This special issue is planned to introduce the recent academic state of the Korean geography, as the 32nd International Geographical Congress (IGC) in Cologne, Germany, 2012 is approaching. Korean Geographical Society successfully hosted the 29th IGC 2000 in Seoul and had a chance to introduce trends and achievements of korean geographers at the time. This issue is to review the achievements of korean geography research for the past ten years, and to overview the academic prospect of the korean geography.

Social and population geography in Korea has been developed somewhat later than other special subjects of geography. But in recent years, it has attracted much interests of geographers, and accumulated a considerably large amount of research products. Seen in this context, it is resonable to expect that social and population geography will not only lead the development of geography in the future, but also contribute to the resolution of socio-spatial problems in Korea. From this point of view, we shall retrospect in this paper the progress of social and population geography in Korea since the 1950s, and look out its future prospect and further research tasks. In the first place, we discuss general concepts and major themes of social and population geography, and overview its development process, and than review in more details some important research products which would be categorized into five main subjects, that is, research methodology, urbanization and urban population phenomena, population movement and changing rural life, residential differentiation and urban redevelopment, and urban social life and regional social well-being. Finally, we consider briefly the future prospect and further tasks of social and population geography in Korea.

Since the mid-1980s there has been an intensive debate on a regional geography in abroad, and its renaissance has been widely expressed. Under the influences of these academic circumstances, many Korean scholars have tried to introduce this trend and at the same time to propose new development lines of the Korean geography with a critical perspective. However, the empirical study of Korean regional geography including area studies is characterized by a quantitative deficit on the one hand and by its peripheral position on the other. The main reasons of this marginalization of Korean regional geography that we can find include a undifferentiated import of new systematic/nomothetic geography in the 1960s and 1970s, a historical interruption with a tradition of old Korean geography, and the practical difficulties of regional geographical approach itself. Now we face with the fundamental changes including globalization/regionalization and an increasing actual demand for the information on different scales of space and place. In order to cope with these challenges, we inevitably need to revitalize various forms and modem characteristics of regional geographical approaches and try to reexamine the basic concepts, methods, and frameworks of regional geography.

The aim of this paper is to examine the development of regional geography (including regional studies) in Germany since 1945 in the context of its traditions and changes. From 1945 to the end of 1960s, in spite of many hies of renovation regional geography has faced critics and fall into a serious crisis. After the 1970s many geographers intensively have searched for the new conception and broadly accepting methodological way of regional geography, and in the advent of 1980s regional geography is regarded as a special form of collecting and presenting spatial informations in terms of the addressee. But in the after-era of german unification and through the new establishment of the Institut for the Regional Geography in Leipzig, a discussion on the research aim and future of regional geography was resumed, and its future direction is open.

본 고에서는 기후학연구의 동향을 대략 살펴보고자 한다. 우리나라 기후학연구의 시작은 해방과 한국동란의 긴 격동기를 거쳐 1960년대에 들어와서라고 할 수 있고, 본격적인 연구는 1970년대에 들어서면서라고 볼 수 있다. 연구분야에 있어서는 기후분류를 주로했던 초기단계에서 기후요소나 변동을 다루게 되었고 최근에는 기후지형, 수분수지, 기단기후, 체감기후등의 방향으로 관심이 높아졌다. 그러나 meso scale이나 micro scale의 연구가 개척되지 않고 macro scale의 기후연구에 머물러 있는 감이 있다. 60년대 후반에서 70년대 초반에 걸친 우리나라의 산업근대화나 인구의 증가, 급속한 도시화에 따라 중기후나 소기후 연구의 필요성이 높아졌고 특히 일약팽창하는 도시에 있어서의 기후환경의 연구는 현대생활에 불가피의 과제이다. 이 방면에 약간의 연구가 시작되기는 하였지만 아직도 많은 연구문제가 방치되어있다. 중.소기후의 연구에는 현재보다 훨씬 많은 관측망의 설치가 선행되어야 할 것이며 도시기후의 관측에는 관측계기나 관측에 따르는 재정적인 문제가 달려있다. 이와같은 분야의 연구는 연구 team의 문제도 있어 개인연구로서는 도저히 감당하기 어려운 분야이다. 따라서 연구기관이나 국가의 지원하에 도시기후의 공동연구가 추진되어야 할 것이다.
