  • The application of a two-dimensional $M_2$ nonlinear tidal model to southern part of Kyonggi Bay is described. It has provided a preliminary assessment of tidal currents, bottom stress, energy dissipation in the Bay. Further numerical experiments have been performed with the model to determine the effect of deepening the approach channel to Asan Bay on the $M_2$ tide and on the response of Bay system to a stationary northwesterly wind stress field of $10dyne/cm^2$ suddenly imposed on thesea surface. Some of preliminary results are presented and discussed.

  • We constructed the tidal chart of $M_2$ tide in the East Sea (Japan Sea) by an objective method. The sea level elevations at coastal stations are specified as Dirichlet boundary conditions, and the tidal constants inside of the East Sea basin are determined by the solution of the complex partial differential equation for the sea surface elevation. We studied the influences of the bottom topography and the tidal friction on the distribution of tidal chart inside of the basin. Using the results of basin-wide tidal model, we constructed a detailed tidal chart of the Ma tide off east of Korea.

  • Currents driven by irregular waves are modelled using numerical model with various empirical relations improved. Kitaigorodskii's equilibrium equation is refined to account for shoaling effect and used for checking the breaking condition. In order to compute the bottom friction realistically. equivalent roughness blights are estimated considering the ripple shape and bed load transport which may be significant the surf zone. Two sets of equations are employed to evaluate the ripple shape: one is suggested by Nielsen and the other by Madsen and Rogengaus. Both equations give similar shape of ripples. but Madsen et al. give lower value of ripple factor than Swart suggesting that the equivalent roughness becomes relatively small. Optimization technique is used to determine the proper values for the empirical parameters of $\kappa$-ι equations, and the longshore current velocity is computed using the values of empirical parameters determined by the optimization technique.

  • The tides in the Saemanguem Area, the western coast of Korea have been examined based on simulations with barotropic depth-integrated model. As a first step tidal computations were performed with open-boundary sea level forcing from four major constitutents ($M_2$, $S_2$, $K_1$, and $O_1$). Subsequently the established model was utilized to investigate the effect of construction of tidal barriers for Saemanguem development plan on the existing tidal regime. It has been shown that tide of semi-diurnal constituents may be reduced to 2-7 cm in amplitude along the frontal area of proposed barrier. In connection with above changes the tidal current regime may be subjected to significant reduction in intensity. thus suggesting the high possibility of sedimentation along the frontal region of tidal barrier.

  • Introduction of wave model, considered the effect of shoaling, refraction, diffraction, partial reflection, bottom friction, breaking at the coastal waters of complex bathymetry, is a very important factor for most coastal engineering design and disaster prevention problems. As waves move from deeper waters to shallow coastal waters, the fundamental wave parameters will change and the wave energy is redistributed along wave crests due to the depth variation, the presence of islands, coastal protection structures, irregularities of the enclosing shore boundaries, and other geological features. Moreover, waves undergo severe change inside the surf zone where wave breaking occurs and in the regions where reflected waves from coastline and structural boundaries interact with the incident waves. Therefore, the application of mild-slope equation model in this field would help for understanding of wave transformation mechanism where many other models could not deal with up to now. The purpose of this study is to form a extended mild-slope equation wave model and make comparison and analysis on variation of harbor responses in the vicinities of Pohang Old Harbor and Pohang New Port, etc. due to construction of New Port in Youngil Bay. This type of trial might be a milestone for port development in macroscale, where the induced impact analysis in the existing port due to the developemnt could be easily neglected.

  • A numerical study of a two-layer, stratified flow is investigated, using the implicit finite difference method in one dimension. The results of computational method have been tested and, in case of lock exchange flow, compared with the results of experimental data. The results of model experiments with various interfacial, bottom friction coefficients along with various time weighting factor of numerical scheme and dissipative interface are shown and discussed. Two-layer model experiment has been also carried out to investigate the generation and propagation characteristics of internal tidal wave over the steep bottom topography under stratified condition. The internal wave seems to well radiate through the downstream boundary under the experiments adopting radiation conditions both at two layers and only at upper layer, confirming the applicability of radiational boundary condition in stratified flows. It is also shown that the internal wave through the downstream boundary propagates more actively with increasing thickness of lower layer in the downstream. This implies that the potential tidal energy in the interface will depend upon the thickness of lower layer for the constant thickness of upper layer.

  • Temporal and spatial variations of temperature and salinity around Ganjeol Point during January, April, August and November 2011 were studied using the data from CTD observations and temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 20 stations in the southeast coast of Korea. Temperature and salinity were nearly homogeneous through the whole depth by mixing of the seawater in spring and winter related to the sea surface cooling. Stratification induced by the river runoff and the bottom cold water was clear in summer. In autumn, sea water had vertical mixing initiated from surface layer and weak stratification at the middle and bottom layers. Low temperature and high salinity emerged throughout the year near Ganjeol Point, which inferred from turbulent mixing and upwelling by its topographical effect. Major periods of 1/4~1.4 day temperature fluctuations were recorded for the most part of the stations. According to the cross spectral density analysis, high coherence and small time lag for temperature fluctuation between layers were shown at Ganjeol Point. However, those features at the northen area of Hoeya river were opposed to Ganjeol Point. From analyses, thermohaline structure and its fluctuation around Ganjeol Point were characterized into those three parts, the south of Ganjeol Point, Ganjeol Point and the north of Ganjeol Point.

  • In order to develop a high performance ocean model, we used Julia, a Just-In-Time compile language, and to obtain the solution of the momentum equation, we made the code to solve the Poisson equation by the Successive Over-Relaxation method. And then we made two models to test Julia calculation codes. First, a simple channel form is modeled to test constant source/sink conditions. Second, the simplified Yellow Sea was modeled to test tidal forcing, Coriolis forces, and the effect of vertical eddy diffusivity coefficients. The model has been tested with a total of eight cases in the two scenarios. As a result of the test, the depth-averaged current speed of the three cases in Scenario 1 converged perfectly to the theoretical value, and that showed well a vertical flow velocity gradient due to the bottom friction. Also, the result of Scenario 2 represented well the amphidromic points of Yellow Sea and the tidal characteristics of mid-western and southwestern coast of Korea. Therefore, it is considered that the ocean model using Julia language has developed successfully, this suggests that the ocean model has come to the stage of successful transition from a classical compile language to a Just-In-Time compile language.
