Reassessment of the Mild Slope Equations (완경사 파랑식들의 재평가)

  • In the derivation of mild slope equation, a Galerkin method is used to rigorously form the Sturm-Liouville problem of depth dependent functions. By use of the canonical transformation to the dependent variable of the equation a reduced Helmholtz equation is obtained which exclusively consists of terms proportional to wave number, bottom slope and bottom curvature. Through numerical studies the behavior of terms is shown to play an important role in wave transformations over variable depth and it is proved that their relative magnitudes limit applicability of the mild slope equation(MSE) against the modified mild slope equation(MMSE).

  • 잠제는 수질 보전과 경관 측면에서 뛰어난 장점을 가지고 있다. 잠제의 수리학적 특성은 여러 각도로부터 수많은 이론적 혹은 실험적인 연구가 이루어져 왔으며, 이러한 해안구조물에 의한 파랑의 저감효과를 예측하는 것이 중요시 되고 있다. 실제 해역에 있어서 해안구조물에 대하여 다양한 각도의 입사파가 존재하며, 또한, 실제의 해저지반은 불투과 층으로 이루어진 것이 아니라 다양한 매질로 이루어져 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 파압함수를 사용하여 투과 해저면 위에 설치된 잠제에 파랑이 경사로 입사할 때, 파랑의 진폭변화에 대하여 수치해석을 실시하였다.

Model Experiments for Acoustic Propagation Characteristics in the Across Slope Direction of the Sloping Sea Bed (경사해저의 해안선 방향 음파 전달 특성에 관한 모형 실험)

  • Sound propagation in a sloping sea bed ocean environment demonstrates ray curvature in a direction parallel to the shoreline. The theoretical analysis of this shows that an ensonified region and a shadow region are formed, and their spatial extents depend on the spatial coordinates of source and receiver, a sloping angle and sourece frequency. The purpose of this experimental study using a sloping sea bed model is to check the theoretical prediction as a part of an ongoing investigation in the ocean environment. The sloping sea bed model used in this experiment had an ideal pressure-release boundaries and a sloping angle of $220.5{\circ}$ A single frequency signal and an impulsive signal were used as omnidirectional point sources. The spatial acoustic field characteristics in the across slope direction were measured using the former and the frequency dependent field characteristics in a specific point were obtained using the latter. It has been found that the analysis for the spatial extent of shadow zone and the frequency dependent field characteristics in the across slope direction, has a good agreement with the theoretical solution.

Topographic Analysis Using Wavelet-Based Digital Filters in the KR5 area, NE Equatorial Pacific (웨이브렛 디지털 필터를 이용한 북동태평양 KR5 지역의 지형 분석방법)

  • Digital filters designed using wavelet theory are applied to bathymetry data acquired from KR5 area of Korea Deepsea Mining Area. The filters used in this study are the linear B-spline wavelet filter and derivative of a Cubic B-spline filter. With proper tuning of the digital filters, we can identify the location and orientation of the abyssal hill and abyssal trough in bathymetry. These features obtained from the digital filters are well correlated with bathymetric image. This quantitative information, which can be used to understand the underlying geophysical processes, can be further processed to obtain the spacing, orientation and distribution of the abyssal hill. This wavelet analysis of bathymetry provides good data to select the mining site.

Local Scour at a Submarine Pipelines on Slope Beach (경사해빈에 설치된 해저관로의 국부세굴)

  • In order to ensure that submarine pipelines are stable and functional during their project lives, attention must be paid to possibility of their local scouring. When a pipeline is placed on an erodible bed, scour will develop and cause the spanning of the pipeline. U they were destroyed partially or fully, it might cause enormous restoration expenses and contamination of sea water. This paper aims at examining the characteristics of the scour End the prediction of the local scour depths around the submarine pipelines. The pipelines on the model beach with the uniform slope are placed, and the local scour depths around the pipelines are obtained according to the various wave steepnesses. Using the experimental results, some parameters needed for analyses are calculated. Finally, empirical equations of the scour depth around the pipelines are suggested through the correlation analyses between the rotative scour depth. the KC number and Modified Ursell number.

