  • This paper presented the results of evaluation of artificially contaminated suspension insulators for transmission lines. The suspension insulators were contaminated with kaolin and clay which were included various amount of natural salt. The degree of contamination were evaluated by measuring equivalent salt deposit density(ESDD). Then, the leakage currents were measured as a function of applied voltage, degree of contamination, humidity.

  • Recently, polymer insulators that are used for high voltage applications have some advantages such as light weight, small size, vandalism resistance, hydrophobicity and easy making process. During outdoor service of polymer insulators, the surface of the insulating material is frequently subjected to moisture and contamination that lead to dry band arcing. Their tracking resistance, erosion resistance, end sealing and shed design are very important because dry band arcing causes degradation of polymer surface. In this paper, the tracking property of polymer suspension insulator for power transmission is investigated with CEA tracking wheel test. The diagnosis of insulator sample in tracking test has been analyzed by leakage current, STRI Guide, SEM, FTIR and thermal image.

A Study on the High Strength of porcelain insulators for transmission line (송전용 자기재 현수애자의 고강도 특성 연구)

  • In this study, porcelain insulator samples which have a different alumina composition were manufactured in order to test electrical and mechanical properties and make an analysis of the propagation phenomena of micro cracks on porcelain body. From XRD quantitative analysis the crystalline phases were different with alumina composition, sample C and D which have about 17wt% Corundum phase without the Cristobalite phase shows better electrical and mechanical properties than sample A and 8 which have the Cristobalite phase. In dielectrics test on porcelain samples with below 17wt% alumina composition, it was found that the amount of glass phase$(SiO_2)$have an main effect to decrease the dielectric loss$(tan{\delta})$, and the dielectric breakdown voltage of aluminous porcelain insulators was largely affected by its relative density. As a micro cracks analysis, HRS were measured, then the intensity of HRS increased with the amount of alumina composition. On the other hand, the propagation behaviors of cracks was fairly influenced by the distribution of pores.

  • The insulating characteristics and temperature rise behaviors of porcelain suspension insulators were investigated. The testing insulators had used in the distribution systems normally and were sampled. Firstly, leakage current was measured and its impedance was calculated. The leakage current of good insulators is 0.2 mA and its impedance is 66 $M{\Omega}$. The worse insulators have lower impedance and the insulators having below 15 $M{\Omega}$ take place flashover at the high frequency voltage flashover test. Secondly, the temperature rise characteristics were analyzed depending on leakage current and its impedance. Surface temperature of insulators was measured for 30 minutes and until its saturation after voltage was applied. The temperature rise of insulators having 15 $M{\Omega}$ is about $14.5^{\circ}C$ above the ambient temperature. Lastly, the heating behaviors of 3 insulators in a string was analyzed. Any insulator in the string does not generate heat so far as it has at least one sound insulator. On the other hand, all the insulators in the string are bad if the string have any heating insulator.

  • Due to a typhoon named MAEMI on Sep12, 2004, 7 transmission towers collapsed and 3 were damaged in the Gyeongnam and Busan areas. These caused long-term black-outs in Goeje-do. When a transmission tower collapses or is damaged, Construction will take more than 2 months and this will be accompanied by long-term black-outs. Therefore a temporary iron pole is used in such emergencies. Current temporary rehabilitation angle steel iron Pole consistes of around 800 members, 2,800 bolts and it takes about 5 days to construct a temporary transmission line. Consiquently wide black-outs occur during the construction of the temporary transmission line. To reduce black-out time, the construction period must be reduced as much as possible. This paper presents new methods to reduce temporary transmission line construction time to within 48 hours by applying a self-reliance assembling method instead of the current man power assembling method and by modulizing each angle steel with duralumin.

  • To analyze the reason of aging deterioration in transmission line insulators, we performed a various kind of test and investigated mechanical and electrical characteristics of insulators. Test samples consisted of K-1989(36,000lbs), K-1995(36,000lbs) and K-2001(36,000lbs) type insulators which have been used in domestic 154 kV transmission lines. As a result of this test, the facts turned out K-2001 insulator which contain 17 wt.% alumina has better physical characteristics than K-1989 insulator which contain 8 wt% alumina. Relativity density and fracture toughness of K-1989 porcelain are 94.2 % and 1.4 MPa\ulcornerm$^{1}$2// but relativity density and fracture toughness of K-2001 porcelain are 96 % and 1.7 MPa\ulcornerm$^{1}$2//. K-2001 insulators show a good performance not only in a physical property test but also in power arc test and steep front of wave flashover test which is performed to evaluate electrical characteristics.

  • Recently polymer insulators are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymer insulators have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators. With the gradual improvement of their design and material, their reliability has also increased. It is however difficult to establish how they will perform after several years of service. Aging of the insulator weathershed may lead to damages such as excessive chalking and crazing, erosion and tracking which affect the insulator performance. In service insulator are subjected to aging stresses such as humidity, pollution and electrical field which act singly or in combination. There have been numerous accelerated laboratory tests developed with the intention of evaluating suitability of polymeric materials. Some of these are strictly material tests, where as, others evaluate full scale devices. Service experience plays a key role in the utility selection of polymer insulator, but is time consuming, and may not always be available. Hence there is a need for a meaningful and reliable accelerated aging test for polymer insulator. This paper describes multi-stress aging test for reliability of polymer insulator This paper presents the rule of multi-stress aging test and test chamber for polymer insulator in korea electrotechnology research institute.

  • The paper provides the results of microstructure analysis and dielectricproperties of porcelain suspension insulators. The evaluation of characteristics was also made as a function of the manufacturers and fabricated years for the experimental specimens which had been used in real distribution lines. Even though the series A contained higher alumina contents than the series B, the densification of series A was lower than that of series B, resulting from much porosity. The microstructure investigation confirmed that series A had much porosity than series B. The series A contained quartz $(SiO_2),\; mullite\; (Al_6Si_2O_{13}),\; corundum(Al_2O_3),\; and cristobalite\; (SiO_2)$ phases. However, the series B had no cristobalite phase which had very high thermal expansion coefficient. Also, the tan$\delta$of series A was more abruptly increased than that of series B as increasing temperature. The elevated temperature may make much expansion of cristobalite crystal than other crystals, resulting in crack and puncture inside cap during the summer days.

  • In order to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of home production porcelain insulators by change of the alumina addition amount, 360001bs ball socket type suspension insulators which were manufactured in 1989, 1995 and 2001 removed in transmission line and an experiment was performed. By the result, 8 wt.% alumina that influences the mechanical properties and arc resistance properties in case of insulators that were manufactured in 1989 was contained, and the relative density and the fracture toughness of insulators appeared by 94.2% and 1.4 ㎫$.$ $M^{\frac{1}{2}}$, respectively. However, 12 wt.% alumina was contained in case of insulators that were manufactured in 1995, and the relative density and the fracture toughness of insulators appeared preferably lower by 92% and 1.3㎫$.$ $M^{\frac{1}{2}}$, respectively. Amount of alumina was contained most by 17 wt.% in case of insulators that were manufactured in 2001. It was confirmed that the electrical and mechanical characteristics such as the relative density and the fracture toughness appeared excellently by 96% and 1.7㎫$.$ $m^{\frac{1}{2}}$, respectively.

The shape design of porcelain insulator is formalized but design standard for polymer insulator is no standardized up to now, much research is necessary in real condition. In this paper, the surface and tracking properties of polymer suspension insulator for power transmission is investigated with ICP-AES, SEM, EDX, tracking wheel test and flashover voltage test. The diagnosis of insulator sample in tracking test hass been analyzed by leakage current STRI Guide and thermal image.
