To find out the way to be able to prolong the grazing years of mixed pasture under Cheju summer-hot weather, an experiment designed with split plot (main plot : 3 cutting-plant height such as 15cm, 30cm and 45cm and sub plot : 4 white clover varieties such as Regal, Tahora, Brown and SRVR) was carried out at Cheju Agricultural Experiment Station during the period from Sept. 1994 to Oct. 1996 Dry matter yield in 15cm plant height in cutting dates has shown significantly lower increase than those in 30 and 45cm(P<0.05). There was highiy significant increase in dry matter yield of Brown plot when compared with other varieties of white clover in 2nd year(P<0.01). There was no difference on botanical composition of mixed sward as affected by plant height in cuttings dates in 2nd year. The percentage of white clover tends to lower in white clover varieties Brown and SRVR when compared with Regal and Tahora. The rate of weed was not affected by plant height in cutting dates and white clover variety in mixed pasture at last cutting time of 2nd year. In 15cm plant height, concentration of ADE and NDF was the lowest one while P contents was the highest one(P<0.01). Potassium contents was the lowest one in 30cm plant cutting height(P<0.05), and nitrogen showed statistically interaction between plant cutting height and white clover variety(P<0.01). White clover variety was no effective on concentration of constituents in mixed pastures. In conclusion, white clover variety SRVR harvested at 15cm plant height is effective on nutrient value of pasture and balance of grass and white clover in botanical composition.

Recently, fallow paddy land located in the mid-mountain area (FPL) due to a decrease in rice consumption has increased in some regions of our country. So, grasses and forage crops available for years in once sowing should be introduced in FPL. This study was conducted to develop the technique for cultivation of grasses and forage crops using animal manure in FPL The field experiments were carried out from 2007 to 2009 on FPL at Kumsan, Chungbuk province in Korea. Cattle feedlot manure (CFM) was prepared by mixing feces and urine of cattle with rice straw in cattle feedlot for 6 months. The experimental plots were consisted of four treatments; tall fescue-based mixed pasture applied with chemical fertilizer (Control), mono-tall fescue pasture (MTFP), tall fescue-based mixed pasture (TFBMP), mono-Perennial ryegrass (MPR-FCM), mono-Italian ryegrass (MIR-FCM), mono-Red clover (MRC-FCM) and mono-Reed canarygrass (MRCG-FCM) applied with FCM. The field of tall fescue-based pasture had been sown with a grasses mixture containing 'Fawn' tall fescue, 'potomac' orchardgrass, 'Reveille' Perennial ryegrass, and 'kenblue' Kentuky bluegrass, 'Kenland' Red clover. Seeding rates were 16, 6, 4, 2 and $2\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. DM yields of forages and rates of grass coverage was higher in MTFP, TFBMP and MRCG-FCM as compated with control treatment. This result means that FPL has contained with favorable conditions for growing grass, because forage productivity is more than 15 tons per ha per year in fallow paddy land. In addition, the farmer can save the trouble of repeated plowing and sowing every year, due to the introduction of perennial grasses. The farmer must conduct the re-seeding and induce the improvement of management methods for the elevation of the persistence of red clover and perennial ryegrass, because both red clover and perennial ryegrass having high nutritive value and palatability was less persistent. Therefore, we suggest that FPL may be the good land for forage production utilizing FCM and FCM can be applied on FPL without any negative effects on DM production and the property of soil. FPL of Korea can be better utilized by applying FCM to the mono and/or mixed swards.

This study was conducted to develop the technique for cultivation of forage crops using swine slurry in fallow paddy land located in the mid-mountain area (FPL). The field experiments were carried out from 2007 to 2009 on FPL at Kumsan, Chungbuk province in Korea. Swine slurry was prepared which decayed for 6 months. The experimental plots were consisted of seven treatments; tall fescue-based mixed pasture applied with chemical fertilizer (Control), mono-tall fescue pasture (MTF), tall fescue-based mixed pasture (TFBM), mono-Perennial ryegrass (MPR), mono-Italian ryegrass (MIR), mono-Red clover (MRC and mono), Reed canarygrass (MRCG) applied with swine slurry. Seeding rates were 16, 6, 4, 2 and 2 (kg) per ha, respectively. DM yields of forages and rates of grass coverage were higher in MTF, TFBM and MRCG as compared with control treatment. This result means that FPL has contained with favorable conditions for growing grass, because forage productivity is more than 14.5 tons per ha per year in fallow paddy land. In addition, the farmer can save the trouble of repeated plowing and sowing every year, with the introduction of perennial grasses. The farmer must conduct the re-seeding and induce the improvement of management methods for the elevation of the persistence of red clover and perennial ryegrass, because both red clover and perennial ryegrass having high nutritive value and palatability was less persistent. Therefore, we suggest that FPL may be the good land for forage production utilizing swine slurry and swine slurry can be applied on FPL without any negative effects on DM production and the property of soil. FPL of Korea can be better utilized by applying swine slurry to the mono and/or mixed swards.

