Relationships of Physiologieal Activity and Anatomical Structure to the Wilting Phenomena in Rice Plant 1. Reappearance of the Wilting Phenomena concerning to Physiological Aspects and Environment (수도품종의 위고현상과 생리 및 형태해부학적 구조와의 관련성에 관한 연구)

  • In 1976, a newly released rice variety, Yushin, was planted in 300,000 ha of the 533,000 ha of cultivated total hecterage with new rice varieties. High productivity and quality were achieved by farmers around country. However, the wilting phenomena of Yushin occured in some regions where were employed poor cultural management, and flowed sewage into the paddy field from industrial factories. This study was identified some factors for the wilting phenomena of Yushin rice variety in morphological and physiological aspects. The Yushin variety showed greater internode elongation on low part of the stems that close related to lodge at heavier nitrogen levels, excessive number of spikelets per unit leaf blade weight i.e. higher sink/source ratio, and greater consumption of respiratory substrate by increased respiration rate of rice plant as compared with those of Tongil rice variety. In physilogical aspects, the Yushin variety was significantly declined root development and root activities under heavy nitrogen conditions. Yushin rice variety was decreased $K_2$O/N ratio, carbohydrate content in stem of rice plant, and physiological root activities specially in low light intensity, 50% light interception plots. Therefore, above factors were mainly promoted the wilting phenomena of Yushin rice variety.

Effect of Gamma Irradiation on the Physiological Characteristics of Garlic Bulbs During Storage (감마선조사가 저장중 마늘의 생리적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was intended to investigate the physiological effect of gamma irradiation at 50, 100 and 500 Gy on the garlic bulbs stored at low temperature of $3\;{\pm}\;1\;^{\circ}C$ and a relative humidity of 70-80%, and room temperature of $12\;{\pm}\;5\;^{\circ}C$ and a relative humidity of 75-85%, respectively for 10 months. Irradiation treatment stimulated temporary the respiration of garlic, which was greatly affected by storage conditions later. Sprouting of garlic was effectively inhibited in the all irradiated and low temperature groups until 10 months of storage, while the nonirradiated and 50 Gy groups were partially rooted around the 4th month after storage under both conditions. Weight loss and spoilage were shown to be little affected by irradiation until the nonirradiated garlic sprouted, and at the latter stage of storage period, the optimum dose of irradiation showed a significant effect on the reduction of weight loss and spoilage in stored garlic. It was also found that irradiation for sprout inhibition did not influence the firmness of garlic cloves.

The Characteristics of REM Sleep-Dependent Obstructive Sleep Apnea and NREM Sleep-Dependent Obstructive Sleep Apnea (렘수면 의존성 수면무호흡증과 비렘수면 의존성 수면무호흡증의 특징)

  • Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder that is characterized by repetitive collapse or partial collapse of the upper airway during sleep in spite of ongoing effort to breathe. It is believed that OSA is usually worsened in REM sleep, because muscle tone is suppressed during REM sleep. However, many cases showed a higher apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) during NREM sleep than during REM sleep. We aimed here to determine the characteristics of REM sleep-dependent OSA (REM-OSA) and NREM sleep-dependent OSA (NREM-OSA). Methods: Five hundred sixty polysomnographically confirmed adult OSA subjects were studied retrospectively. All patients were classified into 3 groups based on the ratio between REM-AHI and NREM-AHI. REM-OSA was defined as REM-AHI/NREM-AHI > 2, NREM-OSA as NREM-AHI/REM-AHI > 2, and the rest as sleep stage-independent OSA (IND-OSA). In addition to polysomnography, questionnaires related to subjective sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, and emotion were completed. Chi-square test, ANOVA, and ANCOVA were performed. Results: There was no age difference among subgroups. The REM-OSA group was comprised of large proportions of mild OSA and female OSA patients. These patients experienced poor sleep and more negative emotions than other two groups. The AHI and oxygen desaturation index (ODI) were lowest in REM-OSA. Sleep efficiency and N3 percentage of REM-OSA were higher than in NREM-OSA. The percentage of patients who slept in a supine position was higher in REM-OSA than other subgroups. IND-OSA showed higher BMI and larger neck circumference and abdominal circumference than REM-OSA. The patients with IND-OSA experienced more sleepiness than the other groups. AHI and ODI were highest in IND-OSA. NREM-OSA presented the shortest total sleep time and the lowest sleep efficiency. NREM-OSA showed shorter sleep latency and REM latency and higher percentage of N1 than those of REM-OSA and the highest proportion of those who slept in a lateral position than other subgroups. NREM-OSA revealed the highest composite score on the Horne and ${\ddot{O}}stberg$ questionnaire. With increased AHI severity, the numbers of apnea and hypopnea events during REM sleep decreased, and the numbers of apnea and hypopnea events during NREM sleep increased. The results of ANCOVA after controlling age, sex, BMI, NC, AC, and AHI showed the lowest sleep efficiency, the highest AHI in the supine position, and the highest percentage of waking after sleep onset in NREM-OSA. Conclusion: REM-OSA was associated with the mild form of OSA, female sex, and negative emotions. IND-OSA was associated with the severe form of OSA. NREM-OSA was most closely related to position and showed the lowest sleep efficiency. Sleep stage-dependent characteristics could provide better understanding of OSA.

