  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of education for hemodialysis patient with a family caregiver on self-care practice and on blood biochemical parameters. A nonequivalent control group pretest and posttest design has been employed for analysis. Among hemodialysis patients in C university hospital located in Daegu, 56 subjects, 28 in experimental and 28 in control group, participated in the study from April to May in 2015. The experimental group whose family caregiver participated in education for hemodialysis patient reported significant differences in self-care practice (t=3.36, p=.001) and serum potassium level (t=2.78, p=.007) from the control group whose family caregiver did not participate. Considering positive effects of family education, we suggest education programs incorporating family caregivers be used as an effective nursing intervention.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of blood pressures, hematological and blood biochemical properties according to the degree of obesity based on differential combinations of BMI in health checkup examinees. Study subjects were 3,731 adults of 20 years and over (2,312 males, 1,419 females), not recognized as taking medicines for or having cardiovascular diseases, who underwent health package check-up at the Korea Association of Health Promotion, Daejeon Branch from Jan. 2007 to Dec. 2009. As a results, the mean values of SBP, DBP, TG, TC, LDL-C, ALT, AST, GGT, ALP were significantly increased with higher level of BMI, but the HDL-C was significantly decreased with higher level of BMI. On correlation of BMI with various factors, the BMI was positively correlated with SBP, DBP, TG, TC, LDL-C and GGT, while the HDL-C was negatively correlated. Based on the result of ordinal logistic regression analysis, the risk ratio to the abnormal level of SBP, DBP, TG, ALT and GGT were significantly increased as BMI increased.

  • In this study, we investigated to elevate the modulatory effect of flavonoid(fustin, sulfuretin, 10 mg/kg) which was isolated from Rhus verniciflua Stokes(RVS) in male Sprague-Dawley rats for 2 weeks on the toxicity of paraquat. In the flavonoids pretreated groups, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, malondialdehyde and alkaline phosphatase activity in serum and malondialdehyde, alkaline phosphatase activity and collagen in lung tissue which was induced paraquat toxicity were slightly decrease compared to the normal group. In the lung tissue of flavonoids pretreated groups, malodialdehyde value, G-6-phosphatase activity and collagen synthesis were recovered to tile normal values and alkaline phosphatase activity was increased. From these results, we concluded that flavonoids which were isolated from RVS is an effective agent to inhibit the pulmonary and internal toxicities and hence we concluded that acitive components of fustin and sulfuretin which were isolated from RVS might be removed free radicals induced by paraquat.

(Ma et al., 1995; Khattak and Hafeez, 1996). • A unicellular algae, Chlorella vulgaris(CV), was used as a biological response modifier. The effect of CV on forced swimming test and blood biochemical parameters related to fatigue was investigated. Blood urea nitrogen(BUN); creatine kinase(CK); lactic dehydrogenase(LDH); glucose(Glc); total protein(TP); and albumin were determined. CV was orally administered to mice in the range of 0.05 to 0.15 g/kg/day. A forced swimming test results on 3 and 7 day after administration of CV, showed that immobility time was decreased in the CV-administered group(0.15 g/kg). In addition, the contents of BUN in the blood serum were decreased in CV-fed group. The contents of CK and LDH were tended to decrease, but not statistically significant. The plasma Glc level was increased in CV-fed groups(0.05 and 0.1 g/kg) compared to control group. It had no effect on the elevation of TP and albumin level. The results indicate that CV could improve physical stamina.

  • In this study, we intended to evaluate the modulatory effects of natural products, ${\beta}-carotene$, aloesin and semiessential amino acid, taurine on the toxicitiy of paraquat. In the taurine treated groups, serem glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (s-GOT), serem glutamic pyruvic transaminase (s-GPT). blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, malondialdehyde (MDA), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in serum and MDA, ALP activity, collagen in lung tissue were decreased to the normal values. In the aloesin treated groups, s-GPT, BUN, creatinine, MDA level in serum were decreased to the normal values significantly. In the ${\beta}-carotene$ treated group, only s-GPTactivity was reduced to the normal values. In the lung tissue of taurine treated groups, MDA value, G-6-phosphatase activity and collagen synthesis were recovered to the normal valuse and ALP activity was increase about 40%. From these results, we concluded that taurine is an effective agent to inhibit the pulmonary and internal organs toxicities induced by paraquat and the inhibition effects of taurine are due to remove free radicals directly.

  • Enzyme activity changes in rat blood as biochemical indicator useful for evaluating exposure dose were experimentally studied. The experimental results obtained are as follows: 1) Alkaline phosphatase activities increased in the blood serum until 24 hours after 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 2 and 4Gy irradiation and its activities returned normal condition after 72 hours of post-irradiation. Creatine kinase activities increased in the blood serum until 72 hours after 2 and 4Gy irradiation but any significant activity changes were not detected after 0.1, 0.25Gy irradiation. 2) Malate dehydrogenase activities did not reveal available changes after 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 Gy irradiation and lactate dehynrogenase activities decreased in the blood serum after 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 Gy irradiation.3) Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase activity changes were detected in the blood serum after 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 2, 4Gy(0.1Gy/min.) and GOT activities increased after 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5, 7Gy(0.5Gy/sec.). Any acid phosphatase activities were detected in the blood serum after 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 2, 4Gy(0.1Gy/min.) and 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5, 7Gy(0.5 Gy/sec.) irradiation. Potentially some of these enzymes can be used as indicator protein for radiation injury. Futher investigation is needed to find better biochemical indicators utilizing recent know-ledge and techniques of biochemistry.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the comparison of blood biochemical parameters, physical activity, stress, and sleep management between obese and non-obese subjects according to the body mass index (BMI). Methods: Data were collected from February 1 to May 31 in 2012. This research involved 403 subjects who visited an obesity clinic in Korea. They were divided into 4 groups: normal weight 100 ($18.5{\leq}BMI$ < $23.0kg/m^2$), overweight 100 ($23.0{\leq}BMI$ < $25.0kg/m^2$), obese 100 ($25.0{\leq}BMI$ < $30.0kg/m^2$), and severely obese 103 ($BMI{\geq}30.0kg/m^2$). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 19.0. Results: There were significant differences on the SGPT (F=22.98, p<.001), SGOT (F=12.91, p<.001), creatinine (F=4.82, p=.003), triglyceride (F=20.17, p<.001), and total cholesterol (F=6.55, p<.001) among the subjects according to the BMI. There was no significant association between frequency of physical activity according to the BMI. There was significant association regarding the management of sleep (F=5.13, p=.002), but no significant association regarding the management of stress. Overall, there were significant association regarding the management of stress and sleep (F=3.79, p=.011) among the groups. Conclusion: The result of this study suggests that it is possible to use the information as basic data for educational and nursing intervention programs based on the BMI.
