  • This study intended to draw some suggests for the development of mathematics teachers' expertise through the comparison research of pre-service and in-service teachers' PCK about questioning in elementary mathematics class. For this purpose, questionnaire survey was conducted to some pre-service and in-service teachers about the PCK concerning the way how questioning during mathematics class. This survey revealed the following implications. First, from the perspective of mathematics classroom, it is still more important the practical knowledge about how to teach which is evolutionally developed passing through the experience and currier of teaching than theoretical knowledge itself. Comparing the teachers' PCK about the two related knowledge types of mathematics contents, in case of procedural knowledge related PCK it was more asked of teachers' expertise than the case of conceptual knowledge related PCK. Thirdly, in case of learners' incorrect answer, for the desirable teaching it should be a questioning focused on whether there being or not the systematic among the learners' incorrect answer, and in case of appreciating the learners' understanding about the presently taught contents the questioning should be constructed considering the relevant contents early learned.

  • What is good instruction? The term "instruction" means the essential activity of school education, a precondition for good school, and the starting point of reforming school education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning of "good instruction" by examining the difference of perception between in-service teachers and pre-service teachers who encompass the viewpoint of both teacher and student using open-ended questionnaires asking the type of instruction that they have to avoid and the undesirable instruction. This study was carried out with 150 teachers who were working in the schools and 160 students who were in college of education to be teacher in the future. Collected data was analyzed using the QSR Nvivo qualitative program. The findings of this study indicates the followings: First, the most undesirable class cited by in-service teachers was the class that applies uniform instructional strategy, followed by class based on directions instruction, unsystematic class, class characterized by lack of teaching competency, class that emphasizes test scores and competition, class that are not interactive enough, class that does not consider the level of students, class in which students are not respected, class that have poor educational environment, and the class in which little support is provided. Second, the most undesirable class cited by pre-service teachers was the class that applies uniform instructional strategy, followed by unsystematic class, class characterized by lack of teaching competency, class based on directions instruction, class in which students are not respected, class that emphasizes test scores and competition, class that does not consider the level of students, class that are not interactive enough, class that have poor educational environment, and the class in which little support is provided. Third, this study examined the difference of perception between in-service teachers and pre-service teachers toward the undesirable class that they have to avoid. In terms of the integrated rank that is common among in-service teachers and pre-service teachers, the most undesirable class that they have to avoid was the class that applies uniform instructional strategy, unsystematic class, class based on directions instruction, and class characterized by lack of teaching competency. The findings of this study may be used as a basis for in-service teachers to reflect on their professionalism of instruction that they provide and examine the attitude of students toward instruction, while providing a practical guideline for pre-service teachers to design and ensure systematic instruction in the future.

  • Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) has been regarded as an indication of science teachers' professionalism. The purpose of this study was to analyze topic-specific PCK of pre-service and in-service science teachers, comparatively. For this purpose, we developed an analytic framework for explicitly documenting science teacher' PCK and applied the framework for analyzing the difference within the same topic and with two different topics. Findings are as follows: (1) With the same topic, there was considerable difference between pre-service and in-service teachers in the components of PCK, not to mention individual difference. (2) In case of two different topics, we did not recognize a tendency of change in PCK, but remarkable differences in PCK were identified between two different topics. This study affirmed the topic specificity of PCK, and discussed a possibility of employing PCK analytic framework and its profile as one of the tools that could be used to develop and assess teachers' professionalism.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate mathematics teachers' mathematical content knowledge about quadratic curves. Three components of mathematical knowledge are needed for teaching: (i) knowing school mathematics, (ii) knowing process of school mathematics, (iii) making connections between school mathematics and advanced mathematics. 24 mathematics teachers were asked to perform 10 questions based on mathematics curriculum. The results showed that mathematics teachers had some difficulties in conic section definitions and eccentricity definitions of ellipse and hyperbola. And they also got difficulty in Dandellin sphere proof of the equivalence of conic section definitions and quadratic curve definitions. Especially, no one answered correctly to the question about the definition of eccentricity. The ratio of correct answer for the question about constructing tangent lines of quadratic curves is less than that for the question about the applications of the properties of tangent lines. These findings suggests that it is needed that to provide plenty of opportunities to learn mathematical content knowledge in teacher education programs.

