamic surface tension of GL12 (easily biodegradable nonionic surfactant and mild to skin), LAS and SLES aqueous solutions and that of mixed surfactant systems were measured by the maximum bubble pressure method at different mixing ratios. The effects of various salt such as NaCl, CsCl and urea on the dynamic surface tension of mixed surfactant systems were also studied. The dynamic surface tension of GL12 was not influenced by the presence of salts. On the contrary, the dynamic surface tensions of anionic surfactants (LAS and SLES) were significantly affected by the salts. In the mixed surfactant systems, the effect of salt increased as the composition of anionic LAS or SLES increased in the GL12/LAS and GL12/SLES mixtures.

  • Surfactant flushing for enhancing the removal of BTEX from contaminated sand/clay mixtures was investigated. Eight soil columns packed with relatively undisturbed BTEX contaminated soils, were leached with water, methyl alcohol and then flushed with surfactant with or without several additives. Initial concentrations of BTEX mixture range from 278mg/kg to 1975mg/kg. Initial BTEX removal efficiency was 98% when the contaminated soil was flushed with water of 850 pore volumes. Because of tailing effect, water flushing could not remove below 8mg/kg concentrations during the experimental period. Eventually, the most effective surfactant for flushing was turned out to be 4% SOFTANOL(equation omitted)-90 with 3% ethyl alcohol and 3% SXS. In interrupted flow conditions, the removal efficiency was 99.5% with the flushed water of 95 pore volumes. The BTEX mixture removed from the soil columns during the surfactant flushing ranges from 84.5% to 99.5% of the initial amount for both water leaching(850 pore volumes) and surfactant flushing(95-165 pore volumes), respectively. Test results indicated that surfactant flushing could enhance the removal of BTEX mixture from contaminated soils and could reduce the aqueous phase BTEX mixture concentration in leachate.
