  • As the public Japanese art, print can be said to have started from Ukiyo-e print of Edo period(江戶時代, 1603~1867). Ukiyo-e(浮世繪) print, which 3 persons jointly produce, henceforth has gradually declined since the meiji period(明治時代, 1868~1912) due to the development of new print technique and introduction of western art. Since then, during the daiso period(大正時代 1912~1926), creative print movement grew up. Creative print is, differently from Ukiyo-e print, to be produced by one person, from the original picture to print, focusing on creating the artist's own work by being the main agent of the work. During before and after 1900s, print was evaluated low in Japan, compared to western painting, sculpture, etc. Nevertheless, the facts that several Japanese print artists received awards from international exhibits since 1950s became a big topic internationally, which became an opportunity to hold Tokyo International Print Biennale in 1957 in Japan, the first international art festival. From then on, print was recognized as an art genre while new recognition on it was gradually accepted also in Japan. In 1970, a controversy on it arose, while the characteristic of print as a medium of modern art became strong, accordingly, a controversy on it arose. However, in 1980, it firmly established itself as an art genre by overcoming the crisis through various efforts in the dimension of print artists and university education. Since then, print artists who produce new works with completeness by applying traditional technique and modern expression mode emerged, and until now Japanese modern print art is highly recognized by the world through the continuous overseas activities, research on print art, and cultivation of young print artists. This research looked back on the historical process when Japanese modern print art was created, which represents Asia, and investigated the cause that it could have win an international fame.

  • The line of demarcation separating architecture from the art in recent years has blurred, due to the expantionist aspects between. This is a study of the direction which contemporary architecture and art are now taking. The results of the study are as follows: 1. The direction of contemporary architecture is revealed through the works of deconstructivist architects and Hans Hollein. Deconstructivist architects have incooperated abstract forms and concepts for their expression. Also Hans Hollein has brought a new aspect to architecture by combining the aura of spirituality and the use of collage. 2. The direction of contemporary art is revealed through the works of installation artists. Daniel Buren works on the interactivity between the object and the observer. Dan Graham deals with the social issues which caused by the interrelation between the eyes and the visual media. Jae-en Choi works on the actual architectural site and space capturing the spirit of what the space is for shile Jung-hwa Jung deals with the layers of perception within a particular space. Another realm coming into being is the cooperation between artists and architects. The cooperation of Holl and Acconci is expressed through their joint project Storefront Gallery. It is the development of Accocis concept of boundary and Holls methodology. Another example of this realm is revealed through the Fish Gallery of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Gehry was introduced to the nature of material by Serra and Serra learned of new ways of viewing the existence of space between materials from Gehry. These new relationships between contemporary architecture and art are reciprocal in nature are indicators of a dynamic and new changing cooperation now emerging.

  • Organic Modernism was inaugurated by Alvar Valto as an alternative plan to the formative limitation of Geometrical Modernism. It began to appear in the 1930s in the fields of Architecture, Furniture, Product Design and so on. It is known that began with organic formative language is closely related to surrealistic artists Andre Breton as well as other artists and sculptors in that era. Such Formative Language formalized a stream of Organic Modernism Furniture Design unique to the regional and cultural characteristics of Scandinavia. After crossing over to America, mass production of Furniture was born and new materials were linked by industrialization. The Characteristics of Organic Formation in Modern Art such as Three -Dimensional, Biological Morphological, Symbolical, Primitive, Fantastical, Non-Realistic, Incidental, Irregular, transmit to Furniture Design. They are as Characteristics especially with Three-Dimensional, Biological Morphological and Symbolical aspects. Histories of Art and design, there are some examples showing mutual Interchange between Functional and Artistic Character. This thesis also clarifies the Formative Relationship that the Furniture designers who pursued Functionality and Mass Production had obtained from Modern Artistic works and the Artists, through the process of comparing and researching the typical Artists and their works.

  • As society alters and building ages, many industrial facilities lost their function and abandoned in central city areas, and sometimes creating many problems. However, many European countries successfully transformed those urban decay to vivid cultural hub. The purpose of this study was to analyze a concept and methods of converting idle industrial facilities to successful cultural spaces. A case study of Tate Modern, Baltic Center for Contemporary Art, and Ruhr Museum was conducted using literature review, site visit, and interview methods. Findings indicated that converting historically significant idle industrial facilities to cultural center had not only reused abandoned site but also helped regenerating adjacent urban areas. This article demonstrates the key factors of successful conversion strategies as convenience, participation, placeness, historicity, and accessibly; and thus an effort to actively enhance the strategic factors were demanded in future conversion projects. A continuous studies on exploring extensive cases in various perspectives are required for further generalization in future studies.

  • Although having only become a unified nation in latter 19th century, Germany saw a movement centered on intellectuals to find culture via mental revolution after experiencing much confusion amidst rapid urbanization and materialism. Having expressed as they are such psychological states as anger, sorrow, repression, etc., which arise in reality, by remaining faithful to instinctive sensibility, the form naturally becomes distorted or exaggerated and continues on the tradition of romanticism of a powerful, dark, and introverted atmosphere. Having been discontinued after being branded as 'decadent art' by the Nazis of Fascism, expressionist art has returned in latter 20th century mainly centered on Germany, and this merits our attention. While neo expressionists actively use various objets and media, they metaphorically express hope about Germany's culture and society by again placing on the screen figures, myths, and symbols using rough brush touch, rich colors, etc., which past expressionists enjoyed using to represent the inner world of humans. As such, by examining expressionism, which can be seen as the origin of neo expressionism, we will discover the context in which these people conform to Germany's traditional romanticism and how they inherited and developed it.

  • Ready-made products produced in the industrialized consumer society after the 20th century have been adopted by artists as a new material called "Found object," and are reinterpreted in a broad sense in their works. The method of giving new meaning using this creates a new paradigm that is expanded conceptually as well as expression style. After Pablo Picasso's in 1912, when the Found object was used for the first time in contemporary art, we examine the development of objects through Dadaism, Surrealism, and Pop Art, and the expression of Found objects in the late 20th century. In this study, the artists and their work are analyzed by dividing it into three types: 'Unprocessed objects', 'Transformed objects', and 'Tenant objects', depending on how the Found object is mixed in works. Through this study, I pay attention to the fact that a work incorporating a Found object not only develops the object materially, but also allows the practice of free concept art to escape from the traditional norms of art.