Changes of Fruit Quality and Reduction of Physiological Disorders during Shelf-life in Early-season Pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) Fruits Treated with Aminoethoxyvinylglycine (Aminoethoxyvinylglycine 처리에 따른 조생종 배 유통기간 중 품질변화 및 생리장해 경감)

  • We investigated the effect of preharvest spray of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) on the fruit quality and incidence of physiological disorders during shelf-life of 'Hanareum' and 'Wonhwang' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai). AVG applications (0, 75, 150 and $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) made 30 days before anticipated harvest of respective cultivar. AVG did not influence the fruit development and quality parameters including starch content, soluble solids and acidity at harvest time in two pear cultivars although the flesh firmness of the fruits treated with $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG were higher than that of control in 'Hanareum' pear. Among the three AVG concentrations, only $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG showed effectiveness on maintaining flesh firmness in 'Hanareum' pear during shelf-life. Meanwhile, competitive high flesh firmness was attained in 'Wonhwang' pear treated with $150mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG (27.7 N) and $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG (28.2 N) when compared with untreated control (17.8 N) during 21 days of shelf-life at $25^{\circ}C$. AVG did not cause any significant difference at skin color development relative to control in two pear cultivars. AVG decreased ethylene production and respiration rate at $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ level in two pear cultivars during the entire shelf-life. During shelf-life, low incidence of physiological disorders including internal and core browning and mealiness were attained in the fruits treated at $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG in two cultivars when we compared with the untreated control.

제한적 열풍처리에 따른 조생 감귤의 저장중 품질특성 변화

  • 감귤의 수확후 저장, 유통과정에서 부패 억제 및 약제 후숙처리 대체 효과를 얻기 위하여 환경친화적 방법으로서 제한적 열처리 기술의 적용 가능성을 확인하고자, 제주 서귀포산 조생종 온주 감귤의 열풍(hot air)처리에 따른 저장중 품질특성 변화를 살펴보았다. 상처가 없는 일정한 크기(약 120 g 내외)의 건전 과실을 선별한 후, 45$^{\circ}C$에서 2, 4, 6시간 동안 열풍을 가한 다음 5$^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 냉각하였다. 충분히 냉각시킨 과실을 통기성 천공 LDPE 필름에 포장하여 5$^{\circ}C$에서 3주, 18$^{\circ}C$에서 1 주간 저장하면서 생리적, 이화학적, 관능적 특성변화를 측정하였다. 열풍처리 직후 초기 호흡률은 처리구 모두 무처리구와 비교하여 높았으나 처리시간과는 유의적 상관성이 없었고, 저장중 처리구 감귤의 호흡률은 감소하여 21일째는 무처리구와 유사한 수준을 나타내었다. 과실내 기체조성은 처리구간에 차이를 보이지 않았으나 저장 21일부터는 저장온도 상승에 따라 $O_2$는 다소 감소하고 $CO_2$는 증가하는 양상을 보였다. 또한 과즙의 pH, 산도, 당 함량은 열처리에 의해 거의 영향을 받지 않았으며, 과실의 생체 중량감소율과 경도에서도 처리구간의 유의적인 차이를 구분할 수 없었다. 과피 표면색은 저장중 초기에 비해 다소 붉은 색으로 변하였으나, 6시간 처리구에서는 비교적 자은 노란색을 유지하였다. 한편 부패과 발생률에 있어서는 4시간 처리구가 축부병 등에 의한 짓무름 현상과 곰팡이 발생정도, 검은 썩음병에 따른 흑변 정도에서 저장중 가장 낮은 수준을 나타내었다. 그러나 관능적 평가에서는 열풍처리구와 무처리구 사이에서의 유의적인 차이를 발견할 수 없었다. 결과적으로 45$^{\circ}C$, 4시간이상의 제한적 열풍처리는 조생종 온주 감귤의 저장중 부패과 발생률을 현저히 감소시킴으로서 수확후 품질유지에 효과적인 열처리 조건임을 확인할 수 있었다.

