Understanding Activism: The Cultural Meaning of the Candlelight Vigil (활동공중 이해를 위한 촛불집회의 문화적 의미 고찰)

  • The candlelight vigil is a nonviolent collective action by Koreans to communicate with the government. Although they have political goals, candlelight vigils are represented as cultural events. However, despite its importance in Korean society, it is unclear how Koreans perceive the cultural meaning of the candlelight vigil. This study, therefore, investigates the cultural meaning of the candlelight vigil, ultimately aiming to extending the framework for understanding active publics. To this end, this study conducted 47 in-depth interviews with participants of 2008 and 2016 candlelight vigils. The findings showed that the candlelight vigil has cultural meanings of festivity, humor, and self-expression. Theoretical implications of the findings and future research directions are discussed.

  • The aim of this study is to examine various life conditions of actors of Joseon periods in unofficial historical stories. Yadam Literature(Korean unofficial historical stories) had been collected Sadaebu(the past Korean nobility and Confucian intelligentsia) among the people that stories had been handed down orally. and they had been wrote them. So Yadam Literature was heterozygous between the folk culture and the ruling class. And it was mixed and adapted legends and folktales, adding literary imagination. had a decisive role to cultivating novel that owed much to prosaic inspiration during A. D. 18~19. Besides, set a high value on excellent novel itself. Yadam Literature had a verisimilitude because it described a contemporary reality as it was founded on freely prosaic inspiration. In those days, so called Suchok and Seunggwangdae had performed Uhee(a comic theatrical performance) in Joseon periods. Suchok was the lowest class of people and Seunggwangdae was performing Buddhist monk in that time. Uhee had performed three kinds of comedies. One satirized and insinuated kings. Other satirized corrupt officials, too. Another had mimic everything. It is famous at that time as a king knew repertoire. Confucian scholars very were fond of Uhee in those ages. Because they favored a criticism of Uhee's satire. They thought that it gave people good lesson or instruction. Heri Bergson said that comic and Humor included lesson. At that time, those thought were universal in the world whether east or west. At any rate, I classify six kinds of types Uhee in Yadam Literature. First, satirizing and accusing corrupt officials. Second, an actor who use a satire in order to appeal secure a government position of his lord to a king. Third, shamans and actors who use a satire in order to appeal sufferings themselves to a king. Forth, actors and performing Buddhist monks that skillfully mimic anything. Fifth, describing actor's extremely miserable life. Sixth, wit and humor of actors. The contents of Uhee were various. Korean traditional actors adeptly dealt with aspects comic of wit, satire, humor, etc. Sometimes they used changeable transition them. By doing that, a great number of people enjoyed fully the sense of freedom. Korean traditional actors were the lowest class of people. They had lived extremely miserable life. But they had been exist as actions, interactions, and relationship in society those days. they were not only open to people, but also might foster community to peoples.

The Effects of Adult Literacy Learners' Understanding and Satisfaction Through the Use of ARCS-Based Distance Literacy Education (ARCS 전략을 적용한 원격 문해교육이 성인문해학습자의 이해도 및 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was conducted to develop adult distance literacy education program and verify its effects. The program was developed through the examination on factors affecting online literacy education and necessary analysis and feedback. Pre- and post-tests analyzing the effects of distance literacy education measuring academic understanding factor, learner satisfaction and satisfactory levels on the academic were administered to 49 adult literacy learners before and after a distance literacy education course. Also, this paper try to explore learners who participated in distance literacy education experience, change and that meaning. The results of the content analysis on the program are summarized as follows. First, there were statistically significant differences regarding academic understanding factor, learner satisfaction and perceived learning outcome satisfaction variables since distance literacy education program which is based on ARCS model start. In addition, learners were satisfied with replaying the learning videos several times, and the improved ability to use smart devices. But they expressed regrets about not being able to go to school and the difficulty of using the devices. It means that distance literacy education based on the ARCS model draw a positive learning conclusion. On the basis of these results, suggestions for further research were discussed.

  • 현재 거대한 산업으로 형성되어온 만화의 이미지는 상업 광고나 정치선전, 공공홍보 등에 서 만화의 매체적 특성을 이용해 많은 효과를 얻고 있으며 복식에도 많이 응용되고 있다. 이러한 만화의 선두자인 조오지왕조 시대의 케리커쳐는 그 당시 많은 사람들에게 널리 보급되어 유행되었다. 케리커쳐의 어원은 Caricare라는 이탈리아어로 ‘싣는다’ 또는 ‘덧붙인다’라는 의미로 1646년 이탈리아의 화가인 마시니(Masini)가 그린 “일그러진 얼굴”을 캐리커처의 시작으로 보고 있다. (중략)

Humors in Female Costumes Depicted in Genre Paintings in the Late Joseon Dynasty (조선후기 풍속화에 표현된 여성복식의 해학미)

  • In this dissertation, the analysis of the study of female customs from late Joseon Dynasty and their genre painting to research humors and its aesthetic senses in that certain era. The purpose of the genre paintings is to look at general populations in an objective point of view and endeavor better value of public life style to embody clear understandings of humanity. The artists such as Hong-Do Kim and Youn-Bok Shin expressed their arts based on reasonable reality with sarcastic but humorous and creative ways to criticize the society's problems with clear statements. Therefore, the formative characters are realism, exaggeration and coloring of the whole arts that represents as innovative and original genre of it's time. Hong-Do Kim and Youn-Bok Shin expressed the women in society as open minded with versatile and refined looks in their paintings as the reality was repressed and closed mind for women figures in late Joseon Dynasty. The female customs in the paintings has both suppression and expression in their dresses and exaggerated shapes of accessories and the use of color were also found. All of these elements has the aesthetic values of satirized eroticism, the hint of next evolution of the late Joseon Era under the conservative disposition of social characters and freedom of expression of playfulness. These elements were new developments and a step forward of female 'sex' and expression of satirized eroticism. The exaggerated and distorted forms and accessories demonstrates unbalanced and asymmetrical elements in humorous characters and they include spontaneity. Also, using the five traditional color schemes of Korean art displays humor in playfulness of an art with splendid and purity, duality of positiveness and artless, smart and elegance looks.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine orientalism in Korean modem fashion by Korean fashion designers. Orientalism in fashion has been widely known to people by the efforts of many researchers, but that in Korean fashion wasn't. We thus study the aesthetic meaning of Korean orientalism, and extend it to oriental fashion as well as meaning of modem orientalism shown in Korean fashion. For this study, we categorized the orientalism in Korean fashion as follows: 1) mix orientalism; 2) natural beauty with non technical skill; 3) humorous beauty; 4) color beauty.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal that the deconstructive dis de phenomenon in contemporary fashion beauty design can be interpreted from the viewpoint of Korean aesthetics by having an open mind of coexistence. The typical characteristics of dis de phenomenon are decomposition, decentralization, and discontinuity, and these can be compared with beauty of non-artificialness, unity, and humor, which are characteristics of Korean aesthetics. In other words, the dis de-phenomenon rejects traditional composition and uniformized expression, and seeks various images by accepting the bi-national confrontation concept, this is similar to Korean aesthetics, which experienced atypical diversity by concentrating on the inner spirit rather than the outer form through indifference to technique, form, and honest human emotion.
