  • The purpose of this study was to establish blood reference values for miniature pigs from various growth ages before pre-puberty. 12 miniature pigs from two swine farms were sampled by jugular venipuncture. Routine hematological and biochemical determinations were performed using whole blood and serum. For the variables examined in each age group the means and the standard deviations were calculated. In hematological values, there are significant changes (p<0.05) in RBC, hematocrit and platelet values in each group. In RBC and hematocrit values, 4-week group shows the lowest level, whereas in platelet values, 4-week group shows the highest level. In biochemical values, there are significant chnges (p<0.05) in glucose and GGT in each group, and in other biochemical values there are no significant changes during growing periods. The values presented here may be useful for knowing the normal values for miniature pigs and also screening the normal pigs in the early days of their life and during the developemental stages.

  • Serum chemical values were determined in blood samples obtained from 179 normal, healthy Jindo dogs of both sexes that ranged in age from 3 months to 10 years. Female dogs had higher total protein and albumin values than their male counterparts. Age-related differences were detected for serum proteins, inorganic phosphate, glucose, and blood urea nitrogen levels. The GGT level Was within the normal range in dogs.

  • Nutritional adequacy of growing Thoroughbred horses raised in an alternate feeding system - grazing during late spring through late fall and stable feeding for the rest of seasons - was assessed by determining vitamin E and trace mineral levels in the serum and blood chemistry related to nutrition and health. During the stable feeding in winter and early spring, 50 growing female horses were fed concentrates (1.4% of their body weight), grass hay (0.62%) and alfalfa hay (0.37%). For the grazing period, the same horses were fed supplementary concentrates (1.1%) during late spring through early summer, and concentrates (1.1%) and alfalfa hay (0.5%) during late summer through late fall. Blood samples were collected before grazing in early spring, and during grazing in early summer through late fall. Serum vitamin E, BUN, GTP, total bilirubin and direct bilirubin levels were increased (P<0.01) by grazing compared to those measured before the initiation of grazing. Horses had lower (P<0.01) serum Fe contents in early summer than in late fall or in time of stable feeding. Stable feeding increased (P<0.01) serum Cu content compared to grazing in both early summer and late fall. In late fall, serum Zn level increased (P<0.01) compared to that found in the other seasons. Blood glucose and creatinine levels decreased (P<0.01) after grazing. Results indicate that supplementations of some minerals and vitamin E are not always necessary in diets for growing horses and should be done after careful evaluation of diets with regard to concentrations and biological availability of minerals.

  • Urea sensors, prepared by immobilizing urease on ammonium-selective membrane electrodes doped with nonactin, can show interference from several ionic species present in blood samples (e.g., sodium, potassium, and endogenous ammonium ions). This interference problem does not arise from the immobilized biocatalytic reaction but rather from the innate response of the base transducer to ionic species in the sample. In this work, the use of calibrators containing adequate amounts of ionic species is examined to reduce errors caused by endogenous ionic interferences with blood urea measurements. Simultaneous measurements of the interfering species with additional sensors and subsequent substractions of these values from the urea electrode signals are also described. It is shown that the use of a potassium-selective electrode with an adequate calibrator system greatly enhances the accuracy of the urea sensor measurements.

  • cows, in order to suggest a means for the improvement of milk production. A total of 30 Holstein cows (3rd to 5th of parity) were used and assigned to two groups according This study investigated blood biochemical values between high and low yielding dairy to milk production levels at 15, 30, 60 and 90 days postpartum. Milk production of group A was less than an average of 27 kg/day and that of group B was an average of 30 kg/day. Blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture from each cow six times at 15 days before the anticipated calving date, within 12 hours postpartum (0 days) and at 15, 30, 60 and 90 days after calving. In serum mineral concentrations, group B was consistently higher than group A in both Mg and Ca. Inorganic phosphorus concentrations showed a little fluctuation between the groups at antepartum and at postpartum, but group B was significantly higher than group A at 15 and 30 days after calving (p < 0.05). In serum biochemical values cholesterol concentrations were consistently higher in group B except at 0 days. BUN and glucose concentrations did not differ between the groups. The concentration of vitamin A of group B was significantly higher than group A at 15 days before the anticipated calving date and at 15 days postpartum (p < 0.01), but at 30, 60 and 90 days postpartum vitamin A concentration of both groups were similar. Vitamin E concentration did not differ between the groups during the experimental period. Results of this study suggest that raising the levels of Mg, Ca, Pi and vitamin A in serum would be effective in increasing milk production of low producing cows.

  • A new technique combining forced-feeding and dorsal aorta cannulation was developed to monitor concentration of nutritions in the blood circulation and their metabolites in rainbow trout. To study the effect of dorsal aorta cannulation on stress, 30 rainbow trout (523$\pm$5.4 g; Mean$\pm$SD) were divided into 6 groups of 5 individuals each. A group was anesthetized and blood samples were taken at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24 or 48 h after dorsal aorta cannulation. Hematocrit peaked at 6 h and returned to 0 values by 12 h after dorsal aorta cannulation. Plasma cortisol and glucose concentrations also peaked at 6 h and returned to 0 values by 48 h after dorsal aorta cannulation. Based on the plasma cortisol and glucose concentrations, the rainbow trout recovered from the operation of dorsal aorta cannulation within 48 h. To compare the patterns of plasma free amino acid concentrations after force-feeding in the fish with dorsal aorta cannulation, 5 dorsal aorta cannulated individuals (511$\pm$6.2 g) were kept in a cage. After 48 h starvation, they were anesthetized and blood samples were taken at 0, 4, 8, 12, 24, 36 or 48 h after forced-feeding. The concentration of all plasma free amino acids, except isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan, also peaked at 4 h and returned to 0 values by 24 h after feeding. The combined technique allows forced-feeding and repeated sampling of blood in rainbow trout with minimum stress.

  • There have been several case reports of neurological manifestations in pediatrics as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection in children is being increased. We report a case of a 4-year-old boy who presented febrile seizure during follow-up in a negative pressure isolation room after confirmed coronavirus disease 2019, which has not yet been reported in Korea. He has no symptoms other than fever. The seizure was controlled after one dose of intravenous lorazepam, and there was no respiratory support during the hospitalization. He was discharged 12 days later without neurological sequelae.

  • This study was performed to estimate the clinical signs and changes of biochemical parameters in rats with hepatic injury induced by the administration of 2, 2'-azobis(2- amidinopropane)dihydrochloride (AAPH) . Minor behavioral change, brittleness of skin hair and decreased volume of water and feed intake were observed in ra% 2 hours after AAPH administration compared to control group. Concentration of serum albumin showed lower than that of control group. However, concentration of total bilirubin has shown higher than that of control group. As time goes on, . serum LDH activity increased significantly compared to control group, but senun CPK activity did not change compared to control group. Passive hemanglutination of $\alpha $-fetoprotein was negative in all the treaDent groups and control group.
