In recent years, the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella has become one of the most important pests for cruciferous plants in the world. A new type of the thiophosphoryl pyrazole insecticide, called KH502. Its outstanding insecticidal activity could be effective alternative against DBM. We investigated, using the comparative molecular field analysis (CoMPA) method, The structure-activity relationship of various thiophosphorylpyrazole derivatives and structure requirement for insecticidal activity. We found, the key substructures in pyrazole derivatives, the trifluoro-methyl group and the thiophosphoryl group. Both play an important role in insecticidal activity with the binding site. The three dimensional Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) analysis could provide useful information for the structural requirements of pyrazole insecticide as an insecticidal and the design of a new insecticide.
For the development of integrated pest management system by harmonizing biological and chemical control, some experiments were carried out to select low toxic pesticides against natural enemies. Leaf dipping method, body dipping method, and diet treatment method were used for the toxicity evaluation against Microplites mediator adults. We tested 49 different pesticides (34 insecticides, 11 fungicides, 4 herbicides) at recommending concentration commonly used to control insect pests, disease and up-land weeds in chinese cabbage field. 16 insecticides, 11 fungicides, and 4 herbicides were shown to be low toxic to Microplites mediator adults in the treatment of body dipping.

We studied the efficacy of the 'Natural Enemy in First (NEF)' technology in controlling thrips and aphids in tomato greenhouses, relative to the natural enemy and conventional chemical treatments. This technology combined the use of natural enemies of the pests (parasites/predators) with their food sources/habitats, and the treatment commenced at the time of planting. The 'NEF' technology, for the control of thrips, had an efficacy 32% higher than the natural enemy treatment, and 82% higher than the conventional chemical treatment. The average population density of aphids after the treatment was not significantly different among all treatments.

Banker plants are non-crop plants that can be used to maintain natural enemies of crop pests. Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) is an important natural predator used to control pest insects, such as thrips, in horticultural crops. The development of suitable banker plants is necessary to maintain O. laevigatus populations within agricultural areas and to effectively improve thrips control. The oviposition rate of O. laevigatus was compared when reared on various flowering plants, such as sedum, rose moss, and chrysanthemum; oviposition rate was highest on the yellow-flowered chrysanthemum variety than on any other plant. This study provides important information for the practical application of banker plants to improve the efficiency of O. laevigatus in agricultural areas.
Flacherie virus (FV) and Densonucleosis virus (DNV) of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, which give the most severest damage to the silk production in korea, were fed on the mulberry wild silkworm, Bombyx mori mandarina, the mulberry pyralid, Gryphodes phyloalis, and the American fall webworm, Hypantria cunea, to investigate cross infectivity by serological and histopathological at observation. By the Ouchterlony's double difusion test the mulberry wild silkworm was infected with both FV and DNV type 1 (DNV-1) and the mulberry pyralid with DNV-1, so those were confirmed the cross infection. But the American fall webworm was not recognized the cross infection by the same method. The infection and multiplication of the FV in the mulberry wild silkworm was observed in the cytoplasm of the goblet cell with the appearance of the virus-specific vesicle. In DNV-1 infection to the mulberry wild silkworm and the mulberry pyralid, the nuclei of columnar cell in the midgut of both insects was hypertrophied and the nuclei of midgut cell of the mulberry pyralid positively stained with the feulgen stain. Multiplication of DNV-1 in the midgut cell of the mulberry wild silkworm was replicated in two different patterens as linear arrays and large masses, while that of DNV-1 in the muberry pyralid was multiplied as virus masses in several portion of the nuclei of the midgut cell.
This study was carried out to provide pest control information for the cultivation of Eleutherococcus senticosus Max. As a result of investigation of the diseases and insect pests, three pathogens and three insect pests were identified from the field sample, respectively. The identified insects pests were aphids, stinkbugs and Bothrogonia japonica. Occurrenre peaks of aphids were occurred on June and August, and generally young leaves and flower buds were injured mainly. The identified diseases were black ring spot caused by Phoma sp., gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea and leaf blights caused by Rhizoctonia solani. The black ring spot was the most severe disease and was investigated from the beginning of June, and the incidence of the disease was 30% higher than that on September. As a result of growth test under different temperature conditions on PDA, these pathogens showed the best mycelial growth rate between 25 $^{\circ}$C and 30 $^{\circ}$C, and these results indicate that these diseases occur on hat summer season.