부지화 감귤의 저장 품질특성에 미치는 중온처리 효과

  • 시설재배 만감류인 부지화 감귤의 수확후 저장유통시 부패 감소 및 상품성 제고를 위하여 환경친화적 전처리방법으로서 중온처리의 적용 가능성을 확인하고자, 제주 서귀포산 부지화(한라봉)감귤의 열수 및 열풍 처리에 따른 저장중 품질특성 변화를 살펴보았다. 표면상처가 없는 일정 크기의 건전 과실을 선별한 후, 각각 52$^{\circ}C$에서 2분(52-2m), 6$0^{\circ}C$에서 20초(60-20s) 동안 열수에 침지하거나 45$^{\circ}C$에서 4시간(45-4h), 8시간(45-8h) 동안 열풍을 가한 다음 5$^{\circ}C$에서 냉각 건조하였다. 충분히 냉각된 과실을 통기성 천공 LDPE 필름에 포장하여 5"C에서 21일, 18$^{\circ}C$에서 7일간 저장하면서 생리, 이화학, 관능적 특성을 측정하였다. 중온처리 직후 초기 호흡률은 처리구 모두 무처리구와 비교하여 다소 높았으나, 저장중 처리구 감귤의 호흡률은 감소하여 21일째는 무처리구와 동일한 수준을 나타내었다. 과실내 기체조성은 저장기간 및 처리구간에 차이를 보이지 않았으나 21일부터는 저장온도 전환에 따라 $CO_2$가 다소 증가하는 양상을 보였다. 과실의 pH, 산도, 경도는 중온처리에 따른 유의적 차이를 구분할 수 없었으나, 고형분 함량과 생체 중량감소율은 열풍처리구에서 다소 높게 유지되었다. 과피 표면색 역시 열풍처리구 (45-8h)가 다른 것에 비해 저장중 짙게 나타났으나 열수처리구에서는 가시적 변화를 발견할 수 없었다. 한편 부패과 발생률에 있어서 열수처리구가 축부병 등에 의한 짓무름 현상 및 곰팡이 발생정도를 가장 낮게 나타내었고, 관능검사에서도 열수처리구가 변색, 시듦, 광택 등의 외관 품질항목에서 유의적으로 우수하게 평가되었다. 결과적으로 중온 열수처리는 부지화 김귤의 수확후 저장유통중 부패과 발생률을 감소시키고 외관품질을 유지하는데 효과적인 전처리방법임을 확인할 수 있었다. 있었다.

Effect of 1-Methylcyclopropene(1-MCP) on the Postharvest Life and Fruit Quality of Cucumber (1-Methylcyclopropene(1-MCP) 처리가 오이의 신선도 유지에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of 1-MCP(1-methylcyclopropene) on the postharvest life and fruit quality of cucumber 'Baekdadaki' were investigated. Cucumber were held at room and cold chamber($10^{\circ}C$) treated with several concentrations of 1-MCP. Physico-chemical characteristics such as fresh weight and firmness were greatly varied during storage, and the treatment with I-MCP(500ppb) showed the minimal loss of the values at harvest. The peel b value representing a senescence process was higher investigated in 1-MCP(250 and 1,000ppb treatment, and led to the apparent yellowing and softening after cold storage for 15 days. 1-MCP(500ppb) showed lower decay rate and better marketability of cucumber than other treatments after cold storage for 15 days. The respiration rate was higher found in cucumber treated with 1-MCP(250ppb) than in other treatment. Ethylene evolution was most detected in cucumber treated with 1-MCP(1000ppb) after room storage for 6 days. 1-MCP did not affect the production of ethylene in cucumber during room and cold storage.

  • (1) Relatively active polyphenol oxidase influence was seen at $0{\circ}C$, and the optimal pH level for the enzyme from the seeds of a small type sweet pepper Zairaisisi is 6.5. (2) The starting stage of the brown coloration with low-temperature injuries showed a strong activity of polyphenol oxidase, and the activity drops to 0 as the entire seed became brownish. (3) The browning effect with enzyme solution of polyphenol extracts suggested that the brown coloration continues in vitro even if polyphenol oxidase activity is nil. (4) Although cytochrome oxidase activity dropped when an abnormality occurrs in electron pathways of respiration at the starting stage of the browning with low temperature injuries, there was no marked influence of it on the total respiration, indicating the fact that polyphenol oxidase can take place of terminal oxidase in the compensatory respiration process.