The object of this experiment was to suggest the optimum utilization upon rye and hairy vetch crops in Daejeon area. The field trials were conducted from 2002 to 2004 at Chungnam National University in order to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality of rye, hairy vetch, and rye+hairy vetch mixtures. The experiment was designed with split plots (main plot : seeding rate as rye mono culture, hairy vetch monoculture, rye 80%+hairy vetch 20%, rye 60%+hairy vetch 40%, and sub plot : 4 cutting stages as boot, heading, anthesis, milk). The average DM yield for 2 years had a difference on seeding rate and harvesting stages. The DM yield of rye monoculture was higher than those of the other seeding rates. There were significant increases in advanced stages in all treatments. In chemical composition, they also had a difference on seeding rates and growth stages. Hairy vetch monoculture was higher in crude protein (CP) and dry matter digestibility (DMD), but lower in fibrous compound than those of the other seeding rates (p<0.01). The crude protein dry matter (CPDM) and digestible dry matter yield was higher in rye 80%+hairy vetch 20% mixture when it was harvested at anthesis to milk stages. The results of this experiment indicated that when it was harvested at anthesis to the milk stages, rye 80%+hairy vetch 20% mixture was more effective in enhancing the DM yield and forage quality in Daejeon area.

This experiment was conducted at college of Agriculture and Life Science in Chungnam National University from September, 2004 to June, 2007 in order to evaluate the mixture possibility between barley and rye in the area of Daejeon. Rye (cultivar; Koolgrazer) and barley (cultivar; Daeyeon Bori) were set for the experiment. The experiment was arranged in four treatments: R100 (rye 100%), R60 + B40(rye 60% + barley 40%), R50% + B50% (rye 50% + barley 50%), and R40% + B60% (rye 40% + barley 60%). The experiment was repeated three times in the randomized complete block. The average dry matter (DM) yield for three years of R100 weighed 9,282 kg and its DM yield was higher than any other DM yield. The higher the barley seed rates are, the lower the DM yield is (p<0.05). As the barley seed rates increased 40%, 50%, and 60% respectively, its vegetative percentage tended to increase 30%, 41%, and 47%, but the barley vegetative percentage against its seed rates did bring forth somewhat low results. Compared with R100, the contents of crude protein (CP) and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) got higher as the barley seed rates became higher, while the contents of NDF, ADF, cellulose, and lignin were lower (p<0.05). Compared with R100, the yields of crude protein dry matter (CPDM) and digestible dry matter (DDM) showed lower in the any mixed barley (p<0.05). Thus, in case of using barley mixed with rye in the area of Daejeon, it seems to be quite difficult, unless the supply of high-productive barley variety is followed, to enhance the yields of DM, CPDM, and DDM.

This experiment was conducted over a 3-year period (1990-1992) to evaluate the production and quality of orchardgrass (Potomac)-red clover (Kenland) mixture when orchardgrass + red clover mixture was sown at seed rates of 20+0. 18+2, 16+4, 14+6 and 12+8 kg/ha. Total herbage dry matter, crude protein and digestible organic matter production and organic matter intake were markedly affected by increasing rcd clover seed rate, those increased with increasing red clovcr seed rate due to the cnhancernent of red clover percentage of total herbagc in all 3-year. but significant differences occured between the orchardgrass alone and orchardgrass-red clover mixture with a seed rate of 4,6 and 8 kg/ha red clover (P<0.01). But on the other hand increasing red clover seed rate increased red clover percentage in total herbage, the mean red clover percentage of total herbage at the last cutting ranged from 54 to 65% in first year. 58 to 60% in second year, and 62 to 69% in third year, particularly it was observed that red clover was sown at seed rates of 6 and 8 kg/ha for red clover sown dominated strongly as the cutting times were progressed. Considering the maintenance of good botanical composition balance and the enhancement of production and quality of herbage, the optimized seed rate for orchardgrass-red clover mixtures, 16 kg/ha orchardgrass and 4 kg/ha red clover seems to be considered adequate.