Mushroom sciarid fly Lycoriella ingenua (Dufour), syn. L. mali (Fitch) is one of the most common fly pests affecting the mushroom cultivation in Korea. This study was carried out to investigate the development at different temperatures and damages of L. ingenua in A. bisporus mushroom cultivation. Rearing of mushroom flies were carried out on mycelial culture in Petri dishes. The development of L. ingenua from egg to adult at the temperature of 16, 20, 24, $28^{\circ}C$ were 35.2, 25.8, 23.5, and 22.2 days, respectively. Adult flies invade mushroom farms and oviposit in freshly spawned compost. Damages are mainly caused by the larvae of 1-7 mm, which feed on growing mycelium and also developing stipes and caps of mushrooms. Adult flies spoil the appearance of the fruiting bodies, spread various fungal and bacterial disease, and transmit mites. The damages by mushroom flies increased without pest control causing yield loss of up to 27%.
Four experiments were carried out under farmer's field conditions to determine economic threshold levels of major rice pests aad attempt a reduction in the number of insecticide applications. In the experiments were included check treatments, insecticide schedules representing the official recommendations to farmers, and several corrective treatments. A careful record was kept of insect pest densities and disease incidence. i) In the north at Suweon and Icheon where Chilo suppresalis. (Walk.), the striped rice borer, was active in the first generation, no significant yield differences were obtained between plots receiving several insecticide applications and those left totally unprotected. The mean yields were high (5.2-7.6t/ha). ii) First generation borer activity rising to $8.6\%$ injured tillers was below the economic threshold since no yield reduction was recorded in either japonica varieties or the high-yielding Tongil variety. iii) Evidence was obtained thst berer damage was made good by replacement of infested tillers (compensatory growth), C. suppressalis populations were always low in the second generation. iv) The experimental results obtained at Suweon and Icheon do not justify the present official recommendations of 6-7 pesticide applications. v) further south at Iri a substantial yield reduction occurred due to an early outbreak of stripe disease transmitted by Laodelphax striatellus (Fallen), the small brown planthopper; a mean of 1-2 individuals/hill was recorded immediately after transplanting. C. suppressalis probably contributed to this yield reduction. vi) Several applications against the vector failed to prevent the rapid spread of stripe to the susceptible variety in the Iri experiment: in surrounding fields the resistant Tonsil varivety was ralatively unaffected. vii) Pests of lesser importance were Nephotettix cinctieps (Uhler), Nilaparvata lugens (Stil), Sogatella furcifera (Horv..), and leaf miners.
Pathogenicity of Korean entomopathogenic nematodes against local insect pests was different depending on strains or target-insect pests. Mortalities of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella larvae were 51.8%, 77.8%, 96.3% or 100% in Hanrim Steinernema sp. and 50.0%, 74.1%, 96.3% or 98.1% in Hamyang Heterorhabditis sp. on filter paper when larvae were exposed to 3, 6, 12, or 24 nematodes per larva. Mortalities of them on kale leaves at the same concentration were 44.4%, 63.0%, 76.1%, or 94.5% in Hanrim Steinernema sp. and 79.7%, 81.6%, 94.4%, or 100% in Hamyang Heterorhabditis sp., respectively. In field test, control value of Hanrim Steinernema sp. was 72.0% and that of Hamyang Heterorhabditis sp. was 84.1% in 14 days when 300,000 nematodes were sprayed to each plot ($13.27\m^2$). Although mortalities of rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis larvae showed no difference at high concentration, Hamyang Heterorhabditis sp. (47.3~100%) was more effective than Hanrim Steinernema sp. (34.3~83.3%) at low concentration, 50~200 nematodes/ml. When chestnut curculio, Curculio sikkimensis larvae were treated with Sancheong Steinernema sp. and Hamyang Heterorhabditis sp., respectively. When pellucid zygaenid, Pryeria sinica larvae were exposed to nematodes, Pocheon Steinernema sp. was effective ranging from 96.7% to 100% but mortalities of them were 63.3~76.7% in Dongrae Steinernema sp..
KNI3126 which is the eco-friendly material made by plant extracts - neem and matrine - have been evaluated for efficacies against 6 main pests and toxicity on natural enemies. Insecticidal efficacies of KNI3126 against plant hopper were above 95% at 5 days after treatment (DAT), whereas pesticidal effects against the cotton aphid were above 95% at 3 DAT and slightly decreased at 5 DAT. Insecticidal efficacy against the palm thrips resulted in lower control value as 68.1% than that of chemical insecticides. KNI3126 showed more than 95% control value against diamond back moth, suggesting that it could suppress the population of pest hard to control as eco-friendly material. Mortalities against two-spotted spider mite were about 80% at 1 DAT and over 90% at 5 DAT, respectively. For evaluation of the toxicity on natural enemies, effect against predatory natural enemy was classified as moderate selective toxicity based on the criterion of International Organization of Bio-Control (IOBC), whereas against parasitic natural enemies was found to be relatively safe. Repellent effect was weak against plant hopper, but strong against two-spotted spider mite. In the toxicity test for safety, KNI3126 was classified as the lowest level at acute oral, acute dermal and fish toxicity test and did not induce the irritancy at skin irritation test and eye irritation test.