The Changes of Plasma Atrial Natriuretic Peptide Concentrations During Waking and Sleep in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (폐쇄성 수면 무호흡증후군 환자에서 각성시와 수면중의 혈중 Atrial Natriuretic Peptide 농도 변화)

  • Objectives : Patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome(OSAS) often complain of nocturnal enuresis. There are a few reports that OSAS patients have altered renal function, and there are some evidences that the increased release of atrial natriuretic peptide(ANP) may be involved in the pathogenesis of nocturnal urinary symptoms of OSAS patients. In this study, we measured plasma ANP concentrations during waking and sleep in OSAS patients and normal controls to investigate whether there were differences of ANP concentrations between OSAS patients and normal subjects. Methods : 27 patients with OSAS and 10 normal subjects were studied. All subjects underwent a full-night polysomnographic study. Venous blood samples were separately drawn during waking and sleep. Plasma ANP concentrations were measured using radioimmunoassay. Results : In OSAS patients, ANP concentrations during sleep($122.9\;{\pm}\;29.9pg/ml$) were significantly higher than ANP concentrations during waking($60.2\;{\pm}\;5.8pg/ml$)(p < 0.05). However, in normal subjects, there was no significant difference between ANP concentrations during waking($59.2\;{\pm}\;5.7pg/ml$) and sleep($69.6\;{\pm}\;3.0pg/ml$)(p > 0.05). There was no significant difference of ANP concentrations during waking between OSAS patients($60.2\;{\pm}\;5.8pg/ml$) and normal controls($59.2\;{\pm}\;5.7pg/ml$)(p > 0.05), and also there was no significant difference during sleep between OSAS patients($122.9\;{\pm}\;29.9pg/ml$) and normal subjects($69.6\;{\pm}\;3.0pg/ml$)(p > 0.05). Plasma ANP concentrations during sleep showed significant positive correlations with apnea index(r = 0.3846, p < 0.05) and respiratory disturbance index(r = 0.3939, p < 0.05) in OSAS patients. Conclusion : These data suggest that, in OSAS patients, plasma ANP concentrations during sleep are significantly higher than plasma ANP concentrations during waking, and there is a positive correlation between the plasma ANP concentration during sleep and the severity of sleep apnea.

A Comparison of Postharvest Physiology and Storability of Paprika Fresh-Cut Made from Disordered and Normal Fruits (착색단고추 생리장해과와 정상과의 수확 후 생리 및 신선편이의 저장성 비교)

  • The study was conducted to compare the postharvest physiology and storability of fresh cut paprika fruits classified by normal, blossom end rot(BER), and misshapen (or knots) fruit. Some disordered paprika fruits that were produced frequently during high temperature season in highland, were sorted out to non-marketable products. These fruits are mostly wasted, but some of them may be used for fresh cut. The respiration rate of fresh cut paprika fruits was lower and ethylene production rate was higher in normal fruits than in disordered fruits, but there was no significant difference. The fresh-cut paprika fruits were stored in MAP conditions at $4^{\circ}C$, $9^{\circ}C$ and room temperature in 25 ${\mu}m$ and 50 ${\mu}m$ thickness ceramic film packaging. The fresh weight of fresh cut paprika fruits decreased below to 1.1% regardless of fruit types, but the fresh weight loss increased in thinner packaging materials and lower storage temperatures. There were not significant different carbon dioxide and oxygen contents in MAP of all fruit types, while $4^{\circ}C$ storage temperature treatment and 25 ${\mu}m$ thickness ceramic film treatment had lower carbon dioxide and higher oxygen contents. Moreover, the carbon dioxide and oxygen contents were changed rapidly at 9 days in $4^{\circ}C$ storage and at 6 days in $9^{\circ}C$ storage when the visual quality of fresh cut decreased dramatically. The ethylene concentration of packages was below 7 ${\mu}l{\cdot}l^{-1}$ in all treatments during storage, while the treatments of thinner packaging material and lower storage temperature showed lower ethylene concentration. The fresh cut of disordered fruits showed less visual quality than normal fruit treatment in both $4^{\circ}C$ and $9^{\circ}C$ storage temperatures, but there was no significant difference. The value of $4^{\circ}C$ treatment that measured 12 days in storage was higher than $9^{\circ}C$ treatment that measured 9 days in storage. The results suggest that the disordered fruits may be used to fresh cut product without any concerns that they will decreased the value of commodities more quickly than the fresh cut made of marketable paprika fruits. As the fresh cut paprika fruits stored in MAP condition, the more effective storage temperature is $4^{\circ}C$ that may have induced chilling injury a whole fruit of the paprika.