  • Berkhoff(1972)는 해저 경사가 완만한 지형에서의 파랑 변형을 계산하는 완경사 방정식을 제안하였다. 이 방정식은 수식이 매우 간단하면서도 비교적 정확하게 파랑을 예측할 수 있어 현재까지도 해안공학 전반에 걸쳐 많이 적용되고 있다. 그러나 Berkhoff(1972)의 완경사 방정식은 계산이 비교적 번거로워 현재는 계산하기 편리한 포물형 완경사 방정식(Radder,1979) 또는 쌍곡선형 완경사 방정식(Copeland,1985) 등의 근사 모델을 사용하고 있다. 하지만, 이러한 근사모델은 지배방정식을 유도할 때 생기는 가정들에 의해 실제현장 적용성과 해의 정확성에는 언제나 일정한 한계가 있다. Characterizing Geomorphological Properties of Western Pacific Seamounts for Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crust Resource Assessment (서태평양 해저산의 망간각 자원평가를 위한 해저지형 특성 분석)

  • We characterize the spatial distribution of Cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts covering the summit and slopes of a seamount in the western Pacific, using acoustic backscatter from multibeam echo sounders (MBES) and seafloor video observation. Based on multibeam bathymetric data, we identify that ~70% of the summit area of this flattopped seamount has slope gradients less than $5^{\circ}$. The histogram of the backscatter intensity data shows a bi-modal distribution, indicating significant variations in seabed hardness. On the one hand, visual inspection of the seafloor using deep-sea camera data exhibits that the steep slope areas with high backscatter are mainly covered by manganese crusts. On the other hand, the visual analyses for the summit reveal that the summit areas with relatively low backscatter are covered by sediments. The other summit areas, however, exhibit high acoustic reflectivity due to coexistence of manganese crusts and sediments. Comparison between seafloor video images and acoustic backscatter intensity suggests that the central summit has relatively flat topography and low backscatter intensity resulting from unconsolidated sediments. In addition, the rim of the summit and the slopes are of high acoustic reflectivity because of manganese crusts and/or bedrock outcrops with little sediments. Therefore, we find a strong correlation between the acoustic backscatter data acquired from sea-surface multibeam survey and the spatial distribution of sediments and manganese crusts. We propose that analyzing acoustic backscatter can be one of practical methods to select optimal minable areas of the ferromanganese crusts from seamounts for future mining.

Characterizing Magnetic Properties of TA (Tofua Arc) 22 Seamount (23° 34′ S) in the Lau Basin, Southwestern Pacific (남서태평양 라우분지 TA 22 해저산(23° 34′ S)에서의 지자기 특성 연구)

  • We acquired the magnetic and bathymetry data around the TA (Tofua Arc) 22 seamount in the Lau Basin for finding submarine hydrothermal deposits. From the data, we estimated the magnetic characteristics in the study area. The bathymetry shows that TA 22 seamount consists of the western and eastern summits. Each summit exhibits a caldera. The western caldera is smaller, but deeper than the eastern caldera. The slope gradients of the TA 22 are steeper around ~1000 m depth range and relatively gentle at the summit areas with the small difference of two calderas. The magnetic properties of TA 22 seamount present high anomalies at the summit and the vicinity of the caldera. Low magnetization zones appear over the outer flanks and center of the calderas. These magnetic patterns are similar to the previous studies which had represented high anomalies and low magnetization zones inside of the summit area or on the flank of the outside of the summit area. The results of the 2D magnetic forward modeling with seismic profiles show about 20 nT of RMSEs (root mean square error) between the modeled and observed values. The low RMSEs proposes a good correlation between the modeled 2D structure and the geophysical observation in this study area. Based on the modeling and magnetization distribution, hydrothermal deposits are predicted to be located at the inner area of the calderas or at small mounds around caldera rims.
