Changes in Quality of UV Sterilized Takju during Storage by Honeycomb Type-UV Sterilizer (허니컴방식 UV 살균기를 이용한 살균 탁주의 저장 중 품질변화)

  • A cylindrical ultraviolet (UV) sterilization system was developed for decreasing microorganisms in takju. The takju was passed through 110 strips of honeycomb-type teflon tubing with 9 UV lamps (1,395 W) set between the teflon tubes. Thus, during passage, the takju was effectively exposed to the UV rays without loss. In terms of the overall quality aspects of the takju, the optimum sterilization condition was set for 4 min at 2 L/min. A 2-3 log cycle decrease in viable cell numbers of total bacteria and fungi was observed at this operating condition. Quality changes in the UV-sterilized takju were examined via UV irradiation of samples followed by storage at 30oC for 8 days. To evaluate the quality changes, pH, amino nitrogen content, acidity, reducing sugar content, and viable cell numbers of total bacteria and fungi were measured. Increases in pH, acidity, and amino nitrogen content were observed in both the takju control and UV sterilized takju with increasing storage time. However, reducing sugar content was decreased in both samples. The L, a, and b values of the control takju and UV sterilized takju showed similar trends over the storage period. Viable cell numbers of fungi did not change in the control or UV sterilized takju during storage, showing approximately $10^8\;CFU/mL$ and $10^4-10^5\;CFU/mL$, respectively. In addition, viable cell numbers of total bacteria remained lower in the UV sterilized takju over 4 days compared to the non-sterilized takju.

A Study on the H2 Oxidation over Pt/TiO2, SO2 Poisoning and Regeneration (Pt/TiO2의 HS 산화반응 및 SO2 피독과 재생 방안 연구)

  • In this article, Pt/TiO2 was manufactured in the form of powder and honeycomb, and the influence of SO2, which is a poisonous substance to catalyst, and regeneration method were investigated. The catalytic activity of Pt/TiO2 before and after the exposure to SO2 was also compared. The initial activity of Pt/TiO2 was proportional to the injected H2 concentration (1~5%). And the optimum temperature of the catalyst and conversion rate of H2 were 183 ℃ and 95%, respectively. It was confirmed that when exposing 2,800 ppm of SO2 to the powder and honeycomb Pt/TiO2, the performance of catalyst was not measurable and also 0.69% sulfur (S) remained on the catalyst surface. As a result of the cleaning and heat treatment for the poisoning catalyst, the activity of the powder catalyst exhibited a conversion rate of H2 greater than 96%. Whereas, the honeycomb catalyst showed a conversion rate of H2 greater than 95% when it was regenerated through the heat treatment of H2 or air atmosphere.

  • In this study, the mass flow rate of the heat release rate equation, which is the major factor of the oxygen consumption method, was analyzed for the fundamental investigation of the cone-calorimeter (5 m length and 0.3 m diameter). The shapes of a completely empty inside, 3 mm pore diameter mesh and pore diameter 10 mm honeycomb with 0.76 porosity were constructed using the cone-calorimeter. To calculate the mass flow rate, four bi-directional probes and thermocouples were installed in a uniform position in the vertical direction of flow. The velocity gradient and flow perturbation were measured from the increase in Reynolds number. As the flow capacity increased, the speed gradient increased in all three shapes relative to the turbulence intensity. In addition, the deviation of extended uncertainty to the mass flow was completely low in the order of empty space, mesh (dp = 3 mm) and honeycomb (dp = 10 mm and 𝜖 = 0.76) at the 95% confidence level. The results can be used in designs to improve the flow stability of the cone calorimeter.

A optimization study on the preparation and coating conditions on honeycomb type of Pd/TiO2 catalysts to secure hydrogen utilization process safety (수소 활용공정 안전성 확보를 위한 Pd/TiO2 수소 상온산화 촉매의 제조 및 허니컴 구조의 코팅 조건 최적화 연구)

  • In this study, the performance of a honeycomb-type hydrogen oxidation catalyst to remove hydrogen in a hydrogen economy society to secure leaking hydrogen. The Pd/TiO2 catalyst was prepared based on a liquid phase reduction method that is not exposed to a heat source, and it was showed through H2-chemisorption analysis that it existed as very small active particles of 2~4 nm. In addition, it was found that the metal dispersion decreased and the active particle size increased as the reduction reaction temperature increased. It was meant that the active metal particle size and the hydrogen oxidation performance were in a proportional correlation, so that it was consistent with the hydrogen oxidation performance reduction result. The prepared catalyst was coated on a support in the form of a honeycomb so that it could be applied to the hydrogen industrial process. When 20 wt% or more of the AS-40 binder was coated, oxidation performance of 90% or more was observed under low-concentration hydrogen conditions. It was showed through SEM analysis that long-term catalytic activity can be expected by enhancing the adhesion strength of the catalyst and preventing catalyst desorption. It is a basic research that can secure safety in a hydrogen society such as gasification, organic resource, and it can be utilized as a system that can respond to unexpected safety accidents in the future.

  • In machine tool design, fast traversing cannot be achieved without reducing mass of the moving part. Honeycomb sandwich panel is extremely lightweight, and relatively rigid at the same time. We can reduce much weight when we selectively utilize honeycomb sandwich panels as stiffeners on machine tool structures. Feasibility of reducing weight is studied using a beam structure with both ends fixed.

  • The honeycomb adsorbents and adsorption process for carbon dioxide removal from fuel gas were investigated. Zeolite paper was made with Na-X zeolite powder and ceramic fiber as raw materials. $Li^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ or $K^+$ ion exchanges for Na-X zeolite and additional Na-X coating were performed on zeolite paper for increasing the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity, after that the adsorption characteristics of the samples were analyzed. Among the ion exchanged samples, $Li^+$ ion exchanged zeolite paper was most promising but its carbon dioxide adsorption capacity was less than expected for process application. However, additional Na-X coating was found to be an effective method for increasing the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity of the zeolite paper for process application. The carbon dioxide breakthrough test of the honeycomb adsorbent prepared with the zeolite paper was studied, and fuel gas treatment capacity was calculated when the honeycomb adsorbent was used in the rotary adsorption process.

  • In this study, it was performed damage assessment and repair of small scale aircraft adopted on composite. This aircraft adopted the sandwich structure to skin of wing. This study aims to investigate the residual strength of sandwich composites with nomex honeycomb core and carbon fiber face sheets after the open hole damage by the experimental investigation. The 4-point bending tests were used to find the bending strength, and the open hole was applied to introduce the simulated damage on the specimen. The bending strength test results after open hole were compared with the results of no damaged specimen test. In addition, The damaged composite structure was repaired using external patch repair method after removing damaged area. After that, this study presents comparison results of the experimental investigation between the damaged and the repaired specimen. It was found that the bending strength of repaired specimen was recovered up to 95% of undamaged specimen.

  • Composite honeycomb sandwich plate is light and strong. It is easy to produce. It began to be applied to the bodyshell of rolling stock. Generally, weight saving amounts to 27%. However, the material cost of it is much higher than that of aluminum extrusion profile, which prevents popular use of it for bodyshell. In this paper, manufacturing processes of two light materials were compared to investigate cost impact. After cost breakdown was defined, economics of two materials was analyzed using the previous cost data. Easy production of composite bodyshell could compensate for higher material cost. Mass production of composite bodyshell can make the equipment cost lower for the composite bodyshell so that it may have strong competitiveness to the aluminum bodyshell. Operational energy saving due to weight reduction was also presented referring to the actual statistical data in a metro line.