  • This article explores early childhood teachers' practices from bottom-up perspectives on the relationship between theory and practice. Results of the review of literature are as follows: 1) From top-down perspectives early childhood teachers' practices and their classroom behaviors have been traditionally defined within the framework of theories of child development, the notion of developmentally appropriate practice, and designed program models; 2) From bottom-up perspectives researchers have a focus on how teachers' practices lead theories and how they construct the act of teaching through reflective thinking; 3) empirical research on preservice and inservice teachers demonstrates that preservice teachers develop their own theories of teaching from their previously held assumptions, gained knowledge from preparation programs, and their individual experiences. It also shows that inservice teachers construct teaching through their implicit knowledge and the use of strategies to negotiate problems. Implications for future studies on teachers's practices are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mathematical belief of elementary school preservice teachers and elementary school teachers and to analyze their differences in mathematical belief. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, Elementary school preservice teachers generally regard the belief in the nature of mathematics as 'rules and procedures' and emphasize the 'process of inquiry' about the beliefs of learning mathematics. When comparing the beliefs according to gender, there is a significant difference only in the category of 'teacher instruction' among the beliefs of learning mathematics. Second, elementary school teachers generally regard the nature of mathematics as a 'inquiry process' and have a 'student-led' belief about the learning mathematics. There is no significant difference of the belief about the nature of mathematics and learning mathematics between the elementary school teachers by gender and majors. However, when comparing the mathematical beliefs according to educational level, there is a difference in beliefs about the nature of mathematics. Third, comparing the mathematical beliefs of elementary school preservice teachers and elementary school teachers, there is no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the 'rules and procedures' subcategories of the nature of mathematics, but there is a significant difference in 'inquiry process'.

  • This study analyzes the conceptual understanding of in-service and pre-service earth science teachers about the H-R diagrams and evolution of stars using conceptual status analysis categories. The results show that (a) many teachers use unscientific language in the Intelligibility range, (b) teachers are categorized in Low scientific inquiry ability related to graph creation and unscientific analogy for scientific concept which is hightly corelated to the possibility of misunderstanding in the teaching process, and (c) pre-service teachers lack the understanding of the secondary science curriculum. It is necessary to develop pre-service curriculum that can be applied to the school site. In the category of Plausibility range, (d) both groups understood the cosmological meaning of stellar evolution. However, pre-service teachers do not specifically explain the mechanism of a star. In the category of Fruitfulness range, in-service teachers come up with educational problems reflecting the academic characteristics of earth science and apply their knowledge to actual problem solving. On the other hand, pre-service teachers show high nonresponse ratio, they do not see the H-R diagram and the evolution of stars as a practical concept. In the analysis process, both groups are found to have many unscientific conceptions about the H-R diagram and evolution of stars. Therefore, it is suggested that caution be used in developing a professional development program of earth science teachers.

  • This qualitative research investigated how to improve preservice and in-service teacher education programs through in-depth interviews with 10 exemplary science teachers. Data from interviews were used to analyze how the teachers perceived current situations of teacher education and what they suggested as an improvement plan. In terms of preservice teacher education, exemplary teachers argued that teacher education programs should (1) ensure the teacher education program's identity and goals, (2) provide preservice teachers with practical knowledge by translating theory into practice, and (3) secure faculty members who majored in science education. In light of in-service education, the teachers contended that (1) teachers should acknowledge the continuing processes of their own professional development, (2) the content and method of in-service training should incorporate teachers' practical needs in the classroom, and (3) the teaching community should implement a clinical supervision to improve their classroom practices. The central role of teacher (re)education in a successful classroom reform is also discussed.