This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of grazing and cutting system in the seven different seed mixture plots on the dry matter yield and botanical composition from October 1983 to November 1986 at 200m above the sea level in Cheju. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Dry matter yield was increased more cutting system than that of grazing system during the first and second harvest year (P<0.01), but at the third harvest year grazed plot was increased (P<0.05). 2. Three-year average dry matter yield tended to be relatively higher with tall fescue mixture plots (T4 and T7) than without tall fescue mixture plots. 3. In botanical composition of the seed mixtures, orchardgrass was observed to be more dominate in cutting system, while perennial ryegrass was increased in grazed plots. 4. Tall fescue was dominated about 70-80% at the third harvest year, in the plot of both grazing and cutting system. 5. The percentage of ladino clover was slightly increased in grazed plot compared with cutting plots. However those of alfalfa and red clover were not influenced by grazing and cutting system.

The competition relationship between orchardgrass(Docflis glomerutu L. cv; Potomac) and red clover (Trifnlium prurense L. cv; Kenland) was investigated under the pure and mixed swards. Each species were grown in intra- and interspecific competition in pots and fields for 2-years. Intra- and interspecific competition were evaluated by calculating traditional methods; expected yield, relative yield total(RYT), aggressivity and compensation index(CI), and shoot and root dry matter production in the orchadgrass(ffi) pure, red clover(RC) pure and orchardgrdss(W)-red clover(RC) mixed sward. The results obtained were summarized as follows: Compared to OG and RC pure swards, the shoot and root dry maaer(DM) yield of OG-RC mixed sward were higher and more deeply rooted under the soil than those of OG and RC pure sward. Also, the number of tillen per plant of OG in the OG-RC mixed sward was less than that of OG pure sward, but that of RC in the OGRC mixed sward was more than that of RC pure sward. OG-RC mixed sward were evaluated as a productive sward type compared to OG and RC pure swards in that actual yield was higher than expect yield and that relative yield total(RYT), and compensation index(C1) were high. As mentioned above, compared to intraspecific competition as a OG and RC pure sward, interspecific competition as a OG-RC mixed sward was evaluated to productive type under the ffi and RC species utilization

1. Dry matter intake was significantly increased above the 30% red clover plant composition (p<0.05) as compared with 100% orchardgrass plant composition. However, there was a significant positive correlation (p<0.05) between the content of CP and dry matter intake, and was a significant negative correlation (p<0.05) between the content of NDF and dry matter intake. 2. Dry matter digestibility was significantly increased with the increase of red clover plant composition as compared with 100% orchardgrass plant composition (p<0.05). Digestible dry matter intake was significantly increased above the 20% red clover plant composition (p<0.05) as compared with 100% orchardgrass plant composition. However, there was a significant positive correlation (p<0.05) between the content of CP and digestible dry matter intake, and was a significant negative correlation (p<0.01) between the content of NDF and digestible dry matter intake. 3. Preference of herbage samples tended to markedly increased with the increase of red clover plant composition.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of the mixed rates of endophyte-he and -infected seed on the endophyte fkquency, dry matter yield and forage quality of tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) at the Experimental Field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute, Suweon, from 1993 to 1994. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Endophyte frequency was increased with mixed rates of higher endophyte-infected seed, however, it was not different between mixed rates of endophyte-free and -infected seed. DM yield of tall fescue was not different between mixed rates of endophyte-fke and -infected seed, and CP, NDF, ADF and IVDMD contents of forage quality were not influenced by mixed rates of endophyte-he and -infected seed. However, the weed contents were slightly increased with high level of endophyte-free seed. The results demonstrated that endophyk-fke tall fescue did not seem to be greatly weak under poor conditions, if the weed contents were slightly increase.
