  • Whangchangkumpyo(黃腸禁標 : forbidden mark of whangchangmok pine tree cutting) is not only a historical forestry material but also a valuable physical proof supporting historical facts recorded in written documents. This study, using 6 whangchangkumpyo's which have been discovered so far, has investigated a comprehensive value of kumpyo(禁標). For this investigation, the location, sine, inscription, discovery of them and how they were reported have been compared with what is recorded in written documents. A comparative analysis of whangchangkumpyo and its investigation have enabled the author to identify the distribution of high quality pine trees, the political and economic significance of kumsan(禁山) and bongsan(封山) at the time, changes in geographical names over time, bits of tracks from old road network. Finally, it is suggested in this study that the recognition of the value of whangchangkumpyo should be more encouraged and the protection of it should be necessary.

  • The face of the Seated Stone Buddha Korean Treasure No.84 of Sinboksa Templesite in Gangneung was contaminated with a glossy resin, spoiling its beauty. The contaminants covered the face, the forehead of the urna, to the bottom of the jaw. FT-IR analysis on a sample of the contaminants identified the substance as cyanoacrylate instant adhesive, which can normally be melted with acetone and removed with a swab. However, given that the surface of the statue was severely weathered from prolonged open-air exposure, alternative removal procedures were considered, to minimize the possibility of physical damage. After research, two removal procedures were utilized: one procedure involving poultices, which had been used to remove graffiti from the Samjeondobi Stele, and one procedure involving steam sterilization, which has been used to remove resin from pottery and porcelain. When both the poultices and steam sterilization were applied together, the resin was removed within twenty-four hours, without physical work using a swab.

  • This study is concerned with new excavation methods and techniques for fossil tracks/trackways and its application. Unlike the body fossils such as dinosaur skeletons and isolated bones, the Mesozoic vertebrate tracks and trackways including dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and birds are usually discovered in long-distance trackways. The trackways are also found in a large area of the bedding plane and preserved as two-dimensional and flat characteristic. New excavation methods for fossil footprints reflecting these characteristics have been designed to excavate fossil footprints preserved on wide bedding plane and applied to five excavation fossil tracksites. As a result of its application, the tracks and trackways of dinosaur, pterosaur, and bird were successfully excavated. And based on various excavation cases, the step-by-step process and details of the fossil footprints excavation was proposed.

  • A 42-year-old male was admitted because of an anterior neck injury due to accidental firing of a nail gun. On chest X-ray, the nail was stuck in the anterior neck, migrated to the chest, and then to the abdomen. Only the trachea was damaged, leaving no injury in the esophagus. The nail in the intestine was removed by colonoscopy. The patient showed complete recovery without complications after fasting and conservative treatment. We report this case with a literature review.

  • The results of investigations into marine incidents have become an important basis in determining not only possible causes, but also the extent of negligence between the perpetrator and victim. However, marine incidents occur under special circumstances i.e. the marine environment, and this leads to difficulties in identifying causes due to problems in scene preservation, reenactment and acquisition of witnesses. Given the aforementioned characteristic of marine incidents, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) has adopted mandatory regulations on the carriage of Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) and Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) for ships of a certain gross tonnage and upwards, so as to reflect recent developments in radio communication and marine technology. Adopted to provide an international standard for investigations and to promote cooperation, the Code of the International Standards and Recommended Practices for a Safety Investigation into a Marine Casualty or Marine Incident (Casualty Investigation Code) recommends member states to build capacity for analysis of VDR data. Against this backdrop, this paper presents methods for efficient investigations into the causes behind marine incidents based on data analysis of VDR, which serves as the black box of ships, as well as digital forensic techniques.

  • The goal of this paper is to set the research and development (R&D) strategic plan of Honam Sea Grant (HSG) program which is to secure the base technologies for the success of Jeollanamdo's policy projects in the area of maritime and fisheries. HSG's mission is to support science-based sustainable management, conservation and enhancement of Honam coastal and aquatic resources through research, extension and education. Firstly, 80 cases of Jeollanam-do's policy project and 48 cases of HSG's R&D project are compiled and classified into the five areas of maritime and fisheries. Secondly, typical key words are extracted from each five areas and assessed the inherent meanings of each key words using quarterly segmented meaning allocation techniques with 'intended for practical use', 'intended for theoretical use', 'intended for future', and 'intended for current'. Then, we proposed R&D strategic plan based on the evaluation results and, it's practical use is also discussed.

  • In order for preemptive response and prevention against disasters, it is necessary to systematically collect, preserve, manage, and utilize the information resources of records related with disaster safety. Therefore, this study analyzed the types and status of text-based document archives among the records information resources which were published and produced by the disaster safety-related institutions via online. Detail types analysis of disasters in document archives also was conducted. Based on filed interviews, the actual users' requirements for the disaster safety information archives are converged. The ultimate goal of this study is to establish a basis for building of disaster safety information archives by deriving improved management strategies of disaster safety records resources.

  • As the needs of library users change diversely along with the rapid developments and changes in society, libraries have gone beyond the traditional role of providing, gathering, organizing and preserving materials and information to provide various program services in culture, interests, and practicality that accommodate cultural and educational needs. Public libraries, in particular, are reflecting their role as the representative educational and cultural institutions of the community and following social changes to expand the role of libraries and manage various programs. This study aims to vitalize adult-targeted programs in representative Seoul libraries by understanding the current situation of the aforementioned programs through the past five years, and ran a survey on the satisfaction levels of those who are in charge of the programs and those who utilize the programs. The purpose of the study is to comprehensively analyze the improvements needed for running the programs and the demands of users in order to propose ways to activate library programs for adults.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify several factors necessary to the curriculum development of the archives and records management in Korea by analyzing archival programs of to Schools of Library and Information Science(SLIS) in the U.S.A. Name of the schools, programs and their degrees, credits, required and elective courses, practice, research, facilities, and SAA guidelines of graduate archival programs are compared by analyzing websites and the literature review. There are a few LIS schools that concentrate archival education and most of the archival programs don't cover all of the core archival knowledge suggested in the LIS schools. In conclusion, the core curriculum of archival science should include history and preservation of archives, archives and records management, information technology, management principles, practicum, and research/ thesis. And a lot of cooperated research and conversation between educational institutions and practical fields are required.

  • Recently, ubiquitous sensor network (USN) has been applied to many areas including environment monitoring. A few studies applied the USN to disaster prevention and emergency management, in particular, aiming to conserve cultural heritage. USN is an useful technology to do online real-time monitoring for the purpose of early detection of the fire which is a critical cause of damage and destruction of cultural heritages. It is necessary to online monitor the cultural heritages that human has a difficulty to access or their external appearance and beauty are important, by using the USN. However, there exists false warning from USN-based monitoring systems without human intervention. In this paper, we presented an alternative to resolve the problem by applying ontology. Our intelligent fire early detection systems for conserving cultural heritages are based on ontology and inference rules, and tested under laboratory environments.
