  • Architectural innovation is being regarded as one having major influence on the rate of performance improvement, even if this type of innovation does not show the highest level of technological discontinuity. Radical innovation firms who made a breakthrough product new to an industry, approach a certain point of time in which the speed of performance improvement very slows down, if architectural efficiency is not improved. At this time, this firm's prior experience in developing inferior, but very creative radical product architecture might work as paradoxical impediments to architectural innovation, the following important event. This study intends to understand the relationship between shifts in market needs and technological problem solving strategy, which exist before. after, and during architectural innovation, based on conceptual framework in which both stage and problem solving perspectives are combined. Korean SME, JAHWA Electronics could succeed in diffusion of vibration motor, by overcoming technological mental model locked in seemingly successful first generation architecture of coin type vibration motor. In-depth single case study including interviews and active participative observations was carried out for building longitudinal understanding of this innovation concept.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the moderating role of customer and supplier participation in the relationship between new product/service development processes and product/service innovation. The research result shows that the high customer participation plays the moderating role in the relationship between strategy design and product/service innovation. Thus, if customers give ideas in the strategy design process, the probability of new product/service innovation will be increased. The conclusions and implications are discussed.

  • It is almost impossible for firms to possess all of resources and capabilities needed to create technological innovations in modern competitive environment. This situation forces firms to conduct R&D collaboration. Therefore, this paper analyzes an effect of appropriability protecting knowledge exclusively on R&D collaboration and product innovation performance. In addition, we investigate how the governmental R&D support moderates and influences those relationships through empirical analysis. The results of moderated mediation show that the impact of appropriability on product innovation performance appears to be a common pattern in each conditional indirect effect of appropriability regardless of financial, direct, indirect R&D support of the government. The more governmental R&D supports increase over a certain level, the more conditional indirect effects of appropriability on product innovation performance increase through the vertical R&D collaboration. However, conditional indirect effects of appropriability through horizontal R&D collaboration are not significant in all levels of government R&D supports. If we utilize an analysis of moderated mediation by applying governmental R&D supports as a moderator, it is possible to analyze a significant strength of innovation policies and their performance. Therefore, this paper would make a contribution to an evolution of governmental R&D support and an effective formulation of innovation policy.

  • This study presents a new methodology for developing AI-based products. It identifies the distinctive attributes of AI innovation that are different from existing methods, and presents a product design process and methodology reflecting these attributes. This study emphasizes that AI product development should be oriented toward an ambidexterity approach. This study proposes a design process and specific development method for AI-based products that including steps such as technology push oriented idea generation with morphological approach, market pull oriented consumer requirements analysis, product design refinement, etc. In order to verify the practical applicability of this methodology, an AI-based car infotainment system development strategy is derived as a case study. 13 innovative ideas were generated by the morphological approach and expert review based on technological possibility, and a total of 6 quality requirements were derived as new product development strategies through the analysis of consumer requirements by combining Kano and TOPSIS. The methodology proposed in this research paper can be usefully utilized for companies to pioneer new markets through AI-based products or to expand the market by upgrading existing products or services.

  • This study investigates consumers' perceptions when customers participate in the process of innovating new products or new services essential to companies in the era of the 4th industrial revolution. Specifically, this study investigates how consumers' product evaluation varies depending on two types of innovation for a company's new product development (technology-based innovation and market-based innovation) and two customer roles (as information providers and as co-developers) participated in the development process. The research questions are as follows: As technology-based innovation and market-based innovation are different types of innovations, will consumers' product evaluation vary depending on these different types of innovation? If customers participate in the development process of a new product reflecting each innovation, how will the information that the customer participated be perceived by other consumers? In addition, this customer participation method can serve as an information provider and a co-developer, and will consumers' evaluation of new products vary depending on this role? As a result of verifying the hypothesis using an experimental method, it shows that consumers' product evaluation differs significantly depending on the role of customers who participated in the process of developing new product development process. In other words, the results indicate that the case where customers participated as market information providers in the process of developing new products is more favorable to the new product evaluation than the case where they participated as co-developers of the new products. In addition, there is an interaction effect between the type of product innovation and the role of customer participation. To be specific, when a product reflecting technological innovation is released, there is no difference in consumers' product evaluation according to the roles of two different customer participations. However, when a market-based innovation product is released, product evaluation is more favorably perceived when customers participated as information providers than they were involved in the new product development process as co-developers. This study is of theoretical significance in that it distinguishes each type of innovation and verified how other consumers' perceptions vary depending on their role when customers participate in the innovation process. Finally, limitations and future study directions are suggested along with practical implications.

  • Production innovation capabilities are critical to the survival and growth of firms. This paper investigates industrial dynamics and dynamic capabilities of firms by looking at how an industry evolution process influences firms' product innovation strategy and how dynamic capabilities affect firms' product innovation process. Korea Wireless Internet industry shows a full cycle of industry evolution process including introduction phase, growth phase, maturity phase, and decline phase using by dynamic technological and market changes. 7 listed companies in Korea Wireless Internet industry were selected. We have conducted multiple case studies based upon in depth interviews. Empirical results show that different phases of industry evolution influence firms' strategy of product innovation. Dynamic capabilities are also appears to be very important to the survival and growth of a firm.
